What does this hire really come down to?

Sustainability work here is mostly measurement. The manager builds the emissions inventory, matches energy purchases to load, tracks water use, and supports building certifications. The results are read by customers, investors, and regulators, so mistakes hurt credibility. A manager who loves messaging more than measurement is a risk.

Ask which standards they have used and what they think is wrong with them. Ask what they would stop reporting if it could not be verified. The job depends on cooperation from engineers and operators, who have little time and less patience for requests that add work. A person who can explain why a meter matters earns data. One who sends spreadsheets gets silence. We look for people who have spent time on a site and know where numbers come from. Ask what the last request from them to operators produced and whether they would ask the same way again.

Pressure is part of the role. Some managers are asked to present results in the best light, or to count purchases in ways that are technically allowed and misleading. Ask how they handled that. The answer tells you whether they will protect your credibility or spend it. It also helps to ask how they explain a bad number to customers who want better news. Candid managers describe what they said, what they offered, and what they refused to claim.

What do we check before you see anyone?

Ask which scopes they built and how they handled supplier data that was missing or estimated. Ask how they measured it, what method they used, and how they reported gaps. Ask how they tracked use effectiveness, what they changed, and what trade they made against energy.

  • Carbon accounting: ask which scopes they built and how they handled supplier data that was missing or estimated.
  • Renewable matching: ask how they measured it, what method they used, and how they reported gaps.
  • Water metrics: ask how they tracked use effectiveness, what they changed, and what trade they made against energy.
  • Certifications: ask which they led, what the hardest credit was, and what the project team resisted.
  • Reporting: ask who used the numbers, who challenged them, and what changed because of the challenge.
  • Cross-team work: ask how they got data from operators and what they did when it never arrived.
  • Supplier engagement: ask how they got emissions data from equipment makers and builders and what they did when it was missing.
  • Audit experience: ask whether their numbers were verified by a third party and what the reviewer found.

Where do we find these candidates?

Sustainability managers come from environmental consultancies, corporate sustainability teams, real estate and building groups, and utility programs. Some came from engineering and moved toward reporting. Others came from policy and learned the technical side. A few come from energy efficiency programs at utilities.

  • Sustainability managers come from environmental consultancies, corporate sustainability teams, real estate and building groups, and utility programs. Some came from engineering and moved toward reporting. Others came from policy and learned the technical side. A few come from energy efficiency programs at utilities. Others come from utility efficiency programs or from the sustainability groups of large technology buyers.
  • They move when reporting turns into marketing, when a company wants a title but no budget, or when they want closer ties to operations. Some leave consultancies to own one program. Others leave corporate teams to work on something physical. We ask what influence they expect and describe your support honestly. Many ask who the manager reports to, because reporting lines predict influence.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

Do not hire a communicator without measurement skill. Numbers eventually get audited. Ask them to explain a result without jargon. Do not keep the manager away from operations, where the data actually lives. Do not skip a frank conversation about pressure to present flattering results.

Your search in 3 steps

  1. Describe the program

We ask what you must report, to whom, and how mature your data is. That decides whether we look for a builder or a maintainer.

  2. Screen on numbers

We ask candidates how they built an inventory and handled bad data. You see notes on how honestly they described shortcuts.

  3. Arrange interviews

We set up conversations with operations and executive leaders, then handle references and the offer. We also ask what authority the manager will have over procurement and design choices.

Questions

What do you confirm before a sustainability manager shortlist goes out?

Each person has described a report they built and a data source they fixed. People who only wrote summaries are labeled as writers.

A sustainability candidate may be countered with a larger team. How should we answer?

Ask whether the team has a budget. Managers leave teams that lack authority over data.

Will a sustainability manager move to the site?

Reporting is desk work, so hybrid is normal. Say how many days the manager must stand in the building, since audits need someone to see the meters.

How much travel should we describe to a sustainability manager?

State audit visits per year and who books travel. Managers compare this with a desk-heavy alternative.

Do we need a sustainability manager if our energy team already reports metrics?

If disclosure rules or customers press for credible reporting, yes. If metrics stay internal, the energy team may do it.

If the sustainability seat includes a certification budget, is it inside the fee base?

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. We read the base from your approved offer and note the certification budget separately before search.

How a search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

Every search runs the same six steps. We agree the brief with you, map where the people work, find direct contact routes, reach out personally and repeatedly, then qualify each candidate live. You only see a short list of people who fit, with notes on each, and we stay with you through offer and start.

  1. 01

    Search Calibration

You get: A written brief you sign off on: scope, must-haves, pay band and who not to approach.

  2. 02

    Market Mapping

You get: A map of the companies and projects where your future hire is working today.

  3. 03

    Professional Contact Intelligence

You get: Verified direct contact routes to the people on that map, not job board replies.

  4. 04

    Persistent Personalized Outreach

You get: Repeated, role-specific outreach to people who are not looking, in your words.

  5. 05

    Live Candidate Qualification

You get: Each candidate is screened live against your brief before you hear their name.

  6. 06

    Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

You get: A short list with candidate briefs, then support through interviews, offer and start.

What should you know before you send a role?

How do you handle counteroffers?

We talk through motivation, pay and counteroffer risk with each candidate during live qualification and again before an offer, so you hear about the risk before it surprises you.

Is there a guarantee?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

What don't you do?

We do not post your job on boards, send stacks of unscreened resumes or charge an upfront fee. We do not approach candidates for your search before the brief is agreed with you.
