MEP Manager for AI / HPC high-density and liquid cooling builds

An MEP manager on an AI or high density build coordinates power and cooling that sit much closer to the racks than conventional design, so the model, the field and the vendors all have less room for error.

This is what we do all day: recruit data center professionals.

What does this hire really come down to?

The seat covers electrical distribution sized for heavy rack loads, busway and cable routing, and the fluid systems that take heat away from the equipment. The manager resolves clashes between large conductors, pipe manifolds and structure, and keeps packages released in the order the hardware arrives. Engineers still own design intent.

Pace is the difference. Designs for this equipment shift while construction proceeds, because chip and rack specifications change. The manager must absorb revisions without letting the model and the field drift apart.

Compared with a general data hall seat, the manager here deals with fewer, denser systems that are less forgiving. A strong generalist may need support on fluid cleanliness or very high current terminations.

What do we check before you see anyone?

Ask how they managed a late design revision to a cooling or power layout and who approved the change in the field. Have them describe how they coordinated manifold and busway positions against rack layouts, and what they did when vendor dimensions changed.

Where do we find these candidates?

We look at MEP managers from recent high density data hall builds, semiconductor fabrication and process facilities with heavy utilities, and managers who have run pilot deployments of direct to chip cooling. Experience of this kind is new for many people, so we also consider strong hyperscale managers and test how quickly they have taken on unfamiliar systems.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

Do not expect a long track record on equipment that has only recently been installed at scale. Look for learning speed and relevant adjacent work. Do not ignore the electrical side because liquid cooling is the headline. Power density drives the same risk.

  • Overlooking the controls and leak detection work. Ask who owns the sensors and valves that protect the hardware during the first fill.

Questions we settle before outreach

  1. Pin down the equipment

We confirm the cooling method and rack density you are planning, since candidates differ in what they have touched.

  2. Test for revision handling

We ask for specific examples of managing design change.

  3. Report the gaps

Each shortlist entry states what the person has not yet seen.

Interview prompts for dense builds

Ask the candidate what happens to a model when a cooling vendor changes manifold dimensions after prefabrication has started. Look for how they stop orders, who they inform and what it costs.

Ask how they would coordinate high current electrical terminations with fluid piping in the same space, and who must be present for the first energization.

Judging unfamiliar experience

Because few people have long histories here, look at how fast the person learned a previous new system. Ask what they read, who they called and what they got wrong.

Power and cooling interface

The point where electrical and mechanical meet is where this seat earns its keep. Ask the candidate who decided where the coolant distribution units and the power supplies sit relative to each other, and what was moved after the first mockup.

Ask how they handled a trade that wanted to start before the other was ready. Someone with real experience describes the standoff and the person who settled it.

Finally, ask what they would want settled before agreeing to start: vendor lead times, owner approval speed on design changes and who may stop an install. People who have run these jobs ask those questions first, and the quality of their questions is itself examples of experience.

Questions

How soon will you show us a shortlist?

We do not give numeric promises, since experience with this equipment is limited. We will explain after intake how far we may need to widen the profile.

Do candidates get counteroffers here?

We talk about why the person wants to move and whether they might stay. If that changes, we let you know.

Would an MEP manager move for an AI cooling build?

Many follow this work, especially people who have already worked on dense halls. Give us the site, the expected equipment delivery period and any housing you can offer.

Do we need a stipend for a manager on a dense cooling job?

Plan on it if the site is remote, and say whether it is a stipend or direct lodging. Candidates comparing offers on dense builds ask early because several companies are competing.

How do we assess fit for our team?

Ask how they work with vendor engineers whose recommendations differ from the drawings. The answer shows whether they escalate or improvise.

Does an unusual technical brief affect how you are paid?

The approved terms on this page apply. A brief this specific changes how we search, not how the terms read.
