Commissioning Agent (CxA) for Hyperscale campus builds (multi-building, phased)

On a phased hyperscale campus the commissioning agent does not finish and leave. They carry lessons from one building into the next and keep the test standard from drifting.

This is what we do all day: recruit data center professionals.

What does this hire really come down to?

A multi-building campus means the same systems are commissioned again and again, with design changes between phases. The agent keeps a consistent script library, tracks lessons, and decides which tests can be reused and which need revision. Their value grows across phases because they know what failed last time.

Phasing also overlaps work. One building is energized and under test while the next is under construction, and the owner may already have equipment live in an earlier hall. The agent must protect the live space and still keep the new building on schedule. That is a different pressure than a single standalone facility.

Scale changes the team. The agent may lead several commissioning engineers and coordinate with owner operations staff who will take over each building. Ask whether the seat leads people or works hands-on, because campus agents often do both.

What do we check before you see anyone?

  • Ask what they changed between a first and second building and why.
  • Ask how they protected an energized hall while the next one was tested.
  • Ask how they handed over each building to operations staff.

Tell us who you need

Where do we find these candidates?

  • We search commissioning firms with campus portfolios, owner program teams and large mechanical and electrical contractors.
  • Agents who have followed a single owner through repeated builds can fit if their role was real.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

  • Hiring someone who has only done one-off buildings.
  • Letting each phase restart its test scripts.
  • Neglecting handover to operations.

Questions we settle before outreach

  1. Describe the phases

We ask how many buildings, how they overlap and which are live.

  2. Define team work

We confirm whether the agent leads engineers.

  3. Interview on repetition

We bring you people who can describe lessons carried between phases.

What repetition demands from the agent

A campus script library is a living asset. The agent must decide what carries from building one to building two, and what changes because equipment, controls or the owner's operating plan has changed. Reusing a stale script is as dangerous as rewriting everything.

Ask how they record lessons. Useful answers include a defect log sorted by system, a short design feedback list for the engineer and a record of which vendor start-up problems recurred.

Live adjacency is the other difference. When an energized hall sits near a building under test, the agent coordinates access, shared infrastructure and outage windows with the owner's operations team. Ask how they made those requests and who approved them.

Ask also about people. A campus agent usually trains new commissioning engineers while the program continues, so teaching ability matters. Someone who guards knowledge will slow you down by the third building.

Handover between phases and teams

At the end of each building, operations staff inherit the systems, the scripts and the open issues. Ask the candidate how they prepared those staff, what they walked them through, and what they kept open for the next building.

Ask what documents they would expect to find at the start of building three, and what they would be worried not to find there.

Finally, clarify how the agent works with the design engineer when repeated findings point to a drawing change, because phased design updates are where campuses either improve or repeat mistakes.

Staying sharp over years

Campus programs can run for years, and attention fades by the later buildings. Ask how the candidate keeps checking things they have seen pass many times, and what prompted the last script change they made in a late phase.

Ask whether they stayed on one program for a long period. Staying power is a real trait here, and it shows in how clearly they remember specific systems.

Questions

How soon can you show me campus commissioning agents?

It depends on the campus scale and region, and we do not promise a date. We will describe the market candidly.

Will campus agents take counteroffers?

We talk about why the person wants to move and whether they might stay. If that changes, we let you know.

Will they relocate near the campus?

Often yes for a long program, as campuses run for years. Offer housing support where you can.

How are travel and per diem handled for remote campuses?

Remote sites usually need lodging support and a daily allowance. State terms before interviews.

How do I know a campus agent fits us?

Check their record across repeated phases and live-site work. One-off experience may not be enough.

Does a campus that runs for years change the pay conversation?

It does, because candidates will ask about retention terms across phases, not just the first building. Share the range and any commitment you can make to the full program duration.
