Electrical Commissioning Engineer for Hyperscale campus builds (multi-building, phased)

Data Center Headhunters recruits critical facilities, data center operations, construction and delivery, commissioning, power and cooling, and executive talent for colocation, hyperscale and enterprise sites. We research the market, contact working people and qualify a shortlist for your opening. No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

On a phased hyperscale campus an electrical commissioning engineer is not testing one building; they are repeating and refining a proven sequence across several, while the campus medium voltage backbone stays energised and expanding. Repetition rewards discipline, but also punishes the engineer who stops reading the drawings.

This is what we do all day: recruit data center professionals.

What does this hire really come down to?

The engineer owns the electrical test procedures and witnesses them: relay settings checks, breaker operation, UPS and generator functional tests, and the paralleling and transfer sequences. They do not own protection studies or design changes, but they must question mismatches.

Phased work means new buildings join a campus where earlier ones already carry customer load. The engineer must understand which switchgear, ties and shared utility equipment are live before touching a procedure.

Compared with a mid level engineer on a single building, a lead on a campus manages lessons learned: what failed in building one and must be checked in building four.

What do we check before you see anyone?

Ask what changed in their procedures between the first and later buildings, and why. Have them describe how they confirmed settings on a protection relay against the study, and what they did when they found a difference. Ask how they managed energisation of a new block adjacent to live equipment, including the permits and lockout steps.

How a search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

We use executive-search discipline for technical, frontline and leadership assignments. That means understanding the work, researching the right market and holding meaningful conversations before recommending an introduction. The questions change with the assignment. A shortlist is an outcome of that judgment, not the whole service.

Infrastructure is interconnected. So is the search.
  1. 01

    Search Calibration

We agree what the person must accomplish and what they will actually own. Construction, commissioning and live operations need different questions. We clarify systems, site type, scale, decision authority, reporting lines and the team around the hire.

  2. 02

    Market Mapping

We research comparable sites, projects and teams, then consider adjacent backgrounds where the experience could transfer. A matching title is a starting point, not evidence that someone has handled the same responsibility.

  3. 03

    Professional Contact Intelligence

Contact research helps us approach relevant people appropriately. It enables the search; it is not the product. Public records can be incomplete or out of date, so employment history and responsibility remain questions to discuss and confirm where appropriate.

  4. 04

    Persistent Personalized Outreach

We explain the actual work and why the opportunity may be relevant, then follow up thoughtfully and respectfully. We listen to whether a move makes sense for that person rather than treating a response as proof of interest or fit.

  5. 05

    Live Candidate Qualification

We ask about work personally owned, decisions made and what happened when a plan went wrong. We discuss motivation and practical terms: compensation, shifts, travel, per diem where relevant, availability and authority. We distinguish the candidate's account from anything independently confirmed.

  6. 06

    Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

You receive a reasoned brief: why the person may fit, supporting examples, uncertainties and useful interview questions. We agree which credentials, references or other checks are appropriate and who will complete them. We stay involved through feedback, offer discussions and the start, rather than stopping at an introduction.

Where do we find these candidates?

Electrical commissioning engineers from hyperscale and large colocation programmes where repeated building types are the norm. Independent testing firm engineers who have run protection and switchgear tests, who know settings and test sets in detail. Owner side electrical engineers with energisation experience on campuses who prefer to move to project work.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

Do not assume a repeating design means the same defects. Supply chain substitutions and site conditions differ between buildings. Do not hire someone with a single hyperscale building on their record and expect campus scale judgment. Do not ignore the live adjacent equipment when you describe the role, then wonder why candidates ask about safety.

Questions we settle before outreach

  1. Describe the campus plan

We learn the number of buildings, the phase dates, the medium voltage arrangement and which equipment is already live.

  2. Define the test responsibility and screen for repeat discipline

You specify who writes procedures, who witnesses and who signs. We probe how they learn from earlier buildings and stay critical of familiar designs.

  3. Present candidates

You receive notes on campus exposure and testing depth.

What repetition hides

Across several buildings the same equipment arrives, and the temptation is to shorten tests that passed before. Ask the candidate which parts of the procedure they refused to shorten and why, and what failures in later buildings justified that caution.

Ask also about shared systems. A medium voltage ring or common utility feed means building four can disturb building one, so the engineer should be able to name the interlocks and permits that controlled it.

Handing between buildings

Ask how lessons from one building reached the next team: a revised procedure, a note in the issues log, a conversation with the vendor. Engineers who cannot name one specific change from an earlier building probably executed rather than learned.

Adjacent levels

A level two engineer on the campus runs witnessed tests from approved procedures. A lead owns the procedures and the settings checks, and talks to the utility and owner about shared equipment. Decide which seat you are filling, because candidates at the wrong level will either be bored or overreach.

Ask the level two candidate what they would escalate and the lead candidate what they would refuse to sign.

Utility and owner interfaces

Ask who dealt with the utility on energisation and what documents were needed first. An engineer who cannot name the inspection, the protection settings approval or the witness list probably stood behind someone who did.

Questions

How early can we see engineers with campus phase experience?

Timing depends on how much medium voltage and phased experience you require. We will share a realistic view at intake without promising a number.

What if an engineer's programme counters as later buildings are still ahead?

Engineers on active hyperscale programmes are often retained aggressively. We discuss what would make them leave before presenting them.

Will an electrical engineer move for a campus that runs over many years?

A long programme gives candidates reasons to put down roots, which helps. Make your relocation offer clear if you would rather hire locally than use travelers.

How do per diem and rotation work for engineers on a phased campus?

Specify whether you offer a long stay arrangement across several buildings or a per phase assignment. Engineers who have followed campuses before will ask about both.

How do we judge whether an engineer will keep questioning a familiar design?

Look for curiosity as much as discipline. Ask what they found in the fourth building that the third did not show.

What should we ask about terms if later buildings will need more engineers?

The terms are agreed in writing before we start, and that includes what happens if your phase plan changes. If you will need engineers for later buildings, ask about it at intake.
