What does this hire really come down to?
The director sets the quality system across projects: the plan, the inspection regime, the audit program and the way nonconformances are escalated. They hire and direct quality managers and inspectors, and they brief the owner on risk. They do not inspect every item. Their value is in setting standards that field staff can actually follow under pressure.
The reporting line is the real question. If the director reports to the operations executive, their authority depends on that person's mood. If they report to the company leader or have a direct line to the owner, they can hold a milestone. Tell us which it is, because strong candidates will ask in the first call.
Adjacent seats are the project quality manager, who runs one job, and the commissioning lead, who proves systems work. The director sits above both and across several programs. If you only have one campus, you may need a quality manager instead.
What do we check before you see anyone?
Ask for a time they stopped or delayed a milestone for quality reasons, and what happened to the relationship afterward. Ask how many quality staff they have directed and what their audit program looked like in practice. Ask how they connect factory testing, site inspection and commissioning findings into one view.

Where do we find these candidates?
We search general contractors with mission critical portfolios, large specialty contractors, owner quality organizations and commissioning firms with quality practices. Manufacturing and aerospace quality leaders may transfer if they have learned construction, because their systems thinking is valuable once they understand how field work is inspected.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?
Do not give the title without the authority to stop work. Do not hire a director when a project quality manager would do the job. And talk with the project managers who will work with them daily before deciding, because the director succeeds only if those managers accept the role.

What the director must build across programs
Look for evidence of a quality system that travels. That means a common plan template, a shared nonconformance log, and a regular audit of project teams that is not announced weeks in advance.
Ask how they decide a project is in trouble before the numbers say so. Strong directors watch the rate of repeated nonconformances, the age of open items and how often inspectors are overruled.
Ask how they would handle an owner who wants a third-party quality firm while your own team already works the job. They should describe how to divide scope without hiding problems from either side.
Briefing the owner
A director should be able to show an owner where risk sits in a program without hiding behind a dashboard. Ask them to describe the last briefing they gave an owner, what bad news it contained and how the owner responded.
Also ask how they would present quality findings from several buildings together without drowning the reader.
Hiring the people beneath the director
A director is only as strong as the managers and inspectors they bring. Ask who they have promoted from inspector to manager, who they let go and what standard they used to decide.
Ask also how they keep field inspectors from being worn down by schedule pressure over a long program. Good answers mention rotation, access to escalation and visible backing from leadership.

Questions
How quickly could a quality director shortlist reach me?
Directors are few and mostly employed, so the search follows their notice and discretion. We will outline the realistic market once your portfolio is described, without promising a date.
Will a quality director's employer counter?
Often, since losing a director affects clients. We ask what drives the move to help you judge whether a counteroffer would hold.
Is relocation a barrier at director level?
It can be, because of family and seniority. Offer flexibility around location where you can, and be clear about travel expectations.
How do travel and per diem work for a director?
Directors usually travel between programs, and policies vary. Define frequency and allowance up front.
How do I know whether I need a director or a project quality manager?
A single campus usually needs a manager. Multiple programs, shared standards and owner reporting justify a director.
What compensation inputs do you need for a director who may manage other managers?
The base range, any bonus tied to program results and whether a vehicle or travel allowance is included. Directors compare these elements together, so partial information slows a conversation.
