Mechanical Project Manager, Data Center for AI / HPC high-density and liquid cooling builds

Data Center Headhunters recruits critical facilities, data center operations, construction and delivery, commissioning, power and cooling, and executive talent for colocation, hyperscale and enterprise sites. We research the market, contact working people and qualify a shortlist for your opening. No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

Liquid cooling has turned mechanical scope into the center of the schedule. Your mechanical project manager must buy, sequence and defend a system that changes as the customer's hardware changes.

This is what we do all day: recruit data center professionals.

No postings. No stacks of resumes. No chasing. You interview a short list.

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

What does this hire really come down to?

A mechanical project manager on an AI or HPC build owns the cost and schedule of coolant distribution, heat rejection, piping and often the controls interface. They do not design the system or direct the pipe fitters, but they decide procurement priorities, change order stance and what to tell the owner when a design revision lands.

Technical approval sits with the engineer, field direction with the superintendent. Design volatility is the main commercial risk. Hardware generations change flow rates and temperatures, and the owner may ask for revisions late. A manager who accepts every change without recording its schedule impact will absorb losses. One who refuses all of them will damage the relationship. Ask how they balanced these on a real project.

Adjacent levels are distinct. A project engineer handles submittals and flushing records. A project manager owns the money. A liquid cooling engineer, which is a different search, owns the design and commissioning behavior. Do not hire a manager to do the engineer's job, or the reverse.

What do we check before you see anyone?

Ask how they priced a late design revision and communicated its effect on the schedule. A real answer includes who approved it and how it was documented. Ask how they managed specialty suppliers for coolant distribution units and heat exchangers, including lead times.

  • Ask how they priced a late design revision and communicated its effect on the schedule. A real answer includes who approved it and how it was documented.
  • Ask how they managed specialty suppliers for coolant distribution units and heat exchangers, including lead times. Vague talk about vendors suggests thin experience.
  • Ask what they understood about flushing, filling and pressure testing, and how it affected the schedule. A manager need not do the work but must plan for it.

Where do we find these candidates?

Look at mechanical project managers from contractors who built recent chilled water halls and moved into liquid systems, managers from semiconductor or pharmaceutical cleanroom work with strict piping regimes, and people from industrial refrigeration. Some come from manufacturers' project teams where they handled equipment delivery and start-up.

  • Candidates without liquid exposure can still fit if they have managed critical piping packages and are honest about the learning curve. Pair them with an experienced engineer.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

  • Seeking a manager who can explain every technical detail. The job is commercial and scheduling judgment backed by enough technical vocabulary.
  • Accepting claims of liquid experience without asking which system and what role. Rear door cooling and direct to chip systems differ in scope.
  • Neglecting to define change control. Without it, the manager will face the owner alone.

Your search in 3 steps

  1. Clarify the cooling approach

We ask which liquid method applies and who owns design, flushing and start-up.

  2. Define the change process

We learn how revisions are priced and approved so we screen for the right negotiator.

  3. Probe supplier management, then report

Candidates explain how they handled long lead specialty equipment. Each profile lists where the person is strong by their own account and where they will need support.

Questions that test commercial judgment

Ask what they did when the owner changed a flow requirement after piping was purchased. Ask how they recorded it.

Ask which supplier delay hurt the most and how they restructured the schedule.

Questions

How fast will we see candidates for a liquid cooling manager?

That depends on the specificity of the cooling design and authority. We screen as soon as the scope is clear, and we will say if the pool is narrow. A date promised before then would be a guess.

What if a manager receives a counteroffer?

People with liquid cooling responsibility are rare, so employers fight to keep them. We ask early what would keep them and whether your build answers that. You will know before the offer.

Will a manager on an AI build relocate?

AI builds are in many places, and some managers work from a regional office with site visits. We ask about relocation early. Your support will influence the pool.

How are travel and per diem handled?

We clarify the site visit expectations and what you will pay for each trip. A manager who splits time between office and site needs clear terms.

Is a chilled water manager a fit for liquid builds?

Often partly. They know the commercial side but may lack direct liquid experience. We test that gap and tell you what support they would need.

Is the fee different for a liquid cooling heavy search?

The terms on this page and in your agreement apply the same way. We will explain them for this seat, including how a relocation or signing package is treated, before you engage.

How a search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

Every search runs the same six steps. We agree the brief with you, map where the people work, find direct contact routes, reach out personally and repeatedly, then qualify each candidate live. You only see a short list of people who fit, with notes on each, and we stay with you through offer and start.

  1. 01

    Search Calibration

You get: A written brief you sign off on: scope, must-haves, pay band and who not to approach.

  2. 02

    Market Mapping

You get: A map of the companies and projects where your future hire is working today.

  3. 03

    Professional Contact Intelligence

You get: Verified direct contact routes to the people on that map, not job board replies.

  4. 04

    Persistent Personalized Outreach

You get: Repeated, role-specific outreach to people who are not looking, in your words.

  5. 05

    Live Candidate Qualification

You get: Each candidate is screened live against your brief before you hear their name.

  6. 06

    Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

You get: A short list with candidate briefs, then support through interviews, offer and start.
