What does this hire really come down to?

A chief commercial officer owns pricing, customer strategy, contracts and the sales organization. A vice president of sales usually owns the sales team and the pipeline but not pricing or contract terms. Decide which of those you are really hiring, because the titles are used loosely.

What is sold changes everything. A developer leasing capacity negotiates with a small set of large technology buyers and needs fluency in power, term length and expansion rights. A contractor or services firm sells to owners and developers and needs credibility on schedule and delivery. A colocation seller deals with enterprise buyers who want service guarantees.

Commercial leaders in this field depend on technical partners. They must explain delivery dates, power availability and service terms with confidence. Ask how they work with engineering and operations before promising anything to a customer.

What do we check before you see anyone?

Ask for the structure, who sat across the table, and what they gave away. Detail separates leaders from observers. Ask what they could approve without escalation, and a case where they declined business. Real authority produces real stories. Ask about a commitment made to a customer that the operations team could not meet, and how they repaired it.

  • Deals they personally led: ask for the structure, who sat across the table, and what they gave away. Detail separates leaders from observers.
  • Pricing authority: ask what they could approve without escalation, and a case where they declined business. Real authority produces real stories.
  • Delivery honesty: ask about a commitment made to a customer that the operations team could not meet, and how they repaired it.

Where do we find these candidates?

We look at commercial leaders from data center developers and operators, sales heads from large specialty contractors and equipment makers, and senior sellers in adjacent infrastructure such as fiber and power. Each shows a different network and different contract fluency.

  • Large enterprise technology sellers can transfer, but they need testing on capital-intensive, long-term contracts.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

Do not choose a smooth presenter who has never owned a contract. Ask who reviewed the paper. Do not ignore the customer base they bring. Relationships may belong to a former employer and may not follow them. Do not hire a seller for a role that needs pricing and strategy.

Your search in 3 steps

  1. Define the commercial mandate

We confirm whether the seat owns pricing, contracts and strategy, or only the sales team.

  2. Examine real deals

We help you shape questions around actual negotiations and what was conceded.

  3. Settle compensation structure

We work through how base, incentive and restrictions on prior customers will be handled before offer.

What changes from sales director

A regional sales director owns accounts and quota. The chief commercial officer sets what the company will and will not agree to, including term, expansion rights, service credits and exclusivity, and answers for the margin consequences.

Ask about a deal they walked away from and how the board or owners reacted. It tells you whether they hold a line.

Check also how they have paid and managed their own team, since incentives drive behavior in long sales cycles.

Questions worth asking

Ask how they would respond to a large customer wanting capacity sooner than your delivery team can honestly provide. Listen for who they involve internally and whether they renegotiate or overpromise.

Ask how they hand a signed customer to operations. Weak handoffs cause the disputes your service team inherits.

Ask what they would never promise a customer in writing. Careful sellers have a clear list, usually involving power availability dates, completion dates and uptime commitments.

What does BLS publish for this role?

The figure below comes from the national OEWS row for Sales Managers. Read the mapping badge before using it in a budget. A broader occupation can include jobs outside data centers. Questions

What do you need from me before you can show commercial leaders?

Tell us who your buyers are, how long deals run and whether the seat sets pricing and contract terms. Candidates sort themselves by the buyer type they know.

A sales head is offered a larger incentive to stay. How do you handle that?

Larger incentive offers are standard. We ask what the candidate cannot do at their company, such as price a deal themselves, and you see whether your seat solves it.

Would a commercial officer move to our market?

Customer relationships may sit near the current home, so a move can weaken their pipeline for a time. Tell us whether remote selling from another city is acceptable.

What customer travel should I expect from this role?

Customer site tours, tenant meetings and conferences are typical, and candidates ask about expenses and lounge or airline policy. Decide that before offers.

How can I test whether the seller fits my delivery team?

Ask them to respond to a customer demanding power earlier than operations can confirm. Your delivery people should hear the answer.

Where are the fee terms for this sales leadership search?

The agreement we share at the start contains them. Ask about any commission or equity element of the offer.

How a search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

Every search runs the same six steps. We agree the brief with you, map where the people work, find direct contact routes, reach out personally and repeatedly, then qualify each candidate live. You only see a short list of people who fit, with notes on each, and we stay with you through offer and start.

  1. 01

    Search Calibration

You get: A written brief you sign off on: scope, must-haves, pay band and who not to approach.

  2. 02

    Market Mapping

You get: A map of the companies and projects where your future hire is working today.

  3. 03

    Professional Contact Intelligence

You get: Verified direct contact routes to the people on that map, not job board replies.

  4. 04

    Persistent Personalized Outreach

You get: Repeated, role-specific outreach to people who are not looking, in your words.

  5. 05

    Live Candidate Qualification

You get: Each candidate is screened live against your brief before you hear their name.

  6. 06

    Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

You get: A short list with candidate briefs, then support through interviews, offer and start.

What should you know before you send a role?

How do you handle counteroffers?

We talk through motivation, pay and counteroffer risk with each candidate during live qualification and again before an offer, so you hear about the risk before it surprises you.

Is there a guarantee?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

What don't you do?

We do not post your job on boards, send stacks of unscreened resumes or charge an upfront fee. We do not approach candidates for your search before the brief is agreed with you.
