We research the market, contact working people and qualify a shortlist for your opening. No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

A retail colocation operator sells space, power and connections to customers who compare it against every other site in the market, so the seller must know both the product and the room.

What does this hire really come down to?

A colocation sales executive sells cabinets, cages and interconnection to enterprise and network customers. The deal is shaped by power per rack, cross connect pricing and the availability of a specific room. The seller must be accurate about what can be delivered, since the operations team will have to deliver it.

The tradeoff is hunter against farmer. Some executives open new accounts well but let existing ones drift. Others grow accounts but rarely open new ones. Your pipeline and current customer base tell you which you need.

Interconnection adds a twist. A seller with a network background sells to carriers and can create ecosystem value. A seller with an enterprise background sells to IT teams. They are different conversations. Compensation shapes behavior. A plan that pays on signing alone rewards overpromising, so consider paying part on delivery. Pay attention to how they speak about the product when it is not the best in the market. Honest sellers describe real strengths and say where a competitor is better. Sellers who disparage everyone else tend to lose repeat customers. Ask how leads reach the seller. A seller who must build a pipeline from nothing needs a different profile than one who receives inbound demand.

What do we check before you see anyone?

Ask what quota they carried, what they sold against it and how they know. Ask what types of customer they closed and what the deal sizes were. Ask how they price power and cross connects and what they do under price pressure.

  • Ask what quota they carried, what they sold against it and how they know.
  • Ask what types of customer they closed and what the deal sizes were.
  • Ask how they price power and cross connects and what they do under price pressure.
  • Ask how they work with operations to confirm capacity before promising it.
  • Ask how they handle a customer who wants a power density the room cannot support.
  • Ask how they build relationships with network providers.
  • Ask what they did with an account that was about to leave.
  • Ask how they build a quote for a customer who will grow later and wants room held in advance.
  • Ask how they structure a deal for a customer who wants to start small and expand, and how they protect the capacity in between.
  • Ask how they work with the operations team after a sale closes and who they call when the install slips.
  • Ask how they track their pipeline and what they do with stalled deals.
  • Ask what they know about the market's major networks and which they have brought into a facility.

How a search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

We use executive-search discipline for technical, frontline and leadership assignments. That means understanding the work, researching the right market and holding meaningful conversations before recommending an introduction. The questions change with the assignment. A shortlist is an outcome of that judgment, not the whole service.

Infrastructure is interconnected. So is the search.
  1. 01

    Search Calibration

We agree what the person must accomplish and what they will actually own. Construction, commissioning and live operations need different questions. We clarify systems, site type, scale, decision authority, reporting lines and the team around the hire.

  2. 02

    Market Mapping

We research comparable sites, projects and teams, then consider adjacent backgrounds where the experience could transfer. A matching title is a starting point, not evidence that someone has handled the same responsibility.

  3. 03

    Professional Contact Intelligence

Contact research helps us approach relevant people appropriately. It enables the search; it is not the product. Public records can be incomplete or out of date, so employment history and responsibility remain questions to discuss and confirm where appropriate.

  4. 04

    Persistent Personalized Outreach

We explain the actual work and why the opportunity may be relevant, then follow up thoughtfully and respectfully. We listen to whether a move makes sense for that person rather than treating a response as proof of interest or fit.

  5. 05

    Live Candidate Qualification

We ask about work personally owned, decisions made and what happened when a plan went wrong. We discuss motivation and practical terms: compensation, shifts, travel, per diem where relevant, availability and authority. We distinguish the candidate's account from anything independently confirmed.

  6. 06

    Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

You receive a reasoned brief: why the person may fit, supporting examples, uncertainties and useful interview questions. We agree which credentials, references or other checks are appropriate and who will complete them. We stay involved through feedback, offer discussions and the start, rather than stopping at an introduction.

Where do we find these candidates?

These sellers come from other colocation providers, network and connectivity firms, managed services and cloud sales. Colocation sellers know the product. Network sellers know carriers. Managed services sellers know IT buyers. Cloud sellers know consumption models. They move when territories change, when compensation shifts or when an operator expands into a market they like.

  • They move when territories change, when compensation shifts or when an operator expands into a market they like. Some want a bigger book. Others want a better product. Clear territory rules and honest capacity data matter. Candidates compare commission plans line by line, including accelerators, clawbacks and how territory changes are handled. Some come from network providers where selling to carriers is routine. Others come from managed hosting where bundles dominate. Retail colocation is different from both, and candidates ask how you price and where room is available to sell.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

  • Hiring a seller who promises capacity operations cannot deliver.
  • Mixing hunter and farmer roles without saying which is which.
  • Changing territories mid year and expecting loyalty.

Questions we settle before outreach

  1. Define the book

We ask what accounts, territory and quota the seller will inherit.

  2. Choose hunter or farmer

We help you decide which behavior you need most.

  3. Test capacity honesty

We ask candidates how they handled a deal operations could not fulfill.

Questions

How do we check claims about quota attainment?

Ask for specifics and references. Candidates with real results explain them easily, including the years they missed.

What do sellers want to know about commission before they interview?

They ask about accelerators and what happens when a territory changes. You decide the structure, so put it in writing early. Vague commission terms end conversations with experienced sellers.

Should sellers cover network providers separately?

Often yes. Carrier conversations differ from enterprise IT conversations, and mixing them dilutes both.

How do we handle a seller who brings customers from a former employer?

Ask about restrictions they carry and avoid putting them in conflict. A clean start protects both you and them.

Is a technical background required?

It helps. A seller who can read a power design quotes more accurately and loses fewer deals to rework.

How should a seller treat a customer who wants more density than the room supports?

They should check with operations and offer a different room or a phased plan. Ask for an example of how they handled it.
