- VP of Design & Engineering
What does this hire really come down to?
A vice president of design and engineering owns the design process across projects: who the engineers of record are, how reviews are run, and when a change is accepted. This differs from a director, who usually leads one team or region, and from a chief technology officer, who sets the standard but does not run the design schedule.
Be explicit about which projects and which disciplines report in. Self-performing contractors, design-build firms and owner organizations use this title differently. In a contractor, the person manages in-house engineers and coordination with trade partners. At an owner, they manage outside engineering firms and hold the design intent. Someone from one side often underestimates the other's constraints.
Design decisions bring licensure questions. Professional engineers sign and seal drawings in their jurisdiction, and a vice president who is not licensed there cannot sign for work they did not supervise. Confirm who holds the stamp and what the title itself authorizes.
What do we check before you see anyone?
Ask how a change request moves from a site to a reference design and who approves it. Clear answers describe a process, not a feeling. Ask about a model conflict that reached the field and how they prevented repeats. Strong leaders discuss root cause and handoffs.
- Design standards they governed: ask how a change request moves from a site to a reference design and who approves it. Clear answers describe a process, not a feeling.
- Coordination outcomes: ask about a model conflict that reached the field and how they prevented repeats. Strong leaders discuss root cause and handoffs.
- Licensure and review authority: ask which jurisdictions they hold licenses in and what they personally sealed. Do not accept a team's licenses as theirs.
Where do we find these candidates?
We look at engineering directors from mission critical design consultancies, design-build leads from large contractors, and owner-side engineering managers. Each shows different strengths in drawings, cost and client management. Preconstruction and virtual design leaders can also move up. They need checking on direct people management and on dealing with an owner's engineering review.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?
Do not hire a brilliant engineer without management experience. The seat needs scheduling, staffing and arguing for budget. Do not ignore the contractor-owner divide. Ask for a project where the person was on the opposite side from their usual one.

- Assuming a title equals scope. One vice president runs a large department, another a handful of people.
Your search in 3 steps
- Map the design organization
We learn which disciplines, offices and projects fall under the role, and who currently signs drawings. This shapes whom we approach.
- Probe the review process
We help you structure questions around drawing reviews, change control and field conflicts. Candidates reveal their real habits.
- Settle licensure and authority
Before offer we confirm the licenses the seat needs and what the person may approve.
What changes from director level
A director of engineering normally runs one team and answers to this seat. The vice president decides how disciplines share resources, which projects get the best engineers, and when a design problem becomes a cost conversation with the owner.
Ask the candidate which director they overruled and how it worked out. It shows whether authority was used or avoided.
Where the role tends to break
Design leaders fail when they protect drawings over delivery or push schedule over coordination. Ask for a project where those pressures collided, and what they told the project manager and the owner.
Then ask how they track open design questions after construction begins. Good leaders have a system for requests for information and revisions that does not depend on memory.
Where do we fill this role?
What does BLS publish for this role?
The figure below comes from the national OEWS row for Architectural and Engineering Managers. Read the mapping badge before using it in a budget. A broader occupation can include jobs outside data centers. Compare your seat’s responsibilities and pay basis with the published occupation rather than treating the median as an offer quote.
Broader occupation. Architectural and Engineering Managers is a broader occupation based on the work described, not a separate data center wage series. BLS does not distinguish this title, experience level, shift, credentials or data center employers. Confirm the actual duties before using this comparison.

Questions
What must I settle before you can assemble candidates for this design leader?
Tell us which disciplines and offices report in and whether the person must hold a professional engineering license in a named state. Without those, we cannot separate drawing reviewers from team leaders.
The candidate's current firm is likely to match. How do you handle it?
Design leaders are often offered a larger office or partnership track. We ask what the candidate has been unable to change at the current firm, then you judge whether your seat changes it.
Do engineering vice presidents agree to relocate?
Teams and licensure tie many of them to one region, and a move can mean new state licensing. Tell us if the seat must sit in a particular office.
Will the role mean regular owner and project meetings away from the office?
Expect design reviews at sites and owner sessions. Candidates will ask who covers flights and hotel nights on long reviews.
How do I find out whether this person works well with my project managers?
Pose a case where the schedule wants an unapproved substitution and the engineer of record objects. Have your managers hear how the candidate resolves it.
What do the fee terms say about a design executive hire?
The fee and replacement language is in the agreement we send first. Ask us about any element, such as a signing bonus, you want explained.

How a search runs
How does The Six-Step Search work?
Every search runs the same six steps. We agree the brief with you, map where the people work, find direct contact routes, reach out personally and repeatedly, then qualify each candidate live. You only see a short list of people who fit, with notes on each, and we stay with you through offer and start.
- 01
Search Calibration
You get: A written brief you sign off on: scope, must-haves, pay band and who not to approach.
- 02
Market Mapping
You get: A map of the companies and projects where your future hire is working today.
- 03
Professional Contact Intelligence
You get: Verified direct contact routes to the people on that map, not job board replies.
- 04
Persistent Personalized Outreach
You get: Repeated, role-specific outreach to people who are not looking, in your words.
- 05
Live Candidate Qualification
You get: Each candidate is screened live against your brief before you hear their name.
- 06
Candidate Intelligence and Process Support
You get: A short list with candidate briefs, then support through interviews, offer and start.
What should you know before you send a role?
How long until I see a short list?
It depends on the role, the location and the market. We agree a realistic timeline with you during Search Calibration and keep you updated as the search runs.
How do you handle counteroffers?
We talk through motivation, pay and counteroffer risk with each candidate during live qualification and again before an offer, so you hear about the risk before it surprises you.
Is there a guarantee?
We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.
What don't you do?
We do not post your job on boards, send stacks of unscreened resumes or charge an upfront fee. We do not approach candidates for your search before the brief is agreed with you.
