This is what we do all day: recruit data center professionals.

What does this hire really come down to?
This is a different job from construction plumbing. The facilities plumber works inside an operating building, often near switchgear and server halls, and has to repair, not install. Most of the work is domestic water, drains, condensate lines from air handlers, and finding where a stain on a ceiling actually starts.
Leak detection is the core skill. It is not guessing. The plumber traces the line, uses the building drawings, isolates a section without starving anything critical, and decides whether to wait for a window. Ask what they have used to find a hidden leak and what the first check was.
Licensing depends on jurisdiction and scope. A journeyman may work under a master's license, and a master may sign for work only within their own authority. Verify current status where your site sits rather than relying on a résumé line.
What do we check before you see anyone?
Ask how they would shut down a branch feeding both a restroom and a mechanical room, and who they speak to first. Ask what condensate problems they have seen, such as clogged traps or poor slope, and how they cleared and prevented them.

- Ask how they behave when a leak is above equipment: where they place containment and who they inform before cutting.
Where do we find these candidates?
Look at service plumbers from commercial and institutional buildings, and plumbers from hospital or university maintenance teams who work around sensitive spaces. They are used to calls with constraints. Residential service plumbers are quick on diagnosis but may be untested around controlled access and change approvals.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?
Do not hire a pipe fitter from new construction and expect fault finding. Install speed and repair judgment are separate abilities. Do not overlook access rules. Escorted entry and permits slow work, and some tradespeople dislike that. Do not skip a plumbing and mechanical boundary.

Your search in 3 steps
- Mark the remit
Tell us which systems this plumber can touch alone and which belong to mechanical or the water treatment team.
- Confirm licensing needs and screen on real events
State which license your jurisdiction requires for the scope so we screen on the right basis. We ask each candidate for one repair inside an occupied building and the coordination around it.
- Meet the operations team
Include the person who approves work windows, since the plumber will rely on them daily.
Adjacent seats and handoffs
A pipefitter on the mechanical team handles chilled water and process piping, and the boundary with domestic water should be written down. A general maintenance technician can clear a simple drain but should hand a recurring backup to the plumber. Candidates who have worked with such a split will describe it easily.
Project differences matter too. A site with raised floors and under-floor water detection asks for more caution than an office block with a basement, so describe your building honestly. Say whether the plumber also covers kitchens, locker rooms and exterior irrigation, since each adds a different kind of call.
Finally, ask how they document a repair. A photo, a pipe location note and a word to the operations desk save the next person an hour.
Where do we fill this role?
What does BLS publish for this role?
The figure below comes from the national OEWS row for Plumbers, Pipefitters, and Steamfitters. Read the mapping badge before using it in a budget. A broader occupation can include jobs outside data centers. Compare your seat’s responsibilities and pay basis with the published occupation rather than treating the median as an offer quote.
Closest proxy. Plumbers, Pipefitters, and Steamfitters is the closest occupational proxy based on the work described, not a separate data center wage series. BLS does not distinguish this title, experience level, shift, credentials or data center employers. Confirm the actual duties before using this comparison.

Questions
How soon will plumbers with live-building experience appear?
We avoid promising a date. Plumbers comfortable around live equipment are not easy to find, and licensing narrows the pool further. We will report back when we see how your location affects it.
Why might a facilities plumber accept a counter and stay?
A reliable facilities plumber is hard for any company to lose, so a counter is common. We ask early about reasons for leaving beyond pay, such as hours or authority. If those reasons are thin, we will say so before you make an offer.
What does a license from another state mean if the plumber moves here?
Some will, but licensing rules differ by jurisdiction, so a move can mean new paperwork. Ask us how long that is likely to take for candidates from other states. Tell us what you will cover.
Does after hours leak response carry any travel pay?
Typically it is site based with after hours call-outs. If you want coverage across several buildings, state it plainly. Per diem applies only when overnight travel is part of the posted job.
How do I read a plumber's fit for an occupied building?
Check that the person has repaired lines inside occupied buildings and not only installed them. Then listen to how they talk about asking permission before a shutoff. Someone who bristles at approvals may struggle beside live equipment.
What should I confirm about fees for a licensed trade search?
Our fee and replacement terms are set in the agreement and described on this site. We will explain how they apply to a plumbing search before work begins.
