What does this hire really come down to?

A traveling commissioning engineer does the work of the electrical or mechanical commissioning engineer, but the site changes. Each arrival means a new owner, a new commissioning agent, a new test procedure format and a new set of installers who have never met them.

The skill that separates strong travelers from adequate ones is how fast they find the real state of the equipment: what is energized, what is only mechanically complete, and which punch items will block a test. The commissioning firm usually rotates engineers as projects reach testing, so the job is tied to a schedule you do not control. Dates slip, a site goes quiet for weeks, then three start at once. Ask yourself whether you need someone to stay through one full program or to cover a specific push. Those are different people, and the second kind often prefers to be told plainly that the end date is soft.

What do we check before you see anyone?

Have them explain what they do when the script on site is wrong, who they call, and what they write down before changing anything. What they did at integrated testing versus component level. Someone who only ran individual equipment tests has not yet seen a full failure scenario with the owner watching.

  • Which discipline they actually tested: switchgear, generators, UPS and load banks on the electrical side, or chillers, pumps and controls on the mechanical side. Ask them to describe one functional test from the first step to the signed record.
  • How they handle an unfamiliar procedure: have them explain what they do when the script on site is wrong, who they call, and what they write down before changing anything.
  • What they did at integrated testing versus component level. Someone who only ran individual equipment tests has not yet seen a full failure scenario with the owner watching.
  • Travel pattern in plain terms: the length of their usual assignments, how they handle the home gap, and whether they hold a valid license to drive and rent without restriction.

Where do we find these candidates?

Travelers come from commissioning firms that already rotate engineers, from electrical and mechanical contractors whose startup teams follow equipment to site, and from manufacturer field service groups where startup work is the daily job. A few come from owner operations teams and have tested on a live floor.

  • Travelers come from commissioning firms that already rotate engineers, from electrical and mechanical contractors whose startup teams follow equipment to site, and from manufacturer field service groups where startup work is the daily job. A few come from owner operations teams and have tested on a live floor. Contractor startup backgrounds tend to know equipment deeply but less about owner witness practice, so test that edge specifically.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

Do not treat travel willingness as the main qualification. Plenty of people will go anywhere and still cannot produce a clean test record. Do not send someone to a site without the drawings, the test procedure and a named contact beforehand.

  • Treating travel willingness as the main qualification. Plenty of people will go anywhere and still cannot produce a clean test record.
  • Sending someone to a site without the drawings, the test procedure and a named contact beforehand. Even a strong engineer loses their first days to hunting.
  • Assuming per diem arrangements are standard. Rules differ by employer and by site, so settle them in writing early.

Your search in 3 steps

  1. Define the testing window

Tell us the equipment, the level of testing, who witnesses and how firm the dates are.

  2. Screen on one real test

We walk each candidate through a test they ran and bring you the ones who can explain it.

  3. Settle travel terms

Per diem, lodging and rotation are agreed before you meet anyone, not after an offer.

What changes when the site changes

Each new site reopens questions a local engineer stopped asking years ago. Where is the single line diagram kept, who holds the lockout authority, and does the owner's witness accept the commissioning firm's forms or insist on theirs? A good traveler asks these on the first morning and writes the answers down.

Ask us for a current range. BLS does not report a reasonable occupation match for this exact seat. We leave the figure out rather than put a different job’s wages beside your title. Send us the responsibilities and location so we can discuss the search without an invented pay benchmark.

Questions

How quickly can you put a shortlist in front of me?

It depends on discipline and how many sites the person must be free to visit. Give us the test window and we will tell you honestly what the pool looks like before we start.

What if their current firm counters the offer?

Traveling engineers often receive a counter because the firm needs them on a live project. We ask early what would change their mind and tell you if the answer is not about money.

Do they relocate or stay where they live?

Most stay where they live and travel to you. If you want someone local to a campus long term, that is a different search and we will say so.

Who pays for lodging and rental cars while an engineer rotates between sites?

Arrangements differ between commissioning firms and owners, so tell us what your project reimburses for the weeks the engineer is on your floor. We then compare that with what candidates receive from their current rotation.

How do I know they fit my project and not just any site?

Describe your owner witness requirements and the equipment makes. We then ask candidates about tests on comparable equipment and procedure styles.

Does the fee change because of the travel?

Ask us for the terms on the page and we will walk through how they apply to a contract or direct arrangement. We will not surprise you after a start date.

How a search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

Every search runs the same six steps. We agree the brief with you, map where the people work, find direct contact routes, reach out personally and repeatedly, then qualify each candidate live. You only see a short list of people who fit, with notes on each, and we stay with you through offer and start.

  1. 01

    Search Calibration

You get: A written brief you sign off on: scope, must-haves, pay band and who not to approach.

  2. 02

    Market Mapping

You get: A map of the companies and projects where your future hire is working today.

  3. 03

    Professional Contact Intelligence

You get: Verified direct contact routes to the people on that map, not job board replies.

  4. 04

    Persistent Personalized Outreach

You get: Repeated, role-specific outreach to people who are not looking, in your words.

  5. 05

    Live Candidate Qualification

You get: Each candidate is screened live against your brief before you hear their name.

  6. 06

    Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

You get: A short list with candidate briefs, then support through interviews, offer and start.

What should you know before you send a role?

How do you handle counteroffers?

We talk through motivation, pay and counteroffer risk with each candidate during live qualification and again before an offer, so you hear about the risk before it surprises you.

Is there a guarantee?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

What don't you do?

We do not post your job on boards, send stacks of unscreened resumes or charge an upfront fee. We do not approach candidates for your search before the brief is agreed with you.
