- OEM Project Manager / Startup Project Manager
What does this hire really come down to?
An OEM project manager coordinates the manufacturer's scope: factory build dates, shipping, set-in-place support, startup, testing and closeout. They control the vendor's people and promises. They do not control the general contractor's trades, and the strongest ones are blunt with the site team about what they need and by when.
The tension is between commercial and technical leaning. A commercially minded manager protects margin, handles change requests and keeps the contract clean. A technically minded one knows when a startup engineer is guessing. Your product and your customers decide which balance you need.
Compared with a startup engineer, this role plans and sells the sequence but does not energize equipment. Compared with a general contractor project manager, the scope is narrower and the influence is weaker because the site belongs to someone else. People who have only held the contractor seat often underestimate how much persuasion this work takes.
What do we check before you see anyone?
Ask for a delivery that slipped. What was the cause, who found out first, and what did they tell the customer? Ask how they sequence startup resources across several sites at once, and what they do when two sites call for the same engineer.

- Ask how they sequence startup resources across several sites at once, and what they do when two sites call for the same engineer.
- Ask about change orders they have written for customer-caused delays. Strong managers keep contemporaneous records rather than reconstructing them.
- Probe handover. What must be signed, by whom and in what order before the customer accepts the equipment?
Where do we find these candidates?
Equipment manufacturers in switchgear, generators, UPS and thermal products are the closest background, especially people who moved from startup field work into coordination. Electrical and mechanical contractors' prefabrication and procurement groups produce people who understand lead times and vendor follow-up.

- Large industrial plant commissioning leads sometimes cross over, though they may need time on commercial terms.
Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?
Do not hire a site construction manager and expect vendor management skills to follow. Do not ignore whether the person can make an engineer on another continent act. Do not leave authority over field resources unclear between this role and service management.

Your search in 3 steps
- Mark the commercial reach
We confirm who owns contract changes, pricing and acceptance so we search for the right level of authority.
- Probe schedule stories
We ask for a slipped delivery in detail, since the answer shows how they communicate under pressure.
- Test resource judgment and compare
Candidates explain how they would split limited startup engineers across competing sites. You see who leans commercial and who leans technical, with plain notes on each.
Where the authority actually ends
The manager's power is mostly borrowed. Factory planners, shipping coordinators, field engineers and the customer's project team all answer to someone else. Ask finalists to describe a time they got a reluctant party to move without any formal authority. The details, such as what they offered and what they escalated, tell you more than a claim about leadership.
Also settle the handoff to service. When closeout happens, someone must own warranty questions and open punch items. A manager who treats acceptance as the finish line leaves your service team with a customer who feels abandoned.
How to read a candidate's schedules
Ask for an actual schedule they built, with the logic explained. Look for how they handled long lead items, what float they protected and which dates belonged to the customer. People who only update a schedule someone else made often cannot rebuild it when the site changes.
Ask who they would call first if a unit arrives damaged. The answer shows whether they know the freight claim process, the factory repair route and the customer conversation, all of which fall to this seat.

Questions
How fast can a shortlist come together?
It depends on whether you need manufacturer experience or can accept strong contractor-side managers. We will give you an early read once we know your product line.
Do these managers get counteroffers?
Often, because they hold customer relationships. We ask what the relationship with their current employer is like before you invest interview time.
Would a coordination manager move to be near our factory?
Many will if the plant is a real hub for the job, though fully remote coordination draws a different crowd. Tell us how often the manager must be on the factory floor, since that decides whether relocation is worth asking for.
How do we explain travel for a coordination role?
Describe expected site visits, factory visits and customer meetings separately. Candidates are rarely troubled by travel they understood in advance.
How can we check fit for our customers?
Describe a typical customer and ask how they would manage a late-arriving shipment. Compare their instincts with how your own team behaves.
Is the search harder if the manager must also own contract changes?
Yes, because commercial authority narrows the field to people who have written change requests against customers. Share the pay range and the contract reach, and we will say whether the two fit together. Fee terms sit in the written agreement.
