You need pipefitters who can run large chilled water and condenser piping that stays tight through flushing and testing, and speed alone will not tell you who can.
This is what we do all day: recruit data center professionals.
No postings. No stacks of resumes. No chasing. You interview a short list.
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

What does this hire really come down to?
Chilled water piping is the circulatory system of a data center. The pipe is large, the joints are many, and a single leak after the hall is full of equipment becomes an emergency. A journeyman pipefitter builds the pipe to the drawings, supports it properly, and prepares it for pressure testing and flushing.
A leak in a finished hall can ruin equipment, so the best fitters treat every joint as if they will be the one to find it later. Grooved and welded systems call for different habits. Grooved work moves quickly and rewards a careful hand with gaskets and alignment. Welded work calls for fit-up skill and coordination with welders. Many fitters are strong at one and fair at the other. Match the mix to your job. Mixed crews work well when a lead fitter owns the quality of both methods.
Cleanliness is a quiet quality. A fitter who keeps pipe ends capped and the inside clean saves weeks of flushing. Ask how they handled it on past jobs and what they would change. Ask what they did when a pipe end was left uncapped overnight and the inside looked rusty.
What do we check before you see anyone?
Ask what diameters and materials they installed and whether the job was grooved, welded, or both. Ask how they set hangers and avoided strain on equipment connections. Ask who ran the hydro test, what pressure, and what failed. Ask how they protected pipe interiors and what the flush showed.
- Pipe size and type: ask what diameters and materials they installed and whether the job was grooved, welded, or both.
- Supports and alignment: ask how they set hangers and avoided strain on equipment connections.
- Pressure testing: ask who ran the hydro test, what pressure, and what failed.
- Flushing and cleaning: ask how they protected pipe interiors and what the flush showed.
- Drawing reading: ask how they coordinated routing with other trades and who decided when a conflict arose.
- Safety and tools: ask about rigging pipe overhead, working at height, and hot work rules.
- Valves and specialty parts: ask how they handled large butterfly or check valves and what alignment tolerances mattered.
- Insulation and sleeves: ask how they coordinated with insulators and set sleeves in walls and floors.
Where do we find these candidates?
Pipefitters come from union apprenticeships, from mechanical contractors with large commercial work, from industrial plants and refineries, and from shipyards. Some come from refrigeration contractors with strong brazing habits. Shipyard backgrounds are common and bring strong habits with large pipe.

- They move when a project ends and the next is far, when overtime dries up, or when they want to join a contractor with steadier mission critical work. Some prefer the cleaner conditions of a data center. Ask what they dislike about their current site and what they hope to find in yours. Some want to stay in one region with a campus build that lasts many months.
Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?
Do not hire on speed alone. A leak in a finished hall is far costlier than a slower install. Ask which test pressure their last system held and for how long. Do not ignore cleanliness habits until flushing fails. Do not mix crews without a lead who knows the testing plan.

Your search in 3 steps
- Describe the system
Tell us pipe sizes, joint type, and test pressures. That tells us who has worked on a similar system.
- Screen on testing history
We ask for a failed test and how the crew recovered. People who handled it name the cause.
- Plan the crew mix
We help you decide how many lead hands versus journeymen you need for the first phase. We also ask whether you plan a prefabrication shop on site.

What does BLS publish for this role?
The figure below comes from the national OEWS row for Plumbers, Pipefitters, and Steamfitters. Read the mapping badge before using it in a budget. A broader occupation can include jobs outside data centers. Compare your seat’s responsibilities and pay basis with the published occupation rather than treating the median as an offer quote.
Closest proxy. Plumbers, Pipefitters, and Steamfitters is the closest occupational proxy based on the work described, not a separate data center wage series. BLS does not distinguish this title, experience level, shift, credentials or data center employers. Confirm the actual duties before using this comparison.

Questions
How do you know a pipefitter on the shortlist has really run chilled water or process piping?
Each person has laid out, fit and pressure tested pipe and can name the test pressure and who witnessed it. Anyone who only assisted on the crew is labeled that way, so you do not mistake a helper for a lead.
A pipefitter we want has a counteroffer from a contractor with steady hall work. What should we ask?
Ask how many guaranteed hours the other contractor promised over the coming year. Pipefitters will often stay for a full year of work and leave a higher rate that ends in the spring.
Can a journeyman pipefitter from another local carry a card onto our campus?
That depends on your labor agreements and the state, so confirm before the offer. A fitter who arrives and cannot work yet will leave, and you will have paid for the move.
Which pipe sizes and joining methods should we list so a pipefitter can judge the job?
Name the largest line, the material and whether joints are welded, grooved or flanged. A fitter who has only worked small copper will see that list and decline, which saves both of us time.
Do we need a pipefitter or a welder for a scope that is mostly joints?
If most of the work is making welded joints, a qualified welder leads and fitters support. If it is layout, supports and fit-up, the pipefitter leads.
If we only need a pipefitter for one plant phase, how is that written into the search?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. The agreement says the seat covers one phase and whether you may keep the person once it ends, so candidates hear it before they say yes.
