Commissioning Manager for Commissioning and electrical testing firms

Data Center Headhunters recruits critical facilities, data center operations, construction and delivery, commissioning, power and cooling, and executive talent for colocation, hyperscale and enterprise sites. We research the market, contact working people and qualify a shortlist for your opening. No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

A commissioning manager inside a commissioning or electrical testing firm runs a business unit, not just a project. They staff crews across several client sites, keep test instruments calibrated and certified, sign off reports that carry the firm's name, and decide which jobs the firm can safely take.

This is what we do all day: recruit data center professionals.

What does this hire really come down to?

The decision rights differ from an owner side or contractor side manager. This person sets crew assignments, approves the firm's test procedures, and signs reports, but the client still holds the design and the acceptance decision. Supervision means technicians and engineers they do not see every day.

The manager has to judge whether a field lead's data is trustworthy from a report, a photo set and a short phone call.

Compared with a senior project commissioning role, the step up is accountability for utilisation, quality control and liability exposure across many jobs at once.

What do we check before you see anyone?

Ask how they decide a job is out of the firm's depth, and what they did the last time they declined work or brought in a partner. Have them describe their review process for a test report before it leaves the building, including what makes them send one back to the field.

  • Verify how they handled technician certification, such as NETA status where relevant, and who actually performs which tests under the firm's accreditation.

How a search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

We use executive-search discipline for technical, frontline and leadership assignments. That means understanding the work, researching the right market and holding meaningful conversations before recommending an introduction. The questions change with the assignment. A shortlist is an outcome of that judgment, not the whole service.

Infrastructure is interconnected. So is the search.
  1. 01

    Search Calibration

We agree what the person must accomplish and what they will actually own. Construction, commissioning and live operations need different questions. We clarify systems, site type, scale, decision authority, reporting lines and the team around the hire.

  2. 02

    Market Mapping

We research comparable sites, projects and teams, then consider adjacent backgrounds where the experience could transfer. A matching title is a starting point, not evidence that someone has handled the same responsibility.

  3. 03

    Professional Contact Intelligence

Contact research helps us approach relevant people appropriately. It enables the search; it is not the product. Public records can be incomplete or out of date, so employment history and responsibility remain questions to discuss and confirm where appropriate.

  4. 04

    Persistent Personalized Outreach

We explain the actual work and why the opportunity may be relevant, then follow up thoughtfully and respectfully. We listen to whether a move makes sense for that person rather than treating a response as proof of interest or fit.

  5. 05

    Live Candidate Qualification

We ask about work personally owned, decisions made and what happened when a plan went wrong. We discuss motivation and practical terms: compensation, shifts, travel, per diem where relevant, availability and authority. We distinguish the candidate's account from anything independently confirmed.

  6. 06

    Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

You receive a reasoned brief: why the person may fit, supporting examples, uncertainties and useful interview questions. We agree which credentials, references or other checks are appropriate and who will complete them. We stay involved through feedback, offer discussions and the start, rather than stopping at an introduction.

Where do we find these candidates?

  • Independent electrical testing companies whose managers learned to balance field crews with instrument calibration, report review and client communication.
  • Commissioning providers on the mechanical side who have grown into multi-discipline coordination.
  • Contractor commissioning leads who want a firm side role with less pressure to hold a construction schedule.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

Do not promote the best field technician into management without testing for scheduling, margin or conflict skills. Do not hire from owner or contractor roles and assume they understand how a testing firm earns and protects its reputation. Do not skip a conversation about liability.

  • Promoting the best field technician into management without testing for scheduling, margin or conflict skills.
  • Hiring from owner or contractor roles and assuming they understand how a testing firm earns and protects its reputation.
  • Skipping a conversation about liability. A manager who has never said no to a client will say yes to the wrong job.

Questions we settle before outreach

  1. Clarify the firm's scope

We learn which systems you test, which clients you serve and where capacity is stretched.

  2. Separate technical and commercial needs and probe real management

You choose whether this hire leads technicians, grows accounts or both, so we screen for the right mix. Conversations cover staffing decisions, quality escapes and client pushback they have handled.

  3. Deliver a short list

We present candidates with clear notes on span of control and any gaps against your service lines.

Where the hire sits in the business

A firm side manager is judged by what leaves the building. Ask to hear how their review catches a mislabelled test result, a copied template or a field lead who rounds numbers. Candidates who have only reviewed their own reports tend to be weak here.

Ask about utilisation as well. A manager who cannot explain how they balance idle technician time against rush work will struggle with the commercial half of the role.

Accreditation in plain terms

If your firm sells NETA acceptance testing, confirm what the candidate's own status means. NETA certifies technicians employed by accredited companies, so ask who held which level on the jobs they list and who actually ran each test.

Questions

How early can we see managers who have run testing crews?

It varies with how specialised your service mix is and how firmly you want someone who has run field crews. We will explain what we see in the market after intake, but we will not quote a number of days.

Could a manager's current firm keep them with a counteroffer?

Possibly, because firms of this size often rely on a single manager. We ask candidates early what is missing in their current seat so a raise does not erase the reason they looked.

Will a manager from another region take a seat at our office?

Managers with school-age children or a spouse's career often decline moves, so ask yourself whether a hybrid arrangement is acceptable. A fixed office with no flexibility narrows the field.

How much site travel does a testing firm manager normally do?

Visits to crews and client sites vary by contract mix, so describe a typical month before candidates ask. People who have supervised distributed crews expect to know the overnight pattern.

What shows that a manager will fit a small testing business?

Ask how they handled a client dispute over a failed test, and who they involved. A manager who escalates well fits better than one who either avoids conflict or takes on every fight.

What commercial terms should we have ready for this hire?

The fee basis is set out in writing before the search begins. If you are considering a partner or equity conversation with the hire, tell us early so the commercial terms are discussed together.
