BESS / Microgrid Engineer recruiters who bring you a focused shortlist

Data Center Headhunters are BESS / Microgrid Engineer recruiters for data center owners, operators and builders. Send us the open role and we find working BESS / Microgrid Engineer candidates, qualify each one live and give you a short list to interview. No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

You are adding batteries or a microgrid to support a data center, and you need an engineer who understands how storage behaves on a real electrical system, not just on a product sheet.

This is what we do all day: recruit data center professionals.

No postings. No stacks of resumes. No chasing. You interview a short list.

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

What does this hire really come down to?

A BESS or microgrid engineer designs and integrates battery storage, power conversion, controls and protection with the site's electrical system. They define how the system charges, discharges and islands from the grid, and how it coordinates with generators and UPS. They are not the same as the controls technician who commissions it.

The decision to settle is the use case. Backup support, peak shaving, grid services and full islanding each require different controls and protection studies. An engineer who built storage for grid services may have little experience with a facility that cannot tolerate a transfer failure.

Adjacent seats include the power systems planning engineer, who studies the system, and the commissioning engineer, who proves it. This role owns the design intent and integration details. Ask where their involvement started and ended on a recent project.

What do we check before you see anyone?

Ask how they handled protection coordination when the battery fed fault current. This separates real integrators from specification writers. Ask what the controller decides and what stays manual. Autonomy levels differ and matter in a live facility. Ask about thermal and fire safety design for battery enclosures, and who approved it locally.

  • Ask about the last time commissioning exposed a design flaw. How they responded shows their honesty.

Where do we find these candidates?

We search utility-scale storage developers and integrators whose engineers have designed and commissioned systems. Electrical engineering consultancies with microgrid practices bring protection and controls depth. Generator and switchgear manufacturers' application engineers know how equipment behaves together, though they may lack field time.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

Do not hire a solar engineer and assume storage is similar. Storage adds bidirectional flow and safety issues that solar does not. Do not ignore island mode. Many designs work grid-tied and fail during islanding. Do not treat fire code as an afterthought.

Your search in 3 steps

  1. Pin down the use

We confirm whether the system is backup, cost management, grid support, or islanding capable.

  2. Match the system size

We target engineers with experience at a similar scale and voltage.

  3. Probe integration and share the slate

Candidates describe protection, controls and commissioning details from real projects. You receive candidates with notes on depth and where support may be needed.

Interview questions

Ask them to explain what happens electrically when the grid drops and the battery takes the load. A strong answer covers transition, protection and generator coordination.

Ask what they would add to the commissioning plan for a system that has never islanded on site.

Ask how they would verify the battery management system and the site controller talk to each other correctly. Integration failures often sit between suppliers, not inside either product.

Ask how they treated degradation and warranty conditions in the design. Cycling assumptions can quietly void coverage if operations drift from the plan.

Ask what manual overrides remain and who may use them. A microgrid that cannot be taken out of automatic by a trained operator is a liability in a live facility.

Ask which failure modes kept them awake on a past project, and what they changed in the design afterward. Specific stories signal real exposure to field problems.

Before the search starts

Gather the single line diagram, the load profile and any utility interconnection correspondence. Candidates can only judge the job if they see the actual constraints.

Decide who owns the system after handover. If operations will run it, ask whether the engineer is expected to write procedures and train the staff, since that is a different skill from design.

Also confirm which standards your local fire authority applies to battery enclosures, so candidates can speak to them directly.

What does BLS publish for this role?

The figure below comes from the national OEWS row for Electrical Engineers. Read the mapping badge before using it in a budget. A broader occupation can include jobs outside data centers. Compare your seat’s responsibilities and pay basis with the published occupation rather than treating the median as an offer quote.

Broader occupation. Electrical Engineers is a broader occupation based on the work described, not a separate data center wage series. BLS does not distinguish this title, experience level, shift, credentials or data center employers. Confirm the actual duties before using this comparison.

Questions

How soon could we see BESS integration engineers?

Candidates who have energized storage beside live loads are fewer than those who wrote specifications. We name that gap after scoping and do not quote a figure.

A storage developer may match an offer to keep its integrator. Is that probable?

It can be, given demand for people who survived commissioning. We ask what scope would make them move and tell you if you cannot offer it.

Would a microgrid engineer relocate to our campus?

Some prefer to stay regional and visit for commissioning. Tell us whether presence during islanding tests is mandatory.

Who covers lodging during battery commissioning weeks?

Commissioning needs long site stays. Write the allowance and lodging rules into the offer.

How do I choose between a grid-services storage engineer and a backup power engineer?

Grid services work optimizes dispatch and revenue, while backup work prioritizes transfer without interruption. Pick the profile that matches the load you protect.

If the project grows from batteries to full microgrid, does the search change?

Adding generation controls and islanding raises the bar for the engineer. Tell us now so we can scope it correctly.

How a search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

Every search runs the same six steps. We agree the brief with you, map where the people work, find direct contact routes, reach out personally and repeatedly, then qualify each candidate live. You only see a short list of people who fit, with notes on each, and we stay with you through offer and start.

  1. 01

    Search Calibration

You get: A written brief you sign off on: scope, must-haves, pay band and who not to approach.

  2. 02

    Market Mapping

You get: A map of the companies and projects where your future hire is working today.

  3. 03

    Professional Contact Intelligence

You get: Verified direct contact routes to the people on that map, not job board replies.

  4. 04

    Persistent Personalized Outreach

You get: Repeated, role-specific outreach to people who are not looking, in your words.

  5. 05

    Live Candidate Qualification

You get: Each candidate is screened live against your brief before you hear their name.

  6. 06

    Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

You get: A short list with candidate briefs, then support through interviews, offer and start.
