Traveling Journeyman Electrician (Per Diem) for Hyperscale campus builds (multi-building, phased)

A phased hyperscale campus asks a traveling journeyman to do the same task across several buildings in different states of completion, so the fit question is how they handle repetition and shifting handoffs.

This is what we do all day: recruit data center professionals.

What does this hire really come down to?

The difference on a multi-building campus is the layering. One building may be in rough-in while the next is being energized and a third is being commissioned. A traveling journeyman might begin on building one conduit and be moved to building three terminations within weeks.

Ask how they handled changes of area, who gave them tasks, and how they learned each building's drawing revision. Single-building experience can be excellent, but it means the person has never had to track which version of a drawing belongs to which hall. Campus work also brings shared infrastructure: medium-voltage ring, duct banks, central plant and security. The traveler may be given a small repeating assignment, such as a bus duct run or branch panel set, across many halls. The skill is consistency. Ask whether they stayed with one work or rotated, and who checked quality. Also ask about worker orientation, badging and tool rules on large sites, because these add time each time a person moves between buildings.

What do we check before you see anyone?

Ask how they kept track of drawing revisions when areas changed, and who told them a revision was current. Their experience with energized neighbors. Ask how they stayed clear of a live building while working next to it, and what barriers or permits applied.

  • Repeated scopes: which task they repeated across buildings, and how they kept installation consistent without a lead beside them.
  • Their experience with energized neighbors. Ask how they stayed clear of a live building while working next to it, and what barriers or permits applied.
  • Travel record and licensing: current journeyman license and the states where they have worked, remembering licensing does not carry across jurisdictions automatically.

Tell us who you need

Where do we find these candidates?

We search among journeymen who travel between large commercial, industrial and logistics builds, and among electricians from repeat-pattern work such as multi-building warehouse and manufacturing programs. Local union halls near campus sites are another source, particularly for electricians willing to take per diem to cover the commuting radius.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

  • Describing the campus as one project, then moving people between buildings without orientation.
  • Not telling travelers which buildings are live.
  • Expecting single-building speed across all halls without consistent drawings.

Questions we settle before outreach

  1. Map the phases

Tell us which buildings are at which stage so we match the person to the work.

  2. Probe the transitions

We ask about moves between areas and how candidates adapted.

  3. Confirm site rules

We clarify badging, tool and access rules before the person arrives.

Orientation and consistency

On large campuses the first day is often lost to badging, safety orientation and a tool inspection, and that repeats when the traveler is moved to a different gate or contractor. Ask candidates how they used that time and whether they carried their own checklists of what to verify in a new area. Ask who they reported to when moved. Travelers who can name a single point of contact usually keep work consistent, while those who answer to several leads tend to drift between buildings.

Finally, ask what the traveler did when a building they had finished was handed to commissioning and a defect was found in their work. People who return to fix it without argument are the ones who keep a phased program moving, and their references can usually explain how the repair was recorded and who accepted it.

Questions

How soon will we see travelers for a campus build?

We cannot give a number, as availability depends on active projects and the distance involved. A clear phase map helps us find people who fit. We will tell you what we learn from the first conversations.

Do traveling journeymen get counteroffers?

We talk about why the person wants to move and whether they might stay. If that changes, we let you know.

Will they relocate to the campus?

Per diem travelers generally do not relocate permanently, but they move to the area for the duration. We discuss campus length and lodging early. Longer phases make this easier.

How does per diem work on a campus?

Terms depend on your project and any agreement, so we ask for yours early. Travelers compare lodging distance and schedule across sites. Tell us if buildings change daily commutes.

How do we confirm fit for a phased site?

Ask how they handled shifting between buildings and different drawings. A traveler who asks which buildings are live is thinking about safety. Fit is about adapting without constant supervision.

If our campus runs for years, should these travelers be direct hires or contract labor?

Long programs sometimes justify converting good travelers to direct hires, while short bursts suit contract labor. We can lay out both for your phasing and agree written terms before introductions. Tell us which buildings need continuity of crew.
