What does this hire really come down to?

A platform chief executive owns capital allocation, site pipeline, customer concentration and the talent bench together. That differs from a chief operating officer, who executes a plan someone else set, and from a managing director of one region, who inherits the balance sheet. Start by writing down which of the decisions you want to stop making yourself.

Platforms differ in what they sell. A developer that leases powered shells needs a leader fluent in land, utility interconnection and tenant negotiation. An operator selling managed space needs someone who has lived with uptime obligations and service credits. Someone strong in one world can be visibly uncomfortable in the other.

Backers shape the seat too. A sponsor-owned platform wants an exit story, so the leader must handle diligence, reporting cadence and a board with a clock. An owner-led or family-held business wants someone who can share authority without a fight. Tell us which room this person will sit in.

What do we check before you see anyone?

Ask which land, power or financing choices were theirs, which went badly, and what they changed afterward. A person who only presented someone else's model will struggle to describe the trade. Ask whom they would phone at a utility or an anchor tenant, and why that person would pick up.

  • Capital decisions they personally made: ask which land, power or financing choices were theirs, which went badly, and what they changed afterward. A person who only presented someone else's model will struggle to describe the trade.
  • Utility and customer relationships they hold: ask whom they would phone at a utility or an anchor tenant, and why that person would pick up. Names matter less than the story of how the access was earned.
  • Who they promoted or removed: ask about the weakest executive they inherited and what happened. Platform leaders are judged on the team beneath them as much as the portfolio.

Where do we find these candidates?

We look first at senior operators from developers, colocation and hyperscale-adjacent landlords, and from large engineering and contracting groups that moved into owning assets. Each background brings a different gap, which we state plainly. Utility, power development and infrastructure investment backgrounds also produce credible candidates, particularly where interconnection is the scarce resource.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

Do not hire a deal maker for a platform that needs an operator, then wonder why delivery slips. Match the person to the next stage of the company, not the last. Do not treat a chief executive title at a small firm as equal to the same title on a funded platform.

  • Treating a chief executive title at a small firm as equal to the same title on a funded platform. Ask for the size of the balance sheet they carried.
  • Skipping reference conversations with former board members and tenants. Those two groups see what direct reports never do.

Your search in 3 steps

  1. Define the mandate

We agree whether the person is building, scaling or preparing the company for sale, and what the board will measure in the first year. That decides who belongs on the list.

  2. Test the judgment

We help you frame conversations around real decisions the candidate owned, so the interview becomes a review of choices rather than a tour of a résumé.

  3. Manage the board loop

We coordinate candidate meetings with directors and sponsors, and keep the offer conversation honest about equity, reporting lines and authority.

What changes from operating executive

A chief operating officer runs the plan. The president answers to the board for the plan itself, including where to buy land, which customers to chase and when to slow down. Ask the candidate to describe a plan they changed midway and who disagreed.

Their answer should include both the evidence and the cost of the change.

Questions

Which facts about our platform decide how fast a chief executive shortlist can form?

Candidates will only engage once they know the sponsor structure, the stage of the site pipeline and whether the seat carries board authority. Until those are written down, any list we show would mix growth builders with caretakers.

A sitting platform president is offered more equity to stay. How does that play out?

Equity offers are the usual response, and they often mask the issue that started the conversation, such as a blocked acquisition or a board disagreement. We ask what that issue was, then you can judge whether your mandate answers it better.

Will a president move to where our headquarters sits?

Executives with school-age families or vested equity near their current base often decline a full move. Spell out whether you accept a few days a week at headquarters and the rest at campus sites.

Who pays for the site, utility and investor travel this seat requires?

Candidates assume the company covers flights, lodging and a driver for utility and tenant meetings, and they will ask about aircraft policy and spouse travel. Put your policy in the offer outline so it is not a late surprise.

How do I tell whether this person suits our sponsor and not only the title?

Give them a mock disagreement between a sponsor wanting a quick exit and a utility partner needing patience. Observe whether they argue for a path or ask what each side wants.

Where can I read the fee terms before I commit to this executive search?

The fee and replacement terms are set out in the recruiting agreement we send before work starts. Ask about any clause that seems unclear for an equity-heavy offer.

How a search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

Every search runs the same six steps. We agree the brief with you, map where the people work, find direct contact routes, reach out personally and repeatedly, then qualify each candidate live. You only see a short list of people who fit, with notes on each, and we stay with you through offer and start.

  1. 01

    Search Calibration

You get: A written brief you sign off on: scope, must-haves, pay band and who not to approach.

  2. 02

    Market Mapping

You get: A map of the companies and projects where your future hire is working today.

  3. 03

    Professional Contact Intelligence

You get: Verified direct contact routes to the people on that map, not job board replies.

  4. 04

    Persistent Personalized Outreach

You get: Repeated, role-specific outreach to people who are not looking, in your words.

  5. 05

    Live Candidate Qualification

You get: Each candidate is screened live against your brief before you hear their name.

  6. 06

    Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

You get: A short list with candidate briefs, then support through interviews, offer and start.

What should you know before you send a role?

How do you handle counteroffers?

We talk through motivation, pay and counteroffer risk with each candidate during live qualification and again before an offer, so you hear about the risk before it surprises you.

Is there a guarantee?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

What don't you do?

We do not post your job on boards, send stacks of unscreened resumes or charge an upfront fee. We do not approach candidates for your search before the brief is agreed with you.
