- Logistics / Materials Manager
What does this hire really come down to?
A logistics or materials manager owns movement and custody: carrier selection, delivery windows, customs and permits, receiving inspection, storage, and release to the installing trade. That differs from the warehouse or laydown manager, who runs the yard day to day, and from the buyer, who owns the order.
This role sits between them and is judged by whether the right item reached the right crew without damage. Oversize and sensitive loads define the work. Generators, transformers, switchgear lineups and cooling units need route surveys, escorts, rigging plans and crane time. Ask the candidate which of those they planned themselves and which they inherited from a carrier. People who have only ordered standard freight will tell you about tracking systems rather than road restrictions.
Project phase changes the job. Early on it is mobilization and early deliveries to a crowded site. Near energization it is controlled handling of items that cannot be wet, shocked or left outdoors. A candidate who has managed only the first phase may underestimate how often late items arrive in the wrong sequence.
What do we check before you see anyone?
Ask them to describe a delivery that went wrong in transit or at the gate. The useful part is the damage claim, the schedule effect, and what they changed afterward. Find out who they directed. A manager of a receiving team, a rigging coordinator and a records clerk is a very different scope from someone working alone.

- Ask how they tracked items by tag against the installation sequence. Real answers mention reconciling deliveries with the construction schedule weekly.
How a search runs
How does The Six-Step Search work?
We use executive-search discipline for technical, frontline and leadership assignments. That means understanding the work, researching the right market and holding meaningful conversations before recommending an introduction. The questions change with the assignment. A shortlist is an outcome of that judgment, not the whole service.
- 01
Search Calibration
We agree what the person must accomplish and what they will actually own. Construction, commissioning and live operations need different questions. We clarify systems, site type, scale, decision authority, reporting lines and the team around the hire.
- 02
Market Mapping
We research comparable sites, projects and teams, then consider adjacent backgrounds where the experience could transfer. A matching title is a starting point, not evidence that someone has handled the same responsibility.
- 03
Professional Contact Intelligence
Contact research helps us approach relevant people appropriately. It enables the search; it is not the product. Public records can be incomplete or out of date, so employment history and responsibility remain questions to discuss and confirm where appropriate.
- 04
Persistent Personalized Outreach
We explain the actual work and why the opportunity may be relevant, then follow up thoughtfully and respectfully. We listen to whether a move makes sense for that person rather than treating a response as proof of interest or fit.
- 05
Live Candidate Qualification
We ask about work personally owned, decisions made and what happened when a plan went wrong. We discuss motivation and practical terms: compensation, shifts, travel, per diem where relevant, availability and authority. We distinguish the candidate's account from anything independently confirmed.
- 06
Candidate Intelligence and Process Support
You receive a reasoned brief: why the person may fit, supporting examples, uncertainties and useful interview questions. We agree which credentials, references or other checks are appropriate and who will complete them. We stay involved through feedback, offer discussions and the start, rather than stopping at an introduction.
Where do we find these candidates?
We look at logistics leads on large industrial and energy projects, mission critical contractors' materials teams, and heavy haul and rigging firms with project coordination roles. Military and utility logistics backgrounds also transfer when the candidate has handled high-value equipment under chain-of-custody rules.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?
Do not treat this as a warehouse job. The seat reaches beyond the fence to routes, permits and carriers. Do not ignore storage requirements. Climate-sensitive gear sitting outside can cost more than any freight savings. Do not hire someone who relies on suppliers to handle every detail.

Questions we settle before outreach
- Describe the load profile
Tell us the heaviest and most fragile items, how many deliveries are expected, and how crowded access is.
- Define the boundary with the yard
Clarify who runs receiving and laydown so we hire for the gap, not an overlap.
- Screen on one hard delivery
Each candidate explains one difficult movement in detail. We report back who planned it and who merely followed. If possible, include a site walk in the final interview and watch where the candidate looks first.
What changes at adjacent levels
A coordinator tracks shipments and updates schedules. A manager takes responsibility for carriers, permits and damage claims, and a director would set logistics policy across several sites. Decide which of those you are hiring before you read résumés, because candidates tend to describe the level above the one they held.
Where do we fill this role?
What does BLS publish for this role?
The figure below comes from the national OEWS row for Transportation, Storage, and Distribution Managers. Read the mapping badge before using it in a budget. A broader occupation can include jobs outside data centers. Compare your seat’s responsibilities and pay basis with the published occupation rather than treating the median as an offer quote.
Broader occupation. Transportation, Storage, and Distribution Managers is a broader occupation based on the work described, not a separate data center wage series. BLS does not distinguish this title, experience level, shift, credentials or data center employers. Confirm the actual duties before using this comparison.

Questions
When will we see candidates for this role?
It depends on how specialized your loads are and whether the seat is site-based. We will not name a number. We will report progress as we confirm candidates against your delivery profile.
Will a candidate's employer counteroffer?
Logistics managers on active projects are hard to replace mid-build, so counteroffers do happen. We ask early whether the candidate would stay if offered more, and tell you what we hear. Timing near a delivery peak can make this harder.
Do these managers relocate or commute?
Site-based seats often need a local or traveling person for the build duration. Corporate logistics seats are more flexible. State which you are filling so candidates can answer honestly.
What travel and per diem are typical?
Site-based roles may be per diem for the project term, while regional seats involve visits to ports, yards and factories. Write the arrangement into the offer. Candidates will compare it against what they have had before.
How can we tell whether they fit a live site versus a new build?
Ask about delivery into occupied buildings, where access windows and change control matter. Candidates from new-build only work often have not met those limits. Their answer shows how adaptable they are.
Who should we involve internally before discussing search cost for a materials manager?
Involve whoever approves headcount for the site team, since this seat often sits between project and supply budgets. Once that person has read the load profile, the cost conversation with us is simpler.
