What does this hire really come down to?

A channel or partner manager does not close the customer. They recruit partners, train their sellers, register deals, and settle disputes when two partners reach the same customer. Authority typically covers partner terms within a set range, while pricing exceptions and contract changes go back to leadership.

The difference from a direct account executive is that success arrives through other people's sellers. Partners differ more than titles suggest. Technology resellers want margin and fast quoting. Carriers and network providers want joint offers that combine connectivity with space. Systems integrators want a delivery partner they can trust inside their own projects. A manager who built programs for one type may not read the others.

Adjacent roles also matter. An alliance lead works on strategic joint ventures with a few large names, while a channel manager runs a wider program with rules, tiers and enablement. Decide whether you need breadth or a handful of deep relationships.

What do we check before you see anyone?

Ask how they decided which partners to stop investing in. Active pruning shows a manager who understands where effort pays. Ask how they handle deal registration conflicts. The answer should describe a rule applied consistently, not diplomacy alone. Ask what they gave partner sellers to make selling easy.

  • Ask how they handle deal registration conflicts. The answer should describe a rule applied consistently, not diplomacy alone.
  • Test their grasp of the product with a partner question your own team gets, such as how interconnection and space bundle for a customer.
  • Ask what they gave partner sellers to make selling easy. Training material, quoting tools and a named contact all count.

Where do we find these candidates?

Colocation, cloud and managed services providers with an established partner program, where the person owned the program rather than one partner. Network and carrier organizations, which suit programs built around connectivity. Hardware and software vendors with reseller channels, for someone who learned program discipline but needs to learn facilities.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

Do not hire a strong direct seller and expect channel instincts to appear. Do not give the manager responsibility for partner revenue with no say over partner terms. Do not ignore conflict with your direct sales team until partners complain.

Your search in 3 steps

  1. Define the partner mix

We establish which partner types matter and what current program exists so candidates are matched against real work.

  2. Test the program mindset

Conversations focus on rules, enablement and partner exits rather than relationships alone.

  3. Show the evidence and the offer

You receive what each candidate built, what they inherited and who they reported to. We help you agree the quota, partner authority and direct sales boundaries before offer.

Setting the program before the hire

Write down what a registered deal means, how long protection lasts, and who settles a dispute. If these rules do not exist, the new manager will spend their first quarter inventing them while partners wait. Candidates with program experience will ask for exactly this document, and the questions they raise are a useful screen.

Also decide how partner activity is credited to your own sellers. Unclear credit is the most common reason direct teams quietly undermine a channel.

Judging partner relationships honestly

Candidates often name partners they worked with, but the more useful question is what those partners did differently because of the manager. Look for specific actions: a retrained team, a joint offer, a renegotiated term, a partner dropped.

Treat a long list of friendly contacts with caution. A manager who can only describe warm introductions may not have changed any partner's behavior.

Enablement they should own

A partner seller sells what is easy to explain. Ask what the candidate produced so a reseller's rep could describe your space, power and connectivity in two minutes, and how they found out whether it was used.

Questions

How soon can you present candidates?

It depends on whether you need carrier, reseller or integrator experience, since each pool is separate. After scoping we share early candidates but no promised date.

Do partner managers get counteroffers because of the partners they hold?

Partner managers often hold relationships their employer fears losing, so counteroffers are likely. We raise this with candidates before they interview with you.

Is relocation necessary?

Many partner roles are remote with travel to partner events. If you need presence at headquarters for program work, we say so at the start.

Who pays for partner events and joint customer calls on the road?

Partner meetings, events and customer calls with partners create regular travel. Settle expense rules before offer so the candidate knows what the role costs them.

How do I check they fit my direct sales team?

Ask how they would split a deal that a partner and your seller both claim. A clear rule and a calm tone are more convincing than a promise to get along.

What does the fee conversation look like for a partner program hire?

We cover it on the first scoping call, alongside the partner mix you need. The agreement terms you receive handle the rest.

How a search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

Every search runs the same six steps. We agree the brief with you, map where the people work, find direct contact routes, reach out personally and repeatedly, then qualify each candidate live. You only see a short list of people who fit, with notes on each, and we stay with you through offer and start.

  1. 01

    Search Calibration

You get: A written brief you sign off on: scope, must-haves, pay band and who not to approach.

  2. 02

    Market Mapping

You get: A map of the companies and projects where your future hire is working today.

  3. 03

    Professional Contact Intelligence

You get: Verified direct contact routes to the people on that map, not job board replies.

  4. 04

    Persistent Personalized Outreach

You get: Repeated, role-specific outreach to people who are not looking, in your words.

  5. 05

    Live Candidate Qualification

You get: Each candidate is screened live against your brief before you hear their name.

  6. 06

    Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

You get: A short list with candidate briefs, then support through interviews, offer and start.

What should you know before you send a role?

How long until I see a short list?

It depends on the role, the location and the market. We agree a realistic timeline with you during Search Calibration and keep you updated as the search runs.

Is there a guarantee?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

What don't you do?

We do not post your job on boards, send stacks of unscreened resumes or charge an upfront fee. We do not approach candidates for your search before the brief is agreed with you.
