What does this hire really come down to?

A director of supply chain for data centers builds the framework agreements and capacity reservations that keep power and cooling equipment arriving when sites need it. They plan demand several years out for transformers, switchgear and generators, negotiate with manufacturers and decide how much risk the company will carry in commitments. It is a commercial job with a technical edge.

The first judgment is whether the person has reserved capacity or only bought on demand. Spot purchasing and long-term reservation are different disciplines. A director who has committed deposits against future demand has felt the cost of a bad forecast. One who has only bought against existing orders has not. Ask how they set a reservation and what happened when demand changed.

The second judgment is relationship style with manufacturers. Equipment makers favor customers who are predictable and fair. A director who squeezes every contract may win a price and lose a delivery slot. Ask how they handled a supplier who missed a commitment, and how the relationship stood afterward. Also decide whether you need someone with a technical grounding, since negotiating a switchgear contract without understanding what drives its cost is risky. One more test is how they respond when asked about a bad commitment. Every director has bought capacity that was later unused or missed a window. The ones worth hiring can tell the story without excuses.

What do we check before you see anyone?

Ask which agreements they negotiated, what volume commitments were involved and how they were structured. Specifics on terms show real ownership. Ask how they built a multi-year forecast and who supplied the inputs. Look for a clear process and an honest account of misses.

  • Framework agreements: ask which agreements they negotiated, what volume commitments were involved and how they were structured. Specifics on terms show real ownership.
  • Demand planning: ask how they built a multi-year forecast and who supplied the inputs. Look for a clear process and an honest account of misses.
  • Allocation constraints: ask how they secured equipment when supply was tight. The answer shows creativity and relationships.
  • Risk decisions: ask what exposure they accepted and who approved it. Directors who cannot name a risk they took have not carried one.
  • Cross-team work: ask how they worked with engineering, construction and finance. The role fails when it sits alone.
  • Supplier relationships: ask which manufacturers would take their call today and why. The answer shows whether relationships were built on fairness.

Where do we find these candidates?

Supply chain directors come from owners and operators with large capital programs, from equipment manufacturers' commercial teams, from industrial and energy sectors with long-lead equipment and from procurement groups at large contractors. Some were category managers who grew into leading a function.

  • Supply chain directors come from owners and operators with large capital programs, from equipment manufacturers' commercial teams, from industrial and energy sectors with long-lead equipment and from procurement groups at large contractors. Some were category managers who grew into leading a function. Others came from utilities, where transformer supply is a daily concern.
  • They move when the current company treats supply chain as a cost center, when they lack authority to commit capacity or when they want a program where demand is clear enough to plan around. Some leave because executives overrule their forecasts. Others want to build a team. A real mandate to reserve capacity and a leadership group that listens will attract the best people.
  • Expect questions about authority to sign. Candidates have been burned by titles that need three approvals for every agreement. Say clearly what they can commit alone, and where the limit sits.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

Do not hire a general procurement leader without long lead equipment experience. Give the director authority to commit money against forecasts, or reservations arrive too late. And test technical grounding, because a director who cannot talk to engineers will be outmaneuvered by suppliers on substitutions, test requirements and delivery terms.

Questions we settle before outreach

  1. work the function

We ask what equipment categories matter most, how demand is planned and what authority the director will hold. That sets the profile.

  2. Test commercial examples

We probe for agreements negotiated, forecasts built and risks taken, then check with people who sat across from them.

  3. Shape the senior offer

We help you frame compensation, authority and reporting, then prepare for counteroffer discussions.

Questions

What shows a supply chain director shortlist is ready?

Each person should show framework agreements they negotiated and capacity they reserved for long lead gear. We screen out those who only ran purchasing. You see what we could not confirm.

Why do supply chain directors accept or refuse counteroffers?

We talk about why the person wants to move and whether they might stay. If that changes, we let you know.

Is relocation to headquarters expected for a director?

Supplier meetings and executive access favor headquarters. Some directors live elsewhere and travel, which works if you state how many days a month they must be in the room. A director commuting by air each week tires of it within a year.

Who covers the factory visits a supply chain director has to make?

You decide airfare, lodging and how often the director visits plants. Supplier visits are part of the work, so candidates ask how many weeks they would be on the road. A vague answer loses people with family duties.

Should the director come from the equipment maker side or the owner side?

Maker side people understand factory scheduling and may be soft on owner priorities. Owner side people know demand and may lack factory contacts. Pick for your gap.

How does the fee apply if the director builds a team after joining?

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. Hiring the director first, then the team, keeps each search clear, and the director should help approve who joins their staff.
