What does this hire really come down to?

Carpentry is several trades under one name. Form carpenters build the molds that shape slabs, walls and equipment pads. Framers build interior walls, partitions and ceilings. Finish carpenters handle trim and doors. Data center work leans on formwork for heavy equipment pads and framing for white space partitions, and few people are equally strong at both.

Tolerance is the hinge. A generator pad or a battery room floor must be flat and located correctly, because equipment is heavy and unforgiving. A form carpenter who tolerates a small error in a wall form can create a large problem for the concrete crew and the equipment installers. Ask how the candidate checks their work and who they report it to.

The leader levels differ too. A journeyman carpenter works from layout given to them. A foreman lays out and assigns work. Do not hire a skilled hand and expect layout authority. Also separate this from the drywall and metal stud trades, which may be a different contractor on your site.

What do we check before you see anyone?

Which forms they have built, including wall, slab edge and equipment pad work. Ask what they used for bracing and how they checked plumb. Whether they read structural drawings and set embeds and sleeves. Embeds that miss location are expensive.

  • Which forms they have built, including wall, slab edge and equipment pad work. Ask what they used for bracing and how they checked plumb.
  • Whether they read structural drawings and set embeds and sleeves. Embeds that miss location are expensive.
  • Layout skill: ask how they use a level, a laser and a tape to establish lines from control points.
  • Safety on elevated forms and edges, including fall protection habits.

Where do we find these candidates?

Union carpenter locals and commercial concrete contractors supply form carpenters used to heavy work. Tilt up and precast crews know large format wall work, a useful match for data center shells. Interior framers from commercial tenant fit outs bring good detail but may lack structural formwork experience.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

Do not name for a carpenter without saying form or interior. The applicants will not match. Do not ignore tolerance. Equipment pads and sleeves reward precision. Do not assume journeyman can lay out the whole job. Layout is a separate responsibility.

Your search in 3 steps

  1. Choose formwork or framing

We clarify the scope and which tolerances matter for your work.

  2. Screen on layout and checks

Candidates describe the forms or walls they built and how they verified them.

  3. Check coordination habits and provide a short list

We ask how they work with concrete, steel and mechanical trades on embeds. You get names grouped by form or framing strength with notes on layout.

What changes at each level

An apprentice cuts and builds under instruction. A journeyman carpenter reads drawings, sets forms or frames walls and checks their own work against layout lines. A foreman organizes the crew and the sequence and answers for the quality. If you ask a journeyman to take on foreman duties without saying so, the work will drift.

Be honest about layout. If control points and benchmarks will be provided by a surveyor, say so, and look for a carpenter comfortable working from them.

Ask also about material handling, since form lumber, plywood and steel studs all arrive in awkward quantities and the carpenter often decides where they are staged.

Handoffs to watch

Formwork passes to rebar and then to concrete, and each handoff needs an inspection. Interior framing passes to electrical and mechanical rough in, and blocking for racks and equipment must be placed before walls close. Ask what the candidate does to confirm that blocking, embeds and openings are right, and who they tell when something is wrong.

What does BLS publish for this role?

The figure below comes from the national OEWS row for Carpenters. Read the mapping badge before using it in a budget. A broader occupation can include jobs outside data centers. Compare your seat’s responsibilities and pay basis with the published occupation rather than treating the median as an offer quote.

Closest proxy. Carpenters is the closest occupational proxy based on the work described, not a separate data center wage series. BLS does not distinguish this title, experience level, shift, credentials or data center employers. Confirm the actual duties before using this comparison.

Questions

How quickly can formwork carpenters for equipment pads be found compared with interior framers?

Form carpenters with heavy pad experience are fewer than interior framers. State which you need and we will say early which side looks thin.

A carpenter we like has a counteroffer from a concrete contractor with steady backlog. What should we weigh?

Ask what the home contractor cannot offer him, such as layout responsibility or longer work. Without a real reason he will likely stay.

Is moving worthwhile for a carpenter on a short slab and wall package?

Not usually, so plan for a local carpenter or a traveler. Relocation makes sense only for a long shell and fit out sequence.

What do travelers expect when they build forms or frame walls away from home?

They expect a daily amount, lodging and a defined workweek, plus clear tool rules. Say whether you provide forming hardware and lasers so they pack correctly.

What task would show us whether a carpenter can hold tolerance on a generator pad?

Ask him to describe how he squares and levels a pad form and who checks it before the pour. A good answer includes control points, bracing and a sign off.

How should we think about fees for a carpenter hired as a layout lead?

A lead who lays out the work is a narrower search than a journeyman. Tell us the layout expectation and we will explain how the agreed terms apply.

How a search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

Every search runs the same six steps. We agree the brief with you, map where the people work, find direct contact routes, reach out personally and repeatedly, then qualify each candidate live. You only see a short list of people who fit, with notes on each, and we stay with you through offer and start.

  1. 01

    Search Calibration

You get: A written brief you sign off on: scope, must-haves, pay band and who not to approach.

  2. 02

    Market Mapping

You get: A map of the companies and projects where your future hire is working today.

  3. 03

    Professional Contact Intelligence

You get: Verified direct contact routes to the people on that map, not job board replies.

  4. 04

    Persistent Personalized Outreach

You get: Repeated, role-specific outreach to people who are not looking, in your words.

  5. 05

    Live Candidate Qualification

You get: Each candidate is screened live against your brief before you hear their name.

  6. 06

    Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

You get: A short list with candidate briefs, then support through interviews, offer and start.
