Senior Project Manager, Data Center for Hyperscale campus builds (multi-building, phased)

On a phased campus the senior project manager is the person who keeps buildings from competing with one another, and you need to know whether a candidate has actually done that.

This is what we do all day: recruit data center professionals.

What does this hire really come down to?

A senior manager on a campus carries the program view. The building managers run their own buildings, but the senior decides when two phases want the same crews, the same utility outage or the same delivery slot. They also hold the owner's attention across the long run, which means managing owner staff turnover as well as construction.

The distinction from the project manager is that the senior owns trade-offs, not tasks. Ask how they decided which building got priority when both could not be satisfied, and how they explained it to the manager who lost. Candidates who say there was never a conflict have probably not worked at that scale.

Compare with a program director, who steers the owner's business case. The senior stays close enough to the field to know why a wall is late. Make sure your search is not for someone who has drifted too far from the work.

What do we check before you see anyone?

Ask how they sequenced crew and equipment allocation across overlapping phases. Ask what standards or lessons they pushed from one building to the next, and who resisted. Ask how they managed owner staff changes midway through the campus. Ask how they supported a struggling building manager without taking over the job.

Tell us who you need

Where do we find these candidates?

Senior managers who stayed on one campus across multiple buildings are the best match, since they have seen the whole cycle. Senior managers from other large industrial programs bring comparable scale of utilities and phasing. Owner-side program managers can cross, but may need to show they can handle builder-side cost pressure.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

Do not hire for the visible first building and ignore who will handle the quiet conflicts between phases. Do not expect a senior manager to micromanage each building, which wastes the role. Define the boundary with the program director, causing duplicate effort.

Questions we settle before outreach

  1. State the conflicts to be solved

We ask where your phases collide and screen for experience with those exact collisions.

  2. Look for campus longevity

We search for people who followed a program through several phases and can discuss what changed.

  3. Test the loser conversation and align on the program line

We ask how they explained a priority decision to the manager who lost it. We help you define where the senior stops and the program director starts.

Priority and fairness

Ask the candidate how they documented why one building had priority. Campuses run on trust between managers, and a senior who decides without explaining loses that trust quickly. The best answers show a record, a conversation and a later check that the call was right.

What a senior hands down

Ask what a building manager received from them at the start of a phase: a schedule, a list of owner preferences, a warning about a particular inspector. The answer shows whether the senior builds a shared memory for the campus or keeps it in their head.

Ask also what they would do if the owner reassigned half the building managers midway. Seniors with real campus experience have usually faced this and can describe how they rebuilt trust, and what they would do differently.

Questions

How quickly will you share a shortlist for this seat?

We discuss timing once we know the role and location. We keep you updated rather than promising a date before the search starts.

Will candidates counter after months on a campus?

Likely, since their current owner will not want a break in continuity. Ask what would keep them and whether they are leaving because the program is ending or for another reason.

Does relocation work for senior campus roles?

Campuses may stay in one region for years, so relocation can make sense if you describe the duration honestly. Some candidates prefer to commute or rotate, so ask what they want.

How do travel and per diem apply?

If the senior manages several sites, travel patterns vary. Define what is covered and how many weeks away are expected, since senior candidates weigh this against family time.

How do I assess fit with building managers?

Let the finalist meet two or three of them and ask how they would coach each. Notice whether they ask about individual strengths. Managers will tell you afterward if they felt heard.

How do your fees apply?

Fee terms are in the agreement signed before work begins, and we explain them plainly. Ask us about anything unclear for a senior campus seat.
