What does this hire really come down to?

Data sanitization in IT asset disposition is a custody job with technical steps inside it. The technician receives hardware from decommissioned halls, matches serial numbers to a manifest, then either overwrites, cryptographically erases, degausses, or physically destroys the media according to the method the customer's policy names. The method belongs to the customer or the program owner.

The technician executes it faithfully and records the result per device. The hiring question is which kind of site you run. A reseller line cares about verified erasure so equipment can return to market. A destruction line cares about shredding, witnessing, and chain of custody. Many mix both. The person who is excellent at software erasure of enterprise drives may have never handled a shredder, and the reverse is just as common.

This is not a data center technician and not a decommissioning crew member. Those people pull racks and cut cable. The ITAD technician starts when hardware has arrived at a processing area, and their discipline is accounting for every serial number, not removing equipment safely from a live room.

What do we check before you see anyone?

Ask them to walk through one device from dock to report. Where was it logged, who could see it, and what did the final record say. Vague descriptions of a process usually mean they watched rather than ran it. Ask what they did when a drive failed erasure or would not spin up.

  • Ask which methods they have actually performed and on which media types: spinning disks, solid state drives, tapes, and handheld devices behave differently, and an overwrite pass is not equivalent on all of them.
  • Ask what they did when a drive failed erasure or would not spin up. The correct answer involves quarantine and escalation, not setting it aside.
  • Ask about witnessed destruction and who signed what. Clean handling of customer-facing paperwork matters when a client asks for evidence.

Where do we find these candidates?

Refurbishment and asset recovery operations that process enterprise equipment are the nearest match to a reseller line. Secure shredding and records destruction backgrounds suit destruction-heavy sites, especially where witnessed destruction is routine. Internal IT depots and hardware refresh teams bring device knowledge, though they may not have worked under customer audit.

  • Managed print and electronics recycling floors give volume handling, but ask how much of it was recorded per device.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

Do not hire a technician with strong hardware skills and no habit of recording every action. Tell candidates which standard or customer policy the site follows, then judging them on the wrong one. Do not let one person receive, erase, and report with no second check on the same devices.

Your search in 3 steps

  1. Name your methods

Send us the methods you perform, the media you process, and who audits you. We screen against that exact work.

  2. Separate custody from technique

We interview on both and tell you which a candidate is stronger in, since the gap affects your training plan.

  3. Probe exceptions and verify records

We ask about failed erasures, mismatched serials, and missing items, because that is where records break. Former supervisors are asked about accuracy of reports and handling of customer questions.

What does BLS publish for this role?

Ask us for a current range. BLS does not report a reasonable occupation match for this exact seat. We leave the figure out rather than put a different job’s wages beside your title. Send us the responsibilities and location so we can discuss the search without an invented pay benchmark.

Questions

How soon can we see an ITAD technician shortlist?

It depends on whether you need erasure, destruction, or both and how strict your customer audits are. A narrow method list will reduce the pool, so tell us what you can train.

Do counteroffers happen in this field?

They do, especially where the technician is trusted with customer paperwork. We ask early what is pushing them out so a counteroffer does not surprise you.

Will candidates need to relocate to reach our facility?

Processing sites tend to sit in industrial areas with a limited local pool. If you are open to relocation support, say so up front and we will include people from farther away.

Is there travel or per diem?

Most of the work happens at the processing facility. Some programs send technicians on site to witness or perform destruction at a customer location, and if yours does, we will ask about it in screening.

How do we judge fit for custody work?

Listen for how they describe mistakes. People who are comfortable reporting their own errors are safer with customer data.

How are fees handled for this kind of role?

The terms sit in the agreement we provide and we can walk you through them before you commit. If budget for the role is a worry, tell us the range you are considering.

How a search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

Every search runs the same six steps. We agree the brief with you, map where the people work, find direct contact routes, reach out personally and repeatedly, then qualify each candidate live. You only see a short list of people who fit, with notes on each, and we stay with you through offer and start.

  1. 01

    Search Calibration

You get: A written brief you sign off on: scope, must-haves, pay band and who not to approach.

  2. 02

    Market Mapping

You get: A map of the companies and projects where your future hire is working today.

  3. 03

    Professional Contact Intelligence

You get: Verified direct contact routes to the people on that map, not job board replies.

  4. 04

    Persistent Personalized Outreach

You get: Repeated, role-specific outreach to people who are not looking, in your words.

  5. 05

    Live Candidate Qualification

You get: Each candidate is screened live against your brief before you hear their name.

  6. 06

    Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

You get: A short list with candidate briefs, then support through interviews, offer and start.
