Chief Engineer, Data Center for AI / GPU cloud providers (neoclouds)

Data Center Headhunters recruits critical facilities, data center operations, construction and delivery, commissioning, power and cooling, and executive talent for colocation, hyperscale and enterprise sites. We research the market, contact working people and qualify a shortlist for your opening. No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

A neocloud chief engineer inherits halls that are filling with dense GPU racks, often faster than the plant was first sized for. You need someone who can operate under pressure, challenge unrealistic deployment dates and understand liquid cooling as a live system.

This is what we do all day: recruit data center professionals.

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

What does this hire really come down to?

Authority here centres on thermal and electrical limits. The chief should be able to say how many racks a hall can accept before cooling or power is exposed, and be heard when sales commitments run ahead. Ask for a time they held a deployment back and what the pushback sounded like.

Supervision covers technicians who may be new to direct liquid cooling, coolant distribution units and high density power. The chief is accountable for procedures that did not exist at older sites. Candidates should describe writing or revising a procedure for fluid handling, not just following one.

Compared with a traditional enterprise chief, the pace and the density differ, and the supply chain for spares is tighter. Compared with a construction side lead, the chief runs the site after turnover and must live with its design compromises. Check which experience dominates.

What do we check before you see anyone?

  • Ask about their direct experience with liquid cooling: loop commissioning, leak response and coolant quality checks.
  • Probe how they would manage a hall where the build team is still finishing while customers are already running training workloads.
  • Test power quality understanding. How do large load swings affect generators, UPS systems and upstream protection?

How a search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

We use executive-search discipline for technical, frontline and leadership assignments. That means understanding the work, researching the right market and holding meaningful conversations before recommending an introduction. The questions change with the assignment. A shortlist is an outcome of that judgment, not the whole service.

Infrastructure is interconnected. So is the search.
  1. 01

    Search Calibration

We agree what the person must accomplish and what they will actually own. Construction, commissioning and live operations need different questions. We clarify systems, site type, scale, decision authority, reporting lines and the team around the hire.

  2. 02

    Market Mapping

We research comparable sites, projects and teams, then consider adjacent backgrounds where the experience could transfer. A matching title is a starting point, not evidence that someone has handled the same responsibility.

  3. 03

    Professional Contact Intelligence

Contact research helps us approach relevant people appropriately. It enables the search; it is not the product. Public records can be incomplete or out of date, so employment history and responsibility remain questions to discuss and confirm where appropriate.

  4. 04

    Persistent Personalized Outreach

We explain the actual work and why the opportunity may be relevant, then follow up thoughtfully and respectfully. We listen to whether a move makes sense for that person rather than treating a response as proof of interest or fit.

  5. 05

    Live Candidate Qualification

We ask about work personally owned, decisions made and what happened when a plan went wrong. We discuss motivation and practical terms: compensation, shifts, travel, per diem where relevant, availability and authority. We distinguish the candidate's account from anything independently confirmed.

  6. 06

    Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

You receive a reasoned brief: why the person may fit, supporting examples, uncertainties and useful interview questions. We agree which credentials, references or other checks are appropriate and who will complete them. We stay involved through feedback, offer discussions and the start, rather than stopping at an introduction.

Where do we find these candidates?

  • Look at hyperscale and high performance computing operators, plus colocation sites that have already hosted dense deployments. Candidates from supercomputing facilities can be strong on liquid systems.
  • Commissioning and construction leads can step across, but confirm they have operated a live hall through failure and not only handed one over.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

Do not treat liquid cooling as a checkbox instead of asking what actually failed and how it was fixed. Do not hire for air cooled experience alone because it is easier to find. Do not ignore the culture of rapid change.

  • Treating liquid cooling as a checkbox instead of asking what actually failed and how it was fixed.
  • Hiring for air cooled experience alone because it is easier to find.
  • Ignoring the culture of rapid change. A chief who needs long approval cycles may struggle.

Questions we settle before outreach

  1. Describe the density and cooling design

Give candidates the hall type, so they can speak to real experience.

  2. Decide on the deployment authority

State who can slow a customer rollout and on what grounds.

  3. Run a cooling failure scenario and review procedures

Ask how they would triage a coolant loop alarm during active workloads. Request a sample of a procedure they authored, with sensitive details removed.

What differs on a GPU floor

Load profile is the first change. Training jobs start and stop together, so electrical demand can swing sharply and stress generators and protection settings. A chief who has only seen steady enterprise loads may not recognise the symptoms.

Spares are the second change. Pumps, hoses, quick disconnects and coolant stock may have long lead times, so the candidate should talk about holding critical spares and who approves the spend.

Adjacent experience to weigh

Supercomputing and research computing sites have run liquid cooling for years and often have strong chemistry and leak discipline. They may not have faced commercial uptime commitments to paying customers.

Hyperscale operators bring scale and rigour, but their roles can be narrow. Ask how much of the whole plant the person actually saw.

Commissioning handover

New halls often arrive with open punch items. Ask how the candidate decides which defects block customer load and which can wait.

Questions

How realistic is a quick shortlist for a neocloud chief?

The group with direct liquid cooling and dense load experience is small. We will describe how small after the first round of conversations, instead of promising a date.

Will competing operators counter with equity or retention pay?

They often try, since talent for dense halls is scarce. We ask candidates what would genuinely hold them and whether a counter would reopen the same reasons for leaving.

Will candidates move to a remote GPU campus?

Many will for authority over a new build, but isolation and schools are real obstacles. Tell us what housing or rotation arrangements you can offer.

How much time on the road does the chief role need?

New site start-ups, coolant and pump vendor visits and customer reviews can pull a chief away. Put the pattern and the expense rules in writing before first interviews.

How do we test fit for a company that changes plans weekly?

Ask for a time a requirement changed after procurement and what the candidate did. Good answers show orderly adjustment and a willingness to hold back racks when thermal limits say so.

What should we ask about fees?

The signed engagement sets the terms and we review it with you before introductions. Raise any unusual structure, such as phased hiring across halls, in that conversation.
