Senior Project Manager, Data Center for AI / HPC high-density and liquid cooling builds

A senior manager on a high-density build has to turn an unsettled design into a believable promise for the owner, and you need to find someone who has done that without losing credibility.

This is what we do all day: recruit data center professionals.

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

What does this hire really come down to?

The senior seat here owns the relationship between the owner's technology team and the construction team. Hardware plans, rack density and cooling choices shift, and the senior decides what to commit to, what to hold open and what to price as a change.

Ask what your owner's technology team is like, because it determines how much of this role is diplomacy. Compared with the project manager, the senior makes commitments that the building must then keep. They decide whether to buy long-lead equipment against an uncertain design, and take the risk. A candidate who has never owned such a decision may be capable but untested. Ask for a purchase they made early, why, and how it turned out.

The senior also watches the supply chain: pumps, heat exchangers, switchgear and cooling distribution units can have uneven lead times. Look for people who track those risks without being told.

What do we check before you see anyone?

Ask for an early purchase made against an incomplete design and how it was justified to the owner. Ask how they explained a schedule slip caused by a late hardware change. Ask what they learned about liquid systems that they would now insist on at the start of a job.

Where do we find these candidates?

Senior managers who delivered dense halls with chilled water or direct liquid cooling are the narrow and best pool. Senior managers from large mechanical contractors with process work bring supply chain knowledge and fluid discipline. Owner-side technical program managers may cross over and understand the hardware team, but may not have carried builder-side risk.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

  • Hiring a general data center senior and assuming liquid cooling is only a variation.
  • Ignoring risk tolerance: some seniors are cautious, and this seat often needs measured boldness.
  • Not meeting the owner's technology team before the offer.

Questions we settle before outreach

  1. Describe the owner's team

We ask who the senior will face and how often their requirements change.

  2. Find real density experience

We screen for fluid, power and hardware interface specifics rather than general claims.

  3. Test risk judgment and arrange the owner meeting

We ask for a decision made with incomplete information and its outcome. We suggest finalists meet the technology team before a decision, to check mutual credibility.

Early commitments

Ask what they bought before the design was complete and who was told. Ask what the owner did when the purchase later proved wrong or right. A senior who can discuss both outcomes openly is more likely to handle the next uncertain decision well.

Ask finally what they would refuse to promise the owner this quarter, and why.

Supplier and hardware teams

Ask how they dealt with a cooling or hardware supplier who changed a requirement after drawings were issued. Strong seniors describe a written change process and a direct conversation with the supplier's engineers, not only email with their sales contact.

Ask also how they decided who within the construction team should speak to the owner's technology staff. Dense builds produce many opinions, and the senior must control which ones reach the owner, and in what form.

Questions

How fast will a shortlist arrive?

The pool of seniors with high-density experience is small, so timing depends on who is free. We will tell you early what we see. We do not offer a numeric promise.

Do these seniors usually receive counteroffers?

We talk about why the person wants to move and whether they might stay. If that changes, we let you know.

What about relocation at this level?

These builds can sit in remote areas, so some candidates prefer rotations to moving. Decide which you can support and say so before interviews.

How should travel and per diem be handled?

Senior managers may split time among sites, the owner's office and suppliers. Define the expected pattern and the reimbursement, since heavy travel affects acceptance.

How do I judge fit with an unsettled design?

Ask how they behaved the last time the design changed after the budget was set. People who describe calm resets with the owner, and a written record, usually fit this environment.

How do your fees apply to this search?

Fee terms are in the agreement signed before work begins, and we explain them in plain language. Ask us about anything unclear for a senior high-density seat.
