Hiring guide: Colocation Sales, Leasing & Solutions Engineering
Data Center Headhunters recruits critical facilities, data center operations, construction and delivery, commissioning, power and cooling, and executive talent for colocation, hyperscale and enterprise sites. We research the market, contact working people and qualify a shortlist for your opening. No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.
Colocation commercial titles look alike on a job board and differ in what the person may promise a customer. One seller closes a single cage on standard terms. Another negotiates a multi-building lease that depends on power the utility has not yet delivered.
This is what we do all day: recruit data center professionals.
No postings. No stacks of resumes. No chasing. You interview a short list.
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

What does this hire really come down to?
Start with who signs what. A sales executive brings the opportunity and shapes commercial terms. A leasing lead owns the paper, the pricing structure and the negotiation with a customer's real estate and legal teams. A solutions engineer owns the technical answer: whether a requested density, cooling method and redundancy can be delivered in a named suite on a named date. If your draft job description blends all three, candidates will read it three ways.
Ask who stands behind a promise after signature. Some sellers hand an order to delivery and step away, while others stay the contact through fit-out and first expansion. Hire someone who has lived the arrangement you run.
What do we check before you see anyone?
- Confirm who answers customer security questionnaires, since that work often lands on the solutions seat by default.
Where do we find these candidates?
Solutions engineers often come from facility operations or design engineering. Test whether they still read a single line diagram comfortably. Sellers and leasing professionals come from carrier and network sales, managed hosting, and commercial real estate teams handling large industrial space.
Ask what approvals sat between them and signature.
Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?
Do not hire the most polished presenter without checking whether they can survive a customer engineer's questions on a redundancy design. Do not treat a solutions engineer as a junior seller. The seat exists to stop the company selling what it cannot build, and a weak hire quietly erodes that protection.

- Splitting variable pay so the technical seat is rewarded for closing, then discovering feasibility advice has gone soft.
How the search runs
Name the seat and its owners
Write down which of the three seats is open, who it reports to, who owns pricing, who approves a non-standard design and who answers the customer after signature.
Brief us on your buyers and test two skills separately
Tell us whether customers are enterprise IT teams, cloud providers or network operators. We screen commercial judgment and technical depth separately.
Put engineering in the final room and settle pay early
Have a facility or design engineer meet finalists. Agree quota, territory and deals in flight before the offer.
Interview questions
Ask a seller: What did you decline to promise a customer, and why? A strong answer names a capacity, date or cooling approach held back pending engineering sign-off. A weak one blames the customer for unreasonable asks.
Ask a leasing candidate: How did you handle a customer who wanted room to grow into space not yet built? Listen for phasing, utility energisation dates and who carried the risk if power slipped. Vague talk of flexibility shows they have not owned that exposure.
Ask a solutions candidate: What happens to a customer's contracted capacity when only part of a hall is energised? Good answers separate critical load from what is available at the rack, and explain how redundancy language such as N+1 or 2N appears in the contract. Repeated brochure terms show surface knowledge.
Questions
How fast can a shortlist arrive for a leasing lead versus a solutions engineer?
Leasing leads who have negotiated phased power delivery are a smaller pool than general sellers, so that search usually carries more constraint. We will tell you early which requirement narrows the field. We make no promise of a number of days.
What if my seller counteroffers because customer contracts are in flight?
A departing seller often holds renewals and expansions, so the pressure to stay is real. We ask candidates early what would change their mind, so you can see the risk before offering. Settle account handover terms in the offer discussion.
Will a solutions engineer relocate to sit near our campus?
Engineers who need regular time walking halls and meeting delivery teams are more location sensitive than sellers covering a region. Tell us whether the seat needs weekly presence on site. A hybrid arrangement may widen the pool but changes who you can hire.
How much customer travel should I plan to cover?
Customer visits, suite tours and industry events drive travel, and the amount depends on territory and deal stage. State expected time away and the expense policy in the brief. Per diem is mainly a field construction practice and rarely applies here.
How do I judge fit between a seller and my delivery engineers?
Watch how the candidate treats a sceptical engineer in the final round. Someone who asks about constraints will work well after signature, and someone who dismisses them will create friction. Ask your engineers for their honest read afterward.
How should variable pay be treated in the search fee?
Tell us the expected base and variable structure at the outset so the fee basis is clear. Commercial seats often have uncertain first-year earnings, and ambiguity there causes disputes. We will confirm the approach in writing before any search begins.
