Supply Chain & Procurement 12 titles
- Director of Supply Chain, Data CenterIf transformers, switchgear and generators decide your build dates, the person running supply chain has to secure capacity before the projects are even approved.
- Strategic Sourcing ManagerYou are hiring someone to decide where the program's money goes before purchase orders exist, and a title alone will not tell you whether they set strategy or only ran events.
- Category Manager, Electrical EquipmentIf you are paying for switchgear, transformers and generators without knowing what they should cost, you need a category manager who can test a quote down to its parts.
- Category Manager, Mechanical EquipmentThis seat owns the whole market view for chillers, air handlers, cooling distribution units and related equipment, so you need a person who can predict supplier behavior and not just compare quotes.
- Equipment Procurement Manager, Long-Lead / OFCIIf owner-furnished equipment keeps showing up late or in the wrong order, you need a procurement manager who tracks every item from purchase order to set in place.
- Expediting ManagerWhen a transformer or a switchgear lineup is stuck in a factory and nobody has seen it for weeks, you need an expediter who goes to the shop floor and reports what is really there.
- Supplier Quality EngineerA defect found at the factory costs little, while the same defect found on site costs a great deal, so you need a quality engineer who stands at the factory floor for you.
- Logistics / Materials ManagerYou need the person who gets equipment from the factory floor to the correct pad at the correct hour, and the gap between a planner and a doer is wide in this seat.
- Vendor ManagerYou are hiring someone to make existing suppliers perform after the contract is signed, which is a different skill from winning a good price.
- Demand / Capacity Planner (Supply)This seat turns a changing construction forecast into material and supplier commitments, so you need someone who can explain assumptions and defend them when the forecast moves.
- Buyer / Procurement SpecialistYou need someone who turns approved requisitions into correct purchase orders and keeps them moving, and the quality of that routine work shows up on site faster than most hires do.
- Warehouse / Laydown Yard ManagerThe person running your yard decides whether electricians find the right breaker the first time, and the difference between a tidy yard and a controlled one is easy to miss on paper.
Is the hire strategy, category, buying or expediting?
Directors of supply chain set strategy. Strategic sourcing and category managers choose suppliers for electrical or mechanical equipment. Equipment procurement managers for long-lead and owner-furnished items buy and track major gear. Expediting managers chase delivery. Buyers place orders. Each level has a distinct decision scope.
Long-lead equipment drives data center schedules. Switchgear, generators, transformers and chillers may take a long time to deliver, and an equipment procurement manager who has tracked those items knows where delays hide. Ask how they verified factory progress.
Category managers split by electrical and mechanical because the suppliers, specifications and risks differ. A person strong in one may be new to the other.
Where do quality, logistics and planning fit?
Supplier quality engineers verify factory quality before shipment. Logistics and materials managers move equipment to site. Warehouse and laydown yard managers store and protect it. Vendor managers maintain supplier relationships. Demand and capacity planners forecast what will be needed. Together they keep the right equipment arriving in usable condition.
Supplier quality engineers overlap with factory witness testing but focus on process and documentation. They can prevent defects from leaving the factory at all.
Laydown yard managers are an underrated hire on large campuses. Protecting equipment from weather and damage avoids rework and delay.
Should supply chain hires sit with the owner or with the contractor?
Owners buying equipment directly need people who manage long supplier relationships, framework agreements and owner-furnished delivery to many sites. Contractors need people who buy for one project at a time against a schedule. The title may match, but owner-side roles reward strategy while contractor roles reward speed and coordination with the field.
Owner-furnished equipment creates handoff risk. Someone must own the moment gear arrives on a contractor site, and the brief should say who that is.
Vendor managers on the owner side often become the main contact for several manufacturers. Relationship skill matters as much as commercial skill.
Demand and capacity planners link the construction pipeline to supplier commitments. When forecasts are wrong, orders arrive too early or too late, so the planner needs a seat in pipeline reviews.
Questions
Should I hire a strategic sourcing manager or a category manager?
Sourcing managers usually run supplier selection across categories. Category managers own one equipment class in depth.
Is an expediting manager a junior buyer?
No. Expediting is its own discipline focused on delivery risk and supplier follow-through.
What does a Supply Chain and Procurement search cost?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. The fee basis is written in the agreement before outreach starts.
How long does a Supply Chain and Procurement search take?
It depends on the title, level, location and your interview process. We agree a realistic plan at calibration and do not promise a date.
How do you handle counteroffers for Supply Chain and Procurement candidates?
We discuss motivation and likely counteroffers during live qualification and again before you make an offer.
What guarantee applies to Supply Chain and Procurement hires?
We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.
What do you not do in a Supply Chain and Procurement search?
We do not post your role on job boards, send unscreened resumes or approach candidates before the brief is agreed.
How long did your last search take? How much did the empty seat cost while you waited?
An open data center seat holds up commissioning dates, stretches the people covering it and adds cost every week it stays empty. Put your own numbers into the cost-of-vacancy calculator, then compare that figure with a contingency search where you pay only if you hire.
