What does this hire really come down to?

Temporary power is a distinct craft. The electrician sets up the service from the utility, distribution panels, spider boxes, ground-fault protection, cord and cable routing, and temporary lighting for work areas and stairwells. The work changes weekly as trades move, which means the electrician is often adding circuits at the request of a foreman who does not know the load.

Ask how the person decided to say no. Good temp power electricians tell people when a circuit is overloaded, and keep a clear record of what feeds what. The job is not the same as a permanent installation electrician's work or a generator operator's. A temporary power electrician may also manage generators and fuel, but not always. Some sites assign that to a separate operator. Also ask whether the person was responsible for inspections and testing of cords and ground-fault devices, because on many sites that routine falls to the temp power person alone. Authority often extends to restricting power to a trade that has violated rules.

What do we check before you see anyone?

Ask for the largest temporary service they have built, in terms of the type of equipment and the number of trades relying on it, not an invented figure. Ground-fault protection routine. Ask how often devices were tested and what the electrician did when one failed.

  • Ask for the largest temporary service they have built, in terms of the type of equipment and the number of trades relying on it, not an invented figure.
  • How they track circuits: who they tell when a panel is added or moved, and what drawings or logs they keep.
  • Ground-fault protection routine. Ask how often devices were tested and what the electrician did when one failed.
  • Qualification for energized work. Confirm what tasks the employer authorized under NFPA 70E, and the status of their journeyman license in your jurisdiction.

Where do we find these candidates?

We search among commercial and industrial electricians who have served as the site electrician on large builds, and among those with temporary power company experience at events and infrastructure projects. Maintenance electricians from plants can also fit, though they sometimes miss the pace of changing demands on a construction site.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

Do not hire a general electrician and then discover they dislike constant interruptions. Give them authority to refuse trade requests that would overload a panel. And remember that temporary lighting is also an inspection item, so the person must keep it compliant as the building changes around it.

Your search in 3 steps

  1. Describe the site

Tell us the phases, trades on site and whether generators are involved.

  2. Probe the saying no

We ask candidates how they handled requests they could not safely meet.

  3. Confirm records

We check what logs and test records the person has kept.

What the work looks like day to day

Expect a morning of walking the site, checking cords, panels and lighting for damage left by other trades, then a list of requests from foremen who want power in new areas. The electrician fits those requests into available capacity, adds circuits where safe and sometimes relocates service as walls and slabs change. On a live-adjacent site, the same person may need to keep temporary feeds away from permanent equipment being energized. Ask candidates how they planned relocations, because every move is a chance to miss a connection.

Authority and records

Decide before hiring who may shut off a trade's power for misuse. Candidates who have held that authority will tell you how they handled the argument afterward. Those who never had it may be perfectly capable but will need your backing. Also settle who owns the generator fuel log, since an electrician who is unexpectedly handed it often resents the added chore.

Questions

How soon can we expect temp power electricians to be shortlisted?

We do not promise a time, because availability changes with active projects. A clear picture of site phases helps. Many of these electricians are between jobs, which can move conversations faster.

Will temp power electricians get counteroffers?

It happens when a site electrician is trusted by a general contractor. We ask whether the current site is wrapping up, because that affects their interest. We pass you what they say.

Will a site electrician move to our area for a temporary power role?

Many follow construction work and will move for a phase that lasts long enough to justify it. We discuss how long your temporary service will be needed and whether you help with lodging. Short, uncertain phases suit travelers better than people with local ties.

How does per diem work for this role?

The terms depend on your project and any agreement, and we ask for them early. Electricians who have worked temp power on remote sites will ask about days off and lodging. Be clear about both.

How do we judge fit for our site?

Ask them to describe how they would respond to a trade asking for more power than a panel can supply. Strong answers include a plan and who they would inform. Fit is about judgment more than speed.

Would a short-term contract electrician be cheaper than a direct temp power hire?

It can be, if the phase is brief and the electrician will not need to learn your site. We will describe both routes for your phase and agree written terms before anyone is introduced. You choose after seeing the comparison.
