What does this hire really come down to?
A product manager here owns the offer: what is sold, how it is packaged, what it must do and when it retires. That includes space and power bundles, cross connects, cloud on-ramps, internet exchange access and remote hands tiers. Decision authority generally covers roadmap priority and specification.
Price sits with the deal desk and delivery with operations, so influence matters more than command. Compare adjacent roles. A product marketing manager tells the story. A solutions architect designs for one customer. The product manager sets the standard offer many customers buy. A candidate who has handled one-off designs may find that repeatable products demand different discipline.
Interconnection products differ from space products. Interconnection depends on carrier relationships, network density and ordering workflow. Space products depend on build schedules and power availability. Know which side you need to improve.
What do we check before you see anyone?
Ask them to describe a feature they declined. A real product manager has a reason and a customer who was unhappy about it. Ask how they decided on an offer's price band and who they consulted. The answer should include operations and finance.

- Ask how an interconnection order moves from request to live service. Gaps indicate someone who has never dealt with the fulfillment team.
- Ask what they retired and how customers were moved.
Where do we find these candidates?
We look at colocation and interconnection operators with a product organization, especially people who launched or revised a service. Cloud, network and exchange providers suit an interconnection focus. Solutions engineering or operations backgrounds that moved into product bring strong technical grounding in how services are actually delivered.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?
Do not hire a general software product manager who has never touched a physical delivery process. Do not treat the role as customer request intake. And do not give responsibility for the roadmap with no authority over engineering time, because a roadmap without resources is only a list of wishes.

Your search in 3 steps
- Clarify the product scope
We settle whether you need space, interconnection or both so the candidates have relevant depth.
- Test the trade-offs
Conversations centre on what candidates declined and how they decided.
- Show lineage and the offer
Each shortlist entry states what products they owned and how they launched. We help you define roadmap authority and partnerships ahead of any offer.
Evidence of ownership
Many people claim a product. Ask what they personally decided, what they gave up, and what happened afterward. Real owners can describe a decision that went badly and what they changed. Participants describe the launch and credit the team.
Also ask who disagreed with them. A product manager without a story of resistance may have worked on a very narrow remit.
Fulfillment realities
Interconnection products depend on ordering systems, carrier cooperation and field technicians. A candidate who understands where orders get stuck can design simpler products. Ask them how long they believe a typical order takes and which steps they would remove. The reasoning matters more than the answer.
For space products, ask how they account for power availability and build schedules in a specification.
Customer input without capture
Customers will ask for bespoke terms, special cabling or one-off connectivity. Ask how the candidate separated a request worth productizing from one that belonged in a custom quote. Listen for criteria such as repeatability, effort for operations, and how many other tenants would buy it.
Ask also whom they asked beyond sales. Field technicians and the network team often know why an offer is painful to deliver.
Finally, ask how they measured whether a product worked after launch. Usage, order volume and support tickets tell a clearer story than revenue alone, and a candidate who watched them shows real ownership.
Also check how they handle sunsetting an offer that a few loyal tenants still use.

Questions
How soon can I expect candidates?
Few people have owned both products and a roadmap, so the first conversations may be narrower than you want. We share progress without a fixed date.
Is a counteroffer likely when a product owner has a live roadmap?
Product leaders hold knowledge that is hard to replace, so yes. We ask early what would keep each candidate in their seat.
Will they need to relocate?
Some firms keep product close to engineering and sales, while others allow remote work. Decide your stance early.
What travel does an interconnection product owner usually take on?
Customer visits, partner meetings and industry events are the usual causes. Agree on expectations in advance.
How do I assess fit with engineering?
Ask them to describe a disagreement with an engineer about scope. Their account of how it ended shows how they work.
Can you explain how fees apply to a product manager search?
We discuss them in the first scoping conversation, once we know whether space or interconnection leads. The agreement we give you sets the terms.
