Mechanical Superintendent for Hyperscale campus builds (multi-building, phased)
On a phased campus the mechanical superintendent keeps piping, chillers and air systems moving across halls at different stages. You need someone who can hold several buildings in their head and trust their foremen to run each one.
This is what we do all day: recruit data center professionals.

What does this hire really come down to?
The mechanical superintendent on a campus directs the field for chilled water plants, distribution piping, air handling and associated controls interfaces. They sequence work between buildings, coordinate crane and rigging for large equipment, and decide when a building is ready for flushing, testing and handoff. Cost, contract and design belong to the project manager and engineer.
A campus adds shared infrastructure. A central plant or underground loop may serve several halls, so the superintendent has to bring it online in stages while halls remain under construction or live. That calls for careful isolation, temporary connections and clear communication with whoever operates the finished side.
Adjacent levels are different. A mechanical general foreman manages crews in one hall. The superintendent coordinates foremen across buildings. A general superintendent holds the whole campus above all trades. If your campus has a strong general superintendent, a mechanical superintendent with a narrower reach may be enough.
What do we check before you see anyone?
Ask them to describe how they staged a central plant or shared loop for halls that opened in different months. Specific details about isolation valves and temporary tie-ins show real experience. Ask how they managed flushing and cleanliness of piping across several buildings.

- Ask how they managed flushing and cleanliness of piping across several buildings. The answer should include sequences and records, not only the idea of cleanliness.
- Ask how they planned crane and rigging for large equipment across overlapping phases.
How we help you hire

We help with feedback, the offer and start arrangements, and stay in touch as you make your decision.
Where do we find these candidates?
Look at mechanical superintendents from contractors with repeating hall designs, general foremen who ran multiple areas, and superintendents from central utility plants on industrial or university campuses. People who built district energy systems understand phased connections particularly well. A candidate from one hall builds may be a fit if they handled a central plant.

- A candidate from one hall builds may be a fit if they handled a central plant. Without that, the central plant coordination is the main risk, so test it directly.
Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?
Do not hire for a single hall record and assume campus scale follows. Several foremen is a different job. Do not skip the shared infrastructure conversation. Ask who owns the central plant sequence and who gives consent to isolate it.

- Overlooking operator handoff. A superintendent who does not talk to the future operations team will hand over undocumented systems.
Questions we settle before outreach
- Learn the shared systems
We ask which plants and loops serve multiple buildings and how they will come online.
- Define the reporting chain
We confirm whether a general superintendent sits above the role.
- Test phased startup experience, then report
Candidates explain how they isolated and connected systems in stages. Each person is presented with their work and the one thing to probe further.
Questions about phased mechanical startup
Ask how they kept a live hall protected while piping was tied in next door. Ask who authorized each isolation.
Ask what documentation they gave the operations team when a building opened.
Ask how they handled the first hall's chilled water cleanliness problems, if any, and what changed for the second. Ask how they decided when a foreman was ready to run a building alone, and what they did when the answer was not yet.
Ask what they did when rigging for a large chiller conflicted with a neighboring hall's work.

Questions
When can we see a shortlist for a campus mechanical superintendent?
We discuss timing once we know the role and location. We keep you updated rather than promising a date before the search starts.
What if they receive a counteroffer?
We talk about why the person wants to move and whether they might stay. If that changes, we let you know.
Must they relocate to a remote campus?
Campuses are often remote, so relocation or rotation is common. We ask about family and housing early. Your support for moves shapes the pool.
How do travel and per diem work on a campus?
Terms are agreed between you and the person, and long campuses often favor settling nearby. We clarify lodging and return trips before anyone meets you.
Is a single hall superintendent suitable?
Maybe, if they have coordinated several foremen and some shared plant work. We test that rather than assume. If the gap is large we will say so.
How are fees handled for a campus hire?
They follow the approved wording on this page and in your agreement. Ask us how they treat a long relocation package for a remote campus before you decide.
