What does this hire really come down to?
An MEP superintendent coordinates the work that matters most on a data center. Medium voltage gear, generators, cooling plants, and piping all have to arrive, set, connect, and be tested in an order that makes sense. The general superintendent looks at the whole site. This person looks at the systems.
Experience in this seat is rarely visible on paper because the title often sits under a general superintendent or project manager. We dig into what the person actually directed, because many carry the work without carrying the title. It also helps to ask how they were trained, since formal apprenticeship and informal field learning produce different strengths in systems knowledge. Their value shows in the details of energization. They know the sequence for bringing power on, who has to sign off, and what must be done before a test can start. They know pre-functional checklists are not paperwork but proof that the work is ready. Ask what happens when a piece of gear arrives damaged or incomplete. A seasoned person describes the claim, the substitute plan, and how the schedule absorbed it. A newer one describes the frustration. Ask them to describe one test that failed on the first attempt and what the crew did over the next few days to fix it.
A former electrician sees conductors and terminations quickly but may be weaker on piping. A mechanical person has the opposite bias. The best MEP superintendents have spent time learning the other side and respect both foremen. Another factor is language with the design team. The best ones can explain a field issue in terms an engineer accepts, so questions get answered quickly. That habit saves more time over a project than any scheduling trick, and it is usually obvious within a few minutes of conversation.
What do we check before you see anyone?
Ask them to walk through it. Someone who did it can name steps and approvals. Ask what they did during each stage and who they worked with. Ask how they tracked completion and what happened when a system failed a check.
- Medium voltage energization sequence: ask them to walk through it. Someone who did it can name steps and approvals.
- Commissioning support from Level 3 through Level 5: ask what they did during each stage and who they worked with.
- Pre-functional checklist closeout: ask how they tracked completion and what happened when a system failed a check.
- Trade background: ask which side they came from and how they learned the other.
- Coordination of overlapping trades: ask how they handled a conflict between electrical and mechanical work.
- Relationships with testing agents: ask how they prepared for third party tests and what went wrong once.
How a search runs
How does The Six-Step Search work?
We use executive-search discipline for technical, frontline and leadership assignments. That means understanding the work, researching the right market and holding meaningful conversations before recommending an introduction. The questions change with the assignment. A shortlist is an outcome of that judgment, not the whole service.
- 01
Search Calibration
We agree what the person must accomplish and what they will actually own. Construction, commissioning and live operations need different questions. We clarify systems, site type, scale, decision authority, reporting lines and the team around the hire.
- 02
Market Mapping
We research comparable sites, projects and teams, then consider adjacent backgrounds where the experience could transfer. A matching title is a starting point, not evidence that someone has handled the same responsibility.
- 03
Professional Contact Intelligence
Contact research helps us approach relevant people appropriately. It enables the search; it is not the product. Public records can be incomplete or out of date, so employment history and responsibility remain questions to discuss and confirm where appropriate.
- 04
Persistent Personalized Outreach
We explain the actual work and why the opportunity may be relevant, then follow up thoughtfully and respectfully. We listen to whether a move makes sense for that person rather than treating a response as proof of interest or fit.
- 05
Live Candidate Qualification
We ask about work personally owned, decisions made and what happened when a plan went wrong. We discuss motivation and practical terms: compensation, shifts, travel, per diem where relevant, availability and authority. We distinguish the candidate's account from anything independently confirmed.
- 06
Candidate Intelligence and Process Support
You receive a reasoned brief: why the person may fit, supporting examples, uncertainties and useful interview questions. We agree which credentials, references or other checks are appropriate and who will complete them. We stay involved through feedback, offer discussions and the start, rather than stopping at an introduction.
Where do we find these candidates?
MEP superintendents come from mechanical and electrical subcontractors, from general contractors with self-perform capability, and from owner side commissioning teams. Many were foremen or general foremen first. Some moved over from hospital or industrial plant work where systems were tested heavily.
- MEP superintendents come from mechanical and electrical subcontractors, from general contractors with self-perform capability, and from owner side commissioning teams. Many were foremen or general foremen first. Some moved over from hospital or industrial plant work where systems were tested heavily.
- They move when a program ends or when the work shifts to something that does not match their skills. Some want to step up to general superintendent and have no path. Others want to get out of the trade company and work on the general side. We ask where they want to be in three years, then judge whether your seat fits.
Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?
Do not hire a trade foreman for a coordination role without testing their comfort with other trades. Do not assume one trade background covers both. Gaps show up when systems meet. Do not leave commissioning agents out of the interview.

Questions we settle before outreach
- List the systems the superintendent will coordinate
We ask what gear is on site, what voltage class is involved, and when testing starts. That tells us which people have done similar work.
- Screen for sequence knowledge
We ask candidates to describe energization and checklist closeout in their own words. You get our view of who has actually done it.
- Book calls with the trade leads who will report in
We set up interviews with your general superintendent and project manager, collect feedback, and handle references and offer details.
Where do we fill this role?
What does BLS publish for this role?
The figure below comes from the national OEWS row for Construction Managers. Read the mapping badge before using it in a budget. A broader occupation can include jobs outside data centers. Compare your seat’s responsibilities and pay basis with the published occupation rather than treating the median as an offer quote.
Broader occupation. Construction Managers is a broader occupation based on the work described, not a separate data center wage series. BLS does not distinguish this title, experience level, shift, credentials or data center employers. Confirm the actual duties before using this comparison.

Questions
What do you need to know before sending an MEP superintendent shortlist?
We need the mix of electrical, mechanical and controls work, and the number of trade leads. An MEP superintendent coordinates all of them.
How do I handle a counteroffer to an MEP superintendent?
Ask what the person wants that the current employer lacks. Many MEP superintendents leave over coordination authority or schedule control.
Does an MEP superintendent move for a campus job, or does the role stay with travelers?
Travelers often keep a home elsewhere and move between campuses, while others want to settle near one long project. Say which you prefer and what relocation help you will offer.
What should the per diem rules say for an MEP superintendent on a long campus build?
Your company writes them, and long builds raise questions about pauses and weather delays. Set the daily rate, the lodging cap and what happens to both when work stops for a week.
Do I need an MEP superintendent if I already have electrical and mechanical superintendents?
Yes, if conflicts between trades are costing days. The MEP superintendent owns coordination between them. If conflicts are rare, you may not need one.
What do I pay if I use you to hire an MEP superintendent?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. The fee scope is limited to this role, and your approver can confirm it before interviews.
