Data Center Operations Manager for Enterprise and financial services data centers

Data Center Headhunters recruits critical facilities, data center operations, construction and delivery, commissioning, power and cooling, and executive talent for colocation, hyperscale and enterprise sites. We research the market, contact working people and qualify a shortlist for your opening. No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

An enterprise or financial services operations manager serves one owner whose applications cannot stop, and whose auditors ask for evidence. The hire needs to run a quiet floor with rigorous change control and defensible records.

This is what we do all day: recruit data center professionals.

What does this hire really come down to?

Authority is tied to change control. The manager often chairs or sits on the change board, decides whether a maintenance activity proceeds and signs off access exceptions. Ask for a change they declined and what the business said. Supervision covers technicians, contractors and sometimes security and mailroom staff.

Work permitted is tightly specified, with named approvers and logged procedures. A candidate should explain how they proved that the correct people did the correct work.

Compared with a colocation manager, there is one customer, deeper regulatory expectations and a slower pace of change. Compared with the facilities manager, this person manages floor operations rather than plant strategy. Check that the career history matches.

What do we check before you see anyone?

  • Ask what evidence they gave during an audit, such as access logs, maintenance records and procedure reviews.
  • Probe on disaster recovery testing: who coordinated it and what failed.
  • Test their handling of a request from a senior executive that bypasses the change process.

How a search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

We use executive-search discipline for technical, frontline and leadership assignments. That means understanding the work, researching the right market and holding meaningful conversations before recommending an introduction. The questions change with the assignment. A shortlist is an outcome of that judgment, not the whole service.

Infrastructure is interconnected. So is the search.
  1. 01

    Search Calibration

We agree what the person must accomplish and what they will actually own. Construction, commissioning and live operations need different questions. We clarify systems, site type, scale, decision authority, reporting lines and the team around the hire.

  2. 02

    Market Mapping

We research comparable sites, projects and teams, then consider adjacent backgrounds where the experience could transfer. A matching title is a starting point, not evidence that someone has handled the same responsibility.

  3. 03

    Professional Contact Intelligence

Contact research helps us approach relevant people appropriately. It enables the search; it is not the product. Public records can be incomplete or out of date, so employment history and responsibility remain questions to discuss and confirm where appropriate.

  4. 04

    Persistent Personalized Outreach

We explain the actual work and why the opportunity may be relevant, then follow up thoughtfully and respectfully. We listen to whether a move makes sense for that person rather than treating a response as proof of interest or fit.

  5. 05

    Live Candidate Qualification

We ask about work personally owned, decisions made and what happened when a plan went wrong. We discuss motivation and practical terms: compensation, shifts, travel, per diem where relevant, availability and authority. We distinguish the candidate's account from anything independently confirmed.

  6. 06

    Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

You receive a reasoned brief: why the person may fit, supporting examples, uncertainties and useful interview questions. We agree which credentials, references or other checks are appropriate and who will complete them. We stay involved through feedback, offer discussions and the start, rather than stopping at an introduction.

Where do we find these candidates?

Look at banks, insurers, healthcare systems and large corporates that run their own sites, along with outsourced providers who served them. Government and defence facilities bring similar discipline. Colocation managers can move across, but may need to adjust to a single stakeholder with higher expectation of formality.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

  • Hiring a fast moving operator who dislikes documentation.
  • Neglecting to ask about audit findings and how they were closed.
  • Overlooking the political skill needed to deal with application teams.

Questions we settle before outreach

  1. State regulatory expectations

Say which audits and standards apply, so candidates can speak to real experience.

  2. Share the change process

Describe how changes are approved and who can override.

  3. Ask for a record sample and meet the business owner

Request an anonymised example of a maintenance record they maintained. Give them time with a senior stakeholder.

Evidence culture

Financial services sites live on records. Ask how long they keep access logs, who reviews them and what a reviewer would flag. A weak answer suggests audits were handled by someone else.

Ask how they prepare for an unannounced inspection and who they brief beforehand.

Dealing with application owners

Application teams want change windows that suit trading calendars or quarter-end close, not the maintenance plan. The manager must negotiate without conceding safety.

Ask for a time a business owner pushed back on a window and how the disagreement ended. Notice whether the candidate was patient or simply deferred.

Contractor control

Enterprise sites often rely on a few trusted vendors. Ask how the candidate vets new contractors, checks qualifications for electrical tasks under the employer's own safety programme and escorts visitors.

Disaster recovery and failover days

Planned failover tests are where an operations manager earns trust. Ask how they prepared the floor, who was on site, what they pre-staged and how they judged the test afterwards.

A test that passed on paper but frightened everyone needs a different follow-up than one that revealed a real weakness. Candidates who describe both honestly are worth more than those who report only success.

Where the role ends

The enterprise manager rarely owns the electrical distribution design. If they claim to, ask which engineer reviewed it and what the review changed.

Questions

How soon could an enterprise operations manager shortlist be ready?

We need to know your audit regime and location first, since regulated experience narrows the pool. A date comes after that, not before.

Will a bank or insurer counter when a manager resigns?

Frequently, because continuity matters in regulated work. We ask candidates whether the reasons for leaving are about pay or about the work itself.

Will candidates relocate to a financial centre?

Some will, mainly for a larger floor or a clearer path, and others want to stay near family. Hybrid starts or relocation help widen the group.

How much travel is typical for this manager?

Mostly to a recovery site for failover tests and the occasional vendor review. State the pattern so candidates can plan around it.

How do we judge fit with a formal culture?

Ask how much process you expect and where you accept risk. A good candidate speaks comfortably about both and can show a record they kept.

What do we need to know about fees?

The signed engagement document governs them, and we explain each point before introductions. Ask about any case you are unsure of.
