Project Manager, Data Center for AI / HPC high-density and liquid cooling builds
High-density builds change the project manager's job because the cooling and power design is still moving after construction starts, and you need someone who can manage that without losing the schedule.
This is what we do all day: recruit data center professionals.

What does this hire really come down to?
On an AI or HPC build the manager coordinates a design that is often revised late: rack density, cooling method and power distribution may all shift as hardware plans change. The manager does not choose the technology, but must price and sequence changes, and tell the owner honestly what a revision does to the date.
Ask whether your project's design is settled or still evolving, because that decides who you need. Liquid cooling adds trades and risks that air-cooled work did not have. Piping, flushing, pressure testing and leak detection involve mechanical contractors, controls vendors and often the hardware supplier. A manager unfamiliar with these interfaces will discover them as delays. Look for someone who has coordinated piping and fluid commissioning, not only electrical.
Adjacent levels differ here. A project engineer handles shop drawings and vendor questions. A senior project manager carries the owner's strategy and several concurrent halls. This seat runs one build, including the daily pressure from owners who want hardware live quickly.
What do we check before you see anyone?
Ask what they did the last time a cooling or power design changed after procurement, and how they handled long-lead orders already placed. Ask who owned pipe flushing, filtration and pressure testing on a liquid system and how failures were closed.

How we help you hire
- 01
Tell us who you need
Tell us about the role, experience, location and pay. We talk through what matters to you.
- 02
We find and speak with candidates
We approach suitable people directly, including people who are not applying to job ads.
- 03
You meet the strongest matches
We explain their background, interest in the job and our view. You decide who to interview.
- 04
We help you complete the hire
We help with feedback, the offer and start arrangements, and stay in touch as you make your decision.
Where do we find these candidates?
Managers who ran dense colocation or cloud halls with chilled water or rear-door cooling are the nearest match. Mechanical contractor project managers with process piping or cleanroom experience bring fluid discipline, but may need help with owner reporting. National laboratory and semiconductor project managers understand pressure, purity and tight tolerances, though not always the data center's power scale.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?
Do not hire a manager with strong air-cooled experience and assume liquid will be learned on the job. Do not treat hardware arrival dates as fixed when they often move, leaving the manager without a plan. Do not ignore how well the candidate can communicate bad schedule news to a demanding owner.

Questions we settle before outreach
- Pin down what is still moving
We ask which parts of the design are fixed and which may change, then screen for comfort with that.
- Separate liquid from air experience
We ask for specifics about piping, flushing and testing so a generic cooling claim does not pass.
- Interview with the mechanical lead and brief you on the tradeoffs
We encourage a conversation with whoever will lead the fluid trades before a decision. We tell you what each finalist is strongest at and where they will need backup.
Questions about fluid commissioning
Ask who signed off that a loop was clean before hardware connected. Ask what happened when water quality did not meet the supplier's requirement. The manager need not run the test, but must know who does, who accepts it, and what stops the schedule when it fails.
Temporary conditions
Ask what temporary power, chilled water or test loads were used before the permanent systems were ready, and who agreed they could be removed safely. High-density work often runs on temporary arrangements for a long time, and the manager needs a record of each one.

Questions
How soon can I see a shortlist for a high-density build?
It depends on how much liquid cooling exposure you require, since that narrows the pool. We tell you early if the brief is tight. We do not give a numeric timeline.
Will candidates counter if they are on a hot AI project?
Many are on projects the owner prizes, so counteroffers are common. Ask what would keep them and whether they want the next project or just a raise. We help you test the answer.
Do I need to offer relocation?
These builds go where power is available, often far from major cities. Candidates who are willing to move typically expect help, though some prefer a travel arrangement instead. Decide which you will fund.
How do travel and per diem apply?
Some managers rotate between a home base and the site on a schedule. Define the rotation and what is reimbursed, because people on dense builds work long weeks and compare terms carefully.
How do I judge fit with a fast-changing design?
Ask for a story where the plan changed after money was spent. Candidates who explain how they reset the plan, rather than who was to blame, tend to cope with that environment.
How do your fees work on this search?
Fee terms are in the agreement signed before work begins, and we explain them in plain language. Ask us anything about how they apply to this seat.
