Liquid Cooling Engineer for AI Data Centers

Few people have built liquid cooling at the rack densities AI now demands, so the real hiring question is who can learn it fastest from a nearby background.

This is what we do all day: recruit data center professionals.

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

What does this hire really come down to?

A liquid cooling engineer on an AI build designs and checks the facility water loops, coolant distribution units and rack connections that carry heat away from the chips. The work crosses mechanical design, controls and field commissioning. Mistakes show up as leaks, air locks or throttled processors, and each is costly in a hall full of expensive servers.

The tradeoff is direct experience against adjacent depth. Almost nobody has years on dense liquid cooled racks. The people who have done it may have worked a handful of projects. Process cooling, semiconductor plants and high performance computing give related skills. Decide whether you will pay for a rare direct match or train a strong adjacent one.

Design and field are different people more often than owners expect. A paper designer may never have flushed a loop. A field technician may not size a pump. Know which half you lack and hire for it. Watch for overconfidence. In a field this new, the better candidates are quick to say what they have not seen. Pay attention to how they talk about operations. A design that the night shift cannot read or service is a poor design. Engineers who ask what the technicians will do at three in the morning make better choices than those who stop at the drawing.

What do we check before you see anyone?

Ask which loop designs they have worked on and which parts they personally sized or commissioned. Ask how they decide between direct-to-chip, rear door and immersion for a given density, and what limits they hit. Ask how they plan filtration, flushing and fluid quality, since contamination is a common cause of failure.

  • Ask what leak detection and response they installed and how it was tested.
  • Ask how they coordinate with the server team on connection standards and flow rates.
  • Ask about the highest rack density they supported and what failed on the way there.
  • Ask how they documented the system so operations could run it.
  • Ask what pressure and temperature limits they designed to and what margin they kept.
  • Ask how they validated a loop before connecting expensive servers, including pressure tests, flushes and flow checks.

Where do we find these candidates?

The pool includes thermal engineers from high performance computing, process cooling designers from industrial plants, semiconductor facility engineers and mechanical designers who worked on early liquid cooled halls. They move when their employer drops a program, when they want newer technology or when they see a chance to own a design standard.

  • The pool includes thermal engineers from high performance computing, process cooling designers from industrial plants, semiconductor facility engineers and mechanical designers who worked on early liquid cooled halls. Computing people know the rack side. Industrial people know fluid systems. Semiconductor engineers know cleanliness and uptime. Few know all three.
  • They move when their employer drops a program, when they want newer technology or when they see a chance to own a design standard. Some want to leave a field with slow change. Others want a lead role earlier than their current firm allows. A clear technical mandate and access to the test data often matter more than pay. Many ask whether the company owns the design standard or follows a tenant's. A role with authority over the standard attracts stronger people than one that only implements it.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

  • Insisting on direct liquid experience and leaving the seat empty while adjacent candidates with strong fluid skills go elsewhere.
  • Hiring a designer without a field partner who has flushed and commissioned a loop.
  • Skipping a conversation about fluid quality and filtration until the first contamination event.

Questions we settle before outreach

  1. Define the cooling approach

We ask which methods you plan, what density you target and which parts are already designed.

  2. Pick design or field first

We help you decide which half is missing and what adjacent backgrounds you will accept.

  3. Test fluid judgment

We ask candidates about filtration, flushing and failure causes, and we separate real field memory from reading.

Questions

How adjacent can a candidate be before the risk is too high?

Fluid system design and commissioning experience at scale is the minimum. Without it, a candidate is learning two things at once.

Do we need a design engineer or a commissioning engineer first?

If the design is fixed, hire commissioning. If it is open, hire design and bring a field partner.

How should we treat a candidate who wants to stay remote?

Liquid work needs time in the hall during commissioning. Say how much on site time you require.

What should we ask about immersion systems?

Ask what fluids they handled and how they managed servicing. Immersion has its own habits, and few have deep time in it.

Is a patent or published paper a useful signal?

Only if the candidate can explain what was built. Ask what changed in the field because of it.

How should we compare a design engineer from a computing center with one from industrial cooling?

The computing engineer knows rack demands and the industrial engineer knows fluid systems. Test each on the side they have not worked, and choose the one who answers with curiosity, not defense.
