Commissioning Manager for AI / HPC high-density and liquid cooling builds
On an AI or high density project the commissioning manager runs a schedule that is squeezed from both ends: equipment arrives late and the customer wants racks energised early. You need someone who can sequence liquid cooling, power and controls testing, and protect the integrated test from being traded away.
This is what we do all day: recruit data center professionals.

What does this hire really come down to?
The manager owns the commissioning plan, the level by level sequence and the issue closure process. They do not design the plant, direct the trades or accept the facility for the owner, though they advise on all three. Their team is agents, discipline engineers and vendor start-up technicians.
They need to read a cooling loop schedule and a power one-line with equal confidence, or at least know when to hand a question to a specialist.
Compared with a lead commissioning agent, the manager adds responsibility for tradeoffs: which tests can run in parallel, which must wait, and what compressing them costs.
What do we check before you see anyone?
Ask them to describe how they would sequence loop flushing, pump verification, power energisation and integrated load testing on a hall that must hand over in phases. Request an account of a time the schedule pushed to cut a test.

How we help you hire
- 01
Tell us who you need
Tell us about the role, experience, location and pay. We talk through what matters to you.
- 02
We find and speak with candidates
We approach suitable people directly, including people who are not applying to job ads.
- 03
You meet the strongest matches
We explain their background, interest in the job and our view. You decide who to interview.
- 04
We help you complete the hire
We help with feedback, the offer and start arrangements, and stay in touch as you make your decision.
Where do we find these candidates?
- Commissioning managers from hyperscale and colocation programmes where phased energisation is routine.
- Senior commissioning agents who have led integrated systems tests and are ready to run the team around them.
- Mechanical or electrical project engineers who moved into commissioning leadership and kept authority over the test sequence.
Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?
Do not hire on hyperscale pedigree alone when the liquid side is new to them and no one on the team can fill that gap. Do not ask the manager to absorb schedule risk silently instead of agreeing in advance which tests are non negotiable.

- Confusing a manager with a coordinator who tracks issues but cannot judge whether a fix is adequate.
Questions we settle before outreach
- Frame the programme
We learn the hall count, the cooling approach, the energisation phases and who already owns the test plan.
- Decide the technical centre of gravity and test sequencing judgment
You tell us whether the manager must lead on power, cooling or both. We probe how they build and defend a plan under compression.
- Present candidates
You receive a short list with notes on work, phase experience and what each would need from your team.
What compression looks like in practice
On AI work the owner often wants the first hall energised while later halls are still being built. Ask how the candidate would protect the integrated systems test when the commercial case says to skip it for hall two because hall one passed.
Good answers distinguish between risks the first hall retired and risks specific to the second, such as different equipment lots or a different controls version. Poor answers either say no to everything or agree to everything.
Handover and operations
The manager's last job is to leave the operating team with a facility they can run. Ask what training sessions, failure demonstrations and open issue lists they handed over, and who accepted them.
Vendor start-up versus independent test
Ask how they keep a vendor's factory trained start-up separate from the independent witness. If the same person signs both, the manager has not kept the commissioning team independent.

Questions
How early can we expect managers who have run liquid cooled halls?
It depends on how specific your cooling and phasing needs are, and we will give you a realistic read at intake rather than a promise. A narrow brief usually means fewer but better matched names.
What if a manager is mid-programme and their company counters?
Very likely if they are close to handover on a live project. We ask early how they would exit and propose a start date that avoids leaving their current team exposed.
Will managers relocate to a programme away from a major city?
Programmes in remote regions rarely suit those with fixed family ties. Say whether lodging, a relocation payment or a rotation is on offer before we write to anyone.
Should the manager be resident on site or rotate for an AI build?
Site residence suits a manager who sequences daily work, while rotation suits someone covering several halls. Tell us which you prefer, as candidates are firm about which they will accept.
How do we test whether a manager will work with our engineers?
Have them walk your lead engineer through a past issue log and explain closure decisions. Fit is visible in how they treat technical disagreement.
What should we settle about the hire before candidates are contacted?
Fees are confirmed in writing before we start work and do not shift while the search runs. If your programme needs several commissioning leads, raise that now because we can discuss it as one engagement.

What should you know before you send a role?
What does it cost to hire through Data Center Headhunters?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. Fee terms are set out in the signed recruiting agreement.
How long until I see a short list?
We discuss timing once we know the role and location. We keep you updated rather than promising a date before the search starts.
How do you handle counteroffers?
We talk about why the person wants to move and whether they might stay. If that changes, we let you know.
Is there a guarantee?
We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.
What don't you do?
We do not post your job on boards, send stacks of unscreened resumes or charge an upfront fee. We do not approach candidates for your search before the brief is agreed with you.
