What does this hire really come down to?
A data center marketing manager owns demand generation, content, events, web presence and often sales enablement. Authority usually covers campaign choices and a program budget, while brand direction and pricing messages are set higher up. The role does not generate leads alone. It relies on sales to follow up and on product to supply a story worth telling.
Audience determines the work. Enterprise buyers read about compliance, uptime and support. Network buyers read about carriers and latency. Hyperscale buyers rarely respond to campaigns and rely on direct relationships, so marketing supports with site material and credibility. Pick the audience first.
Adjacent roles differ. A product marketing manager owns positioning of one offer. A brand manager owns identity. A demand generation lead owns pipeline numbers. A single hire often covers all three, and the real question is which one matters most to you now.
What do we check before you see anyone?
Ask what content they produced that engineers or operators praised. Technical credibility is rarely faked. Ask how they worked with sales on lead follow up. Anyone who blames sales or marketing alone has usually not shared accountability. Ask which events they cut and why.

- Ask which events they cut and why. Budget discipline matters in this field.
- Ask how they ensure claims about the facility are accurate, and who reviewed them.
Where do we find these candidates?
We look at colocation, cloud and managed services providers whose marketing supported technical sales. Network, hardware and infrastructure vendors with strong content programs are another source. Business to business agency backgrounds that served infrastructure clients can also suit teams where in house experience is thin.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?
Do not hire a consumer brand marketer and expect technical credibility to follow. Do not choose a generalist when you need someone who owns pipeline. And never let marketing publish facility claims that operations has not checked, because one inaccurate statement about power or uptime can cost a deal.

Your search in 3 steps
- Choose the audience
We agree who you need to reach so candidate conversations are focused on relevant campaigns.
- Probe technical credibility
We test whether candidates can describe the product without borrowing slogans.
- Share the work history and the offer
You see what programs they led, which they supported and who they reported to. Before offer we help you decide how marketing and sales share lead responsibility.
Technical accuracy as a hiring test
Hand the candidate a short technical paragraph about redundancy or cooling and ask them to rewrite it for a procurement lead. Watch what they preserve and what they drop. A good marketer simplifies without making a false claim, and asks you which details are not safe to change.
Facility claims carry legal and reputational weight. A person who treats them casually is a risk.
Budget and measurement
Ask what they cut from a budget and what they learned. In a business with long sales cycles, attribution is imperfect, so look for candidates who can reason about influence rather than quote tidy dashboards.
Ask also how they supported field sales, since facility tours and customer visits often matter more than digital activity.
Working with sales and operations
Tour days, site photography and customer references all depend on cooperation from operations and sellers. Ask how the candidate arranged a facility visit without disrupting the live floor, and what restrictions applied to photographs.
Ask how they treat a customer story. Naming a tenant needs permission and sometimes security review. A candidate who has handled that process knows what can be shown and what cannot.
One more test: ask which messages they refused to publish and why. Resisting an overstated uptime or capacity claim shows the judgment you want guarding your public voice, especially when a seller is pushing for a stronger headline.
Ask as well how they would explain a recent facility upgrade to existing tenants, since retention messaging is part of the job and often neglected by new hires.

Questions
How quickly will candidates reach me?
Specialist marketers are fewer than general ones. We share early candidates after scoping but never promise a date.
Will a marketer with technical credibility be countered by their current company?
Marketers with technical credibility are hard to replace, so counteroffers happen. We ask candidates what would persuade them to stay before you invest time.
Do they need to relocate?
Many marketing roles work remotely with visits to sites and events. Say whether you need regular presence.
Who covers trade show and facility tour trips for the marketing hire?
Events and site visits cause travel. Define the annual pattern so the candidate sees the demand.
How do I judge fit with sales?
Ask what they do when sales dismisses their leads. A practical answer includes shared definitions and follow up.
How are fees treated for a data center marketing search?
We cover that at the start of the search, once the audience is chosen. The agreement you receive sets out the specifics.
