Liquid Cooling Engineer for Brownfield conversions and retrofits

Data Center Headhunters recruits critical facilities, data center operations, construction and delivery, commissioning, power and cooling, and executive talent for colocation, hyperscale and enterprise sites. We research the market, contact working people and qualify a shortlist for your opening. No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

Retrofitting liquid cooling into an operating building is a different job from designing it new, because every pipe run competes with something already working.

This is what we do all day: recruit data center professionals.

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

What does this hire really come down to?

The brownfield engineer works inside existing constraints: ceiling heights, structural limits, chilled water capacity that was sized for air cooling and electrical rooms that were never meant to share a floor with coolant. Key decisions include where to place CDUs, how to route supply and return without crossing live power, and what existing plant can truly support.

The sharp question is how little they disturb. Good retrofit engineers plan isolation, temporary arrangements and rollback points, and they accept phased results instead of one clean cutover. They also tell you when a conversion is the wrong answer and a new hall would be cheaper and safer.

Compared with a new build engineer, this person spends more time surveying, testing existing valves and questioning old drawings. They coordinate with operations on maintenance windows and need to respect change control that new builds can ignore.

What do we check before you see anyone?

Ask how they verified existing chilled water capacity and what they found differed from drawings. Ask how they routed new pipework near live electrical equipment. Ask about a conversion they advised against and why. Ask how they planned temporary operation and rollback during tie-ins.

How a search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

We use executive-search discipline for technical, frontline and leadership assignments. That means understanding the work, researching the right market and holding meaningful conversations before recommending an introduction. The questions change with the assignment. A shortlist is an outcome of that judgment, not the whole service.

Infrastructure is interconnected. So is the search.
  1. 01

    Search Calibration

We agree what the person must accomplish and what they will actually own. Construction, commissioning and live operations need different questions. We clarify systems, site type, scale, decision authority, reporting lines and the team around the hire.

  2. 02

    Market Mapping

We research comparable sites, projects and teams, then consider adjacent backgrounds where the experience could transfer. A matching title is a starting point, not evidence that someone has handled the same responsibility.

  3. 03

    Professional Contact Intelligence

Contact research helps us approach relevant people appropriately. It enables the search; it is not the product. Public records can be incomplete or out of date, so employment history and responsibility remain questions to discuss and confirm where appropriate.

  4. 04

    Persistent Personalized Outreach

We explain the actual work and why the opportunity may be relevant, then follow up thoughtfully and respectfully. We listen to whether a move makes sense for that person rather than treating a response as proof of interest or fit.

  5. 05

    Live Candidate Qualification

We ask about work personally owned, decisions made and what happened when a plan went wrong. We discuss motivation and practical terms: compensation, shifts, travel, per diem where relevant, availability and authority. We distinguish the candidate's account from anything independently confirmed.

  6. 06

    Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

You receive a reasoned brief: why the person may fit, supporting examples, uncertainties and useful interview questions. We agree which credentials, references or other checks are appropriate and who will complete them. We stay involved through feedback, offer discussions and the start, rather than stopping at an introduction.

Where do we find these candidates?

We look at mechanical engineers who upgraded existing critical facilities rather than designing greenfield only. Operations engineers who supported retrofit work and understand maintenance windows are a good source. Industrial plant engineers who modified running process cooling bring similar discipline.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

  • Trusting as-built drawings without a physical survey.
  • Hiring a new build specialist and expecting retrofit patience.
  • Not asking whether the conversion is viable at all.

Questions we settle before outreach

  1. Survey the building

We ask what you know about existing plant, structure and space so we understand the true constraints.

  2. Decide the disruption limit

You tell us how much downtime or risk operations will accept, which narrows the field.

  3. Screen on a tie-in and prepare the panel

Candidates describe a live connection, its isolation and rollback. We submit those who explain details clearly. We recommend having a facility operator interview them, since they bear the consequences.

Signs of real retrofit experience

Real retrofit engineers talk about surprises. A valve that would not close, a pipe that was not on any drawing, a slab that could not take the added weight. Ask for such a story and notice whether it ends with a changed plan or with excuses. The first signals a person who will find problems before the crew does.

Ask how they sequenced work so that cooling to existing loads never dropped below what operations required. Strong candidates mention temporary capacity, agreed windows and a clear decision on who could call off the work. If they talk only about the final design, their experience is probably new build.

Honest feasibility

A useful early test is whether the candidate will tell you no. Ask for a feasibility study they wrote and what it recommended. Engineers who always find a way to say yes can cost more than those willing to say a conversion is too risky, or that only part of the building should change.

Ask also how they communicate that to a client who has already announced a program. The answer shows whether they pair candor with options.

Ask finally what they learned from a retrofit that went worse than planned. Candor about a rough project is more useful to you than a spotless record, because every conversion meets an unexpected condition eventually.

Questions

How soon can you present candidates for a retrofit liquid cooling role?

Retrofit specialists are scarce and your building constraints affect who is relevant. We describe the first review after learning about the facility.

Will they take a counteroffer?

Employers value engineers who know old buildings well and may counter strongly. We ask early about motivation and tell you if risk is high.

Is relocation realistic?

Some will move for the right project, particularly if it is long. We confirm willingness before presenting.

Will a retrofit specialist relocate for an operating building project?

Surveys and tie-ins need on-site presence, so travel can be steady during active phases. Share your per diem approach early.

What travel pattern comes with surveys and live tie-in windows?

Ask how they would plan work around your maintenance windows. A good retrofit engineer starts with your constraints rather than their design.

How do terms apply when the engineer is hired for a retrofit program?

Terms are set in your agreement before search work starts. Ask us to explain how they apply to a retrofit specialist.
