Electrical Commissioning Engineer for AI / HPC high-density and liquid cooling builds

High density AI halls change the electrical commissioning job in specific ways: busway and rack power at much higher density, load that jumps rapidly, and cooling that depends entirely on electrical continuity. The engineer you want has tested how the power system behaves when the load does not behave.

This is what we do all day: recruit data center professionals.

What does this hire really come down to?

The engineer owns the electrical procedures and witnessed results. They do not own the cooling system, but they must know which pumps, controls and power paths cooling depends upon and test those dependencies. They work next to mechanical commissioning staff and share the integrated test.

Ability to speak mechanical, even without being a mechanical specialist, matters.

Adjacent levels differ in judgment about transients. A junior engineer runs the script while a senior engineer anticipates what a fast load step does to a generator or UPS.

What do we check before you see anyone?

Ask how they test a UPS and generator response to rapid load changes using load banks, and what limits that simulation has. Have them describe how they verified the electrical path that powers cooling pumps and controls, and what happens during a transfer.

Tell us who you need

Where do we find these candidates?

  • Electrical commissioning engineers from large colocation and hyperscale programmes who have energised high capacity halls.
  • Testing firm backgrounds with strong power quality and protection exposure.
  • Power engineers from owner or operator teams who handled capacity upgrades and understand failure modes.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

Do not hire a standard data center electrical engineer and expect transient judgment they have not practised. Do not leave cooling dependencies out of the electrical work, which means no one tests the path that keeps liquid moving. Do not treat a safety training certificate as examples of task qualification.

Questions we settle before outreach

  1. Describe the density

We learn rack power levels, distribution style and generator and UPS arrangement.

  2. Set the integrated test boundary and probe transient understanding

You tell us where electrical testing stops and mechanical begins. We ask for concrete tests and results, not general knowledge.

  3. Present candidates

You receive candidates with notes on density exposure and test depth.

The transient questions

Ask the candidate what they expect a UPS to do when a large block of load steps on within a fraction of a second, and how load banks can only approximate that. A thoughtful engineer will separate what the test proves from what only live servers would show.

Then ask about generator behaviour under the same conditions, including frequency and voltage recovery and what the paralleling controls were doing. They should talk about observed waveforms, not general theory.

Protecting the path to cooling

Pumps, valves and controllers need power that survives a transfer. Ask how the candidate confirmed that a transfer would not trip the cooling controls, and who was in the room when they tested it. This question quickly shows whether they have crossed the mechanical boundary in practice.

Adjacent levels

A junior engineer executes electrical scripts for one block of the hall. A senior engineer decides how to simulate the load, signs the results and tells the owner what the test could not show. Ask candidates which of those two jobs they actually did on their last project.

The question also exposes vendor handling. Ask who commissioned the power shelves and rack level protection, and whether that sat with them or the equipment supplier.

Thermal examples

Ask what thermal imaging or temperature logging they used on busway joints and breaker lugs under load, and what temperature rise made them stop the test. A candidate who gives a specific example understands what heavy continuous current does to a poor connection.

Questions

How early can we see engineers who have tested high density power?

It depends on how high your density is and how much transient testing experience you need. We will give you an honest view at intake without a numeric promise.

What if a candidate's current programme makes a counteroffer?

We talk about why the person wants to move and whether they might stay. If that changes, we let you know.

Do engineers move for AI power work or prefer to travel?

Some are happy to settle near a strong programme, but many have built a life around rotation. State what you can offer and we will approach the matching group.

How should per diem be set for engineers moving between AI sites?

Clarify whether lodging is paid directly or through a daily rate, and whether weekends at home are covered. Engineers on high density sites compare these terms carefully.

How do we see whether an electrical engineer can work with mechanical colleagues?

Put them in a short conversation with your mechanical lead about a shared test. Good fit shows when they ask about the cooling side.

What do we need to have ready if the engineer starts on contract?

You will have the terms in writing before we approach a candidate. If the role could convert from a contract arrangement, discuss that with us first so the paperwork matches.
