What does this hire really come down to?
An implementation or onboarding manager runs the customer's move in. Tasks include confirming the order, scheduling the delivery of cabinets and power, coordinating cross connects, arranging access for the tenant's installers, and walking the space with the customer before acceptance. Authority covers the plan and the schedule.
It rarely covers pricing, design changes or electrical work, which belong to others. This role differs from customer success, which follows after go live, and from construction project management, which delivers the building. The onboarding manager lives between the sale and the steady state. They need to understand facility rules well enough to keep tenant technicians safe and compliant.
Project differences are large. A single cabinet deployment is a quick coordination exercise. A multi-megawatt wholesale handover involves commissioning data, load ramp, and contractual milestones. Match the candidate's background to the size of what they will handle.
What do we check before you see anyone?
Ask them to describe a delayed deployment and what each team contributed. A clear account shows they traced the cause. Ask how they handle a tenant technician who arrives without proper approvals. Ask what they gave the customer at acceptance.
- Ask them to describe a delayed deployment and what each team contributed. A clear account shows they traced the cause.
- Ask how they handle a tenant technician who arrives without proper approvals.
- Ask what they gave the customer at acceptance. Checklists, photos and test results suggest rigor.
- Ask how they handed the tenant to the success team.
Where do we find these candidates?
We look at colocation and interconnection providers with their own delivery or installation teams. Managed services and systems integration firms are another source, where the person ran customer cutovers end to end. Construction or commissioning coordinators can also suit large implementations where handover and acceptance carry most of the risk.

- Construction or commissioning coordination backgrounds, suitable for large handover-heavy work.
Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?
Do not hire a sales support person to run complex deliveries. Do not let the manager promise dates that operations has not agreed to, because missed dates damage the account early. Build in a clear customer acceptance step as well, or disputes about what was delivered tend to surface after go live.
- Hiring a sales support person to run complex deliveries.
- Allowing the manager to promise dates operations has not agreed to.
- Skipping a clear acceptance step, so disputes arise after go live.
Your search in 3 steps
- Size the deployments
We agree the typical project, from small cabinets to large handovers, so the screen matches.
- Probe the delay stories
Conversations are anchored in actual delays and how the candidate resolved them.
- Present the delivery record and the offer
You see what size they handled, who they coordinated and where help was needed. We help you agree where onboarding ends and success begins.
The acceptance moment
Acceptance is where many disputes begin. Ask how the candidate documents what was delivered, what the tenant tested, and who signed. A habit of recording power readings, labelling and connectivity checks suggests someone who has been burned before and learned.
If your contracts tie billing to acceptance, this matters even more because delays have a commercial effect.
Site rules and safety
Tenant technicians arrive with their own habits. The manager must brief them on access, escort rules, work permits and what they may touch. Ask what they do when a vendor ignores a rule.
A candidate who treats rules as an annoyance will eventually cause an incident in a live hall.
Working with finance and legal
Onboarding touches billing start dates, service orders and contractual milestones. Ask how the candidate confirmed that the order matched what was delivered, and what they did when the tenant requested a change after signature.
A manager who quietly accommodates changes can create billing disputes. A manager who refuses everything creates unhappy tenants. Look for someone who routes changes to the proper owner and keeps the tenant informed.
Ask finally how they close out a project. A final walkthrough, an outstanding items list with owners, and a clean introduction to the success team show a manager who finishes, not merely starts.
Tenants also remember the first week. Ask what the candidate sent before move in, such as access lists, contact trees and a plain schedule, because early clarity prevents most of the escalations that follow.

Questions
When will I see candidates?
The pool depends on deployment size. After scoping we update you on progress but make no date promise.
Do onboarding managers who keep tenants happy get counteroffers?
Managers who keep tenants happy are valued, so offers to stay are common. We raise this with each candidate during early calls.
Is relocation needed?
The role often needs presence at the site for walkthroughs. If you allow hybrid work, tell us so the pool widens.
How much site travel does an onboarding manager do between campuses?
Travel depends on how many sites you operate. Set the pattern and expense treatment before offer.
How do I judge fit with operations?
Ask how they resolve a conflict about a schedule with a site engineer. A willingness to follow site rules is a strong sign.
What should I know about fees for an onboarding search?
We raise them early, once deployment size is settled. The agreement provided covers specifics.
