What does this hire really come down to?

A service sales manager owns the commercial side of service: maintenance agreements, parts, retrofits, upgrades and renewals for generators, UPS, switchgear and batteries. They do not schedule the technicians, but they need to know what those technicians can truly support before they sign anything.

The tradeoff is hunter versus account steward. A hunter opens new customers and may neglect renewals. A steward keeps the base intact and may never ask for a larger work. Your installed base and your current service backlog decide which you need.

Compared with an equipment sales role, the sale is recurring and trust-based, and the buyer is often a facilities manager rather than a project team. Compared with a service operations manager, this person owns customer commitments, not dispatch. The seniority question is whether they manage other sellers or only a territory.

What do we check before you see anyone?

Ask about a service agreement they declined or reshaped because the field team could not support it. Ask how they respond when a customer experiences an outage and the contract's response terms come into question. Ask how they identify a retrofit or upgrade opportunity from service history, and who they involve technically.

Tell us who you need

Where do we find these candidates?

Equipment manufacturers' service sales groups and authorized service channels are the nearest background. Independent critical power service providers offer sellers who understand multi-brand environments. Electrical distribution and generator rental sellers are a smaller source and may need time on maintenance terms.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

Do not reward new bookings while ignoring renewal quality. Do not hire a seller who has no technical credibility with facilities engineers. And do not let the person set response commitments without input from field leadership, because promises the service team cannot keep damage the account faster than lost bookings.

Questions we settle before outreach

  1. Define the book

We learn the installed base, brands and customer type so the search matches the territory.

  2. Probe the declined deal

Candidates describe a deal they shaped to fit service capability.

  3. Check technical credibility and compare

We test how they speak with a facility engineer about a failure. You see who leans hunter and who leans steward, in plain terms.

The promise your technicians must keep

Every agreement the manager signs becomes a schedule for your field team. Ask finalists how they learn what technicians can actually deliver, and whether they have ever walked a site with one. A seller who has never seen a battery room or generator yard struggles to explain work to a facilities manager who has.

Look hard at renewal behavior as well. Ask what they do ninety days before an agreement ends, what they do when a customer has had a bad visit, and how they surface it internally. Quiet customers are not always satisfied ones. Competent service sellers learn this early and build routines around it.

Finally, settle the compensation logic with us before interviews. Whether the role rewards renewals, new work or margin will draw very different people, and candidates read incentives carefully.

Seniority and team shape

A territory seller carries a book and answers for it. A manager of sellers must also coach, forecast honestly and mediate between sellers and field leadership. Tell us which you need, because strong individual sellers do not always enjoy managing peers, and some managers have not sold in years.

Check forecasting habits too. Ask how they categorize a renewal that is likely but unsigned, and what they say to leadership when a large account looks shaky. Candour here protects your staffing plans.

Compensation and what it attracts

Settle the incentive logic with us before interviews. Whether the role rewards renewals, new work or margin will draw very different people, and candidates read plans carefully.

Also say who owns parts pricing and discount approval. A seller who must wait days for an answer loses deals, while one with unchecked discount power can damage margin. Experienced candidates will ask exactly where that line sits.

Questions

How quickly can we see candidates?

We discuss timing once we know the role and location. We keep you updated rather than promising a date before the search starts.

Will candidates be countered?

Sellers with strong books are often countered. We ask how portable the relationships are before you commit.

Do service sellers expect to move if the territory is far from headquarters?

Territory sellers usually live inside their territory, so asking for a move often removes the strongest names. If you need them near the office for planning meetings, tell us how often so we can find people who accept that.

How should we explain travel?

Describe customer visits, regional coverage and any overnight stays. Territory sellers plan around this.

How can we check fit with our service model?

Ask how they would sell a service agreement to a customer on mixed equipment. Their awareness of your delivery limits is the signal.

Should we state the incentive plan before we share the pay range?

Yes, since a seller reads base and incentive together and may decline either alone. Give us both, and we will tell you how they compare with what the market pays for a service book of your size. Fee terms are in the written agreement.
