- High Voltage Switching Engineer / HV Authorized Person
What does this hire really come down to?
A high voltage switching engineer, often called an authorized person, plans and directs switching operations on high voltage equipment. They prepare switching programs, issue safety documents, confirm isolation and earthing, and control who may work on which apparatus. The authority comes from the employer or network owner, not from a course certificate.
This is where remit matters most. An authorized person at one organization may only authorize on that organization's equipment and under its rules. Moving to your site does not carry the authority automatically, and you will need to assess and appoint them under your own procedures. Plan that into the hire.
Adjacent seats include the competent person who carries out the switching under direction, and the senior authorized person who may appoint others. Ask the candidate whether they planned, issued, performed or approved, since each carries different responsibility.
What do we check before you see anyone?
Ask which safety rules or procedures they worked under and who granted their authority. Evidence should be a document, not a claim. Ask how they prepare a switching program and who reviews it. Strong candidates describe peer checks. Ask about a time they refused to proceed.

- Ask about a time they refused to proceed. Judgment under pressure matters more than recall of rules.
- Ask what voltage levels and equipment types they have switched. Experience does not transfer evenly across air, gas insulated and cable systems.
How a search runs
How does The Six-Step Search work?
We use executive-search discipline for technical, frontline and leadership assignments. That means understanding the work, researching the right market and holding meaningful conversations before recommending an introduction. The questions change with the assignment. A shortlist is an outcome of that judgment, not the whole service.
- 01
Search Calibration
We agree what the person must accomplish and what they will actually own. Construction, commissioning and live operations need different questions. We clarify systems, site type, scale, decision authority, reporting lines and the team around the hire.
- 02
Market Mapping
We research comparable sites, projects and teams, then consider adjacent backgrounds where the experience could transfer. A matching title is a starting point, not evidence that someone has handled the same responsibility.
- 03
Professional Contact Intelligence
Contact research helps us approach relevant people appropriately. It enables the search; it is not the product. Public records can be incomplete or out of date, so employment history and responsibility remain questions to discuss and confirm where appropriate.
- 04
Persistent Personalized Outreach
We explain the actual work and why the opportunity may be relevant, then follow up thoughtfully and respectfully. We listen to whether a move makes sense for that person rather than treating a response as proof of interest or fit.
- 05
Live Candidate Qualification
We ask about work personally owned, decisions made and what happened when a plan went wrong. We discuss motivation and practical terms: compensation, shifts, travel, per diem where relevant, availability and authority. We distinguish the candidate's account from anything independently confirmed.
- 06
Candidate Intelligence and Process Support
You receive a reasoned brief: why the person may fit, supporting examples, uncertainties and useful interview questions. We agree which credentials, references or other checks are appropriate and who will complete them. We stay involved through feedback, offer discussions and the start, rather than stopping at an introduction.
Where do we find these candidates?
We search utility network operations and control room backgrounds, where switching authority is formal and audited. Industrial and generation plant electrical teams supply authorized persons used to high voltage on private networks. Specialist high voltage contractors provide field engineers with hands-on switching experience, though their authority may have been limited to client rules.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?
Do not treat an NFPA 70E or similar training certificate as authorization. Do not train does not appoint a person, and the employer decides who is qualified for which tasks. Do not assume authority carries between companies. You must assess and appoint under your own procedures.

- Ignoring the difference between planning and performing switching. Some people only carry out instructions.
Questions we settle before outreach
- Define your rules
We confirm the safety rules, voltages and equipment types the person will control.
- Separate the authority levels
We screen for whether candidates planned, issued, performed or approved switching.
- Probe the paperwork and present the slate
Candidates describe documents, permits and reviews they handled. You receive a short list with notes on what you must assess yourself before appointment.
Interview questions
Ask them to walk through isolating a transformer from a live busbar. Listen for sequence, proving dead, earthing and who confirms each step.
Ask what they do when a switching program does not match the field. The right answer is to stop and revise, not improvise.
Ask how they handle handover between shifts when a switching program is half complete. The record of what is isolated, earthed and tagged must be unambiguous.
Ask how they prove that equipment is dead and what they do if the indication does not match the drawing. Disciplined answers always treat the field as the authority.
Ask how they train and assess others who will work under their permits. Someone who has appointed and checked competent persons carries a different level of responsibility than someone who has only received permits.
Before you appoint anyone
Gather your written safety rules, your list of authorized persons and the apparatus each may control. A new hire will need these on day one.
Plan an assessment that includes a practical switching scenario and a conversation with your own senior authorized person, so the appointment rests on your evidence.
Where do we fill this role?
What does BLS publish for this role?
The figure below comes from the national OEWS row for Electrical Engineers. Read the mapping badge before using it in a budget. A broader occupation can include jobs outside data centers. Compare your seat’s responsibilities and pay basis with the published occupation rather than treating the median as an offer quote.
Broader occupation. Electrical Engineers is a broader occupation based on the work described, not a separate data center wage series. BLS does not distinguish this title, experience level, shift, credentials or data center employers. Confirm the actual duties before using this comparison.

Questions
How soon can authorized persons be presented?
Voltage level and equipment type narrow the pool considerably. After scoping, we say how thin it is rather than quote a figure.
The employer that appointed them may offer to keep them. Does that happen?
It does, because formal authority is hard to replace. We ask what the person wants and tell you if the answer is something you cannot match.
If someone moves from another network, can they switch on our apparatus at once?
No. Authority is granted by the company controlling the equipment, so plan a period to assess and appoint them.
Who covers hotel and allowance on call-out duty at remote sites?
Out-of-hours switching can involve unplanned trips. Describe call-out pay and lodging rules in the offer.
How do I match a utility control room background against an industrial plant one?
Control room staff handle large networks under strict audit, while plant staff know private networks and tight production constraints. Pick the one nearer your system.
If we want one person to also train others, does the search change?
Training and assessing others needs senior authorization and teaching skill. Tell us whether that is core so we can scope it.
