What does this hire really come down to?

This seat owns the relationship after signature. The account manager protects renewals and finds expansions. The customer success manager emphasizes adoption, service quality and early warning. Many colocation firms blend both. What matters is the real scope: who handles an outage conversation, who signs a credit, and who owns the quarterly review with the customer's facilities lead.

Authority is narrower than customers assume. This person usually cannot change contract pricing, grant additional power, or promise delivery dates alone. They carry requests inward to operations, deal desk and capacity planning, and carry answers back. The skill is knowing who to ask and how to phrase it so the answer arrives quickly.

Customer type changes the job. A small enterprise tenant wants a friendly contact and help with remote hands. A large wholesale tenant wants a person who understands ramp schedules, capacity commitments and contractual remedies. Hiring someone good with one often leaves the other untended.

What do we check before you see anyone?

Ask about a customer who was close to leaving. What was the cause and what did they do before the renewal conversation started? Ask how they handled an incident affecting a tenant. Look for who they called, what they told the customer and when.

  • Ask how they handled an incident affecting a tenant. Look for who they called, what they told the customer and when.
  • Ask what they know about the facility itself: power path, access rules, remote hands scope. A person who cannot describe them will relay messages without understanding them.
  • Ask how they decide when to bring in a senior executive. Over or under escalation both show weak judgment.

How a search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

We use executive-search discipline for technical, frontline and leadership assignments. That means understanding the work, researching the right market and holding meaningful conversations before recommending an introduction. The questions change with the assignment. A shortlist is an outcome of that judgment, not the whole service.

Infrastructure is interconnected. So is the search.
  1. 01

    Search Calibration

We agree what the person must accomplish and what they will actually own. Construction, commissioning and live operations need different questions. We clarify systems, site type, scale, decision authority, reporting lines and the team around the hire.

  2. 02

    Market Mapping

We research comparable sites, projects and teams, then consider adjacent backgrounds where the experience could transfer. A matching title is a starting point, not evidence that someone has handled the same responsibility.

  3. 03

    Professional Contact Intelligence

Contact research helps us approach relevant people appropriately. It enables the search; it is not the product. Public records can be incomplete or out of date, so employment history and responsibility remain questions to discuss and confirm where appropriate.

  4. 04

    Persistent Personalized Outreach

We explain the actual work and why the opportunity may be relevant, then follow up thoughtfully and respectfully. We listen to whether a move makes sense for that person rather than treating a response as proof of interest or fit.

  5. 05

    Live Candidate Qualification

We ask about work personally owned, decisions made and what happened when a plan went wrong. We discuss motivation and practical terms: compensation, shifts, travel, per diem where relevant, availability and authority. We distinguish the candidate's account from anything independently confirmed.

  6. 06

    Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

You receive a reasoned brief: why the person may fit, supporting examples, uncertainties and useful interview questions. We agree which credentials, references or other checks are appropriate and who will complete them. We stay involved through feedback, offer discussions and the start, rather than stopping at an introduction.

Where do we find these candidates?

Colocation and interconnection providers where the person held a named tenant portfolio through at least one renewal. Managed hosting and cloud services firms, helpful for adoption and service review discipline. Facility operations or client services backgrounds, for the person who understands incidents but needs commercial practice.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

Do not hire a seller to manage accounts and then discover they neglect routine contact. Do not expect a service coordinator to negotiate renewals either. The account seat sits between those two jobs, and before anyone starts you should settle how credits, refunds and exceptions get approved, and by whom.

Questions we settle before outreach

  1. Settle account type and size

We define the tenant mix and who owns renewals so the profile reflects real accountability.

  2. Screen on incidents

Early calls focus on how candidates behaved when service failed, not on satisfaction scores.

  3. Present the portfolio history and the offer

You see what size and type of tenants each candidate held and what changed under them. Before offer we help you spell out who they depend on in operations and finance.

Incidents reveal the person

The surest interview test is an outage story. Ask what the customer was told in the first hour, who drafted the message, and how the tenant felt a month later. Strong candidates describe plain language, honest uncertainty and a named follow up, and they do not blame the operations team in front of the tenant.

Be wary of anyone whose stories contain only celebrations. Every portfolio contains a bad quarter.

Renewal discipline

Ask when they begin renewal conversations and who else is involved. In colocation, contracts are long and the customer's own planning cycle may start well before expiry. A manager who first raises renewal near the end is relying on goodwill.

Also ask how they find expansions. The best ones read power draw, cross connect orders and customer growth plans rather than waiting for an inquiry.

Handing requests inward

Much of the job is writing a clear request to operations: which cabinet, what load, what date, which contact on site. Ask for an example of a request they wrote and how quickly it was answered. Clear internal writing predicts customer satisfaction more reliably than charm.

Questions

How quickly can you share candidates?

The pool is smaller if you want wholesale tenant experience than for enterprise accounts. We share early candidates after scoping but never promise a date.

Will a tenant portfolio holder be pulled back by their current employer?

Candidates who hold tenant relationships are valuable to their employer. We ask each what would keep them and tell you if the answer sounds soft.

Is relocation required?

Some firms expect presence near the flagship site for tenant visits. Others work remotely with scheduled trips, so tell us which applies.

How should we treat travel for outage visits and quarterly tenant reviews?

Quarterly reviews and incident visits are the main drivers. Define the pattern and expense rules before offer.

How do I test cultural fit?

Role play a complaint call about a delayed install. Watch whether the candidate listens, names the next step and owns the follow-up.

How do search fees come into a customer success hire?

We explain them in the first conversation, before any tenant portfolio discussion. The agreement you receive covers the details.
