Data Center Superintendent for Hyperscale Builds

Data Center Headhunters recruits critical facilities, data center operations, construction and delivery, commissioning, power and cooling, and executive talent for colocation, hyperscale and enterprise sites. We research the market, contact working people and qualify a shortlist for your opening. No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

On a phased hyperscale campus the superintendent you hire for building one becomes the person who sets the habits for buildings two through six, so the brief is about repeatability as much as skill.

This is what we do all day: recruit data center professionals.

No postings. No stacks of resumes. No chasing. You interview a short list.

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

What does this hire really come down to?

A superintendent on a multi-building campus is not running a single job. They run one building while the next is being poured and the last is in commissioning. The owner uses a standard design, so the field lead is judged on how much faster and cleaner each repeat gets.

That favors someone who keeps notes, trains foremen and builds a crew that carries over, not a hero who solves each crisis alone. The first tradeoff is a specialist in one phase versus a person who has seen turnover. Some superintendents are excellent at structure and shell and have never lived through energization or integrated testing. On a campus those late phases decide the schedule for everything behind them. If you can only afford one profile, hire the one who has walked a building through turnover, then pair them with a strong shell foreman.

The second tradeoff is how the owner sees the person. Hyperscale owners often approve key personnel and expect field leaders to follow a playbook. A superintendent who resents standards will fight the owner every week. One who enjoys a repeatable method will make each building easier. Ask how they felt about owner standards on their last program, and listen for respect with some backbone.

What do we check before you see anyone?

Ask which phases they personally led on one campus, from site work through energization. Someone with only two phases will be learning on yours. Ask how they ran pull planning with subs and what changed in the plan during the first month.

  • Phase range: ask which phases they personally led on one campus, from site work through energization. Someone with only two phases will be learning on yours.
  • Pull planning: ask how they ran pull planning with subs and what changed in the plan during the first month. Real planners describe revisions, not a perfect first draft.
  • Carry-over: ask which foremen followed them from building to building and why. A crew that follows is evidence of leadership.
  • Energization readiness: ask what they checked before power was introduced to a hall and who had authority to hold it. Specific hold points are what you want.
  • Owner interface: ask how they handled an owner inspector who rejected work. A fair account shows they can work inside a standard.
  • Safety on a crowded site: ask how they controlled many trades in adjacent buildings. Look for zoning, access and orientation habits.

Where do we find these candidates?

Superintendents for campuses come from general contractors with mission critical divisions, from large industrial and pharmaceutical builds where repeating phases are normal and from specialty contractors who rose into general roles. Some have spent years on one owner's program and know its standards well.

  • Superintendents for campuses come from general contractors with mission critical divisions, from large industrial and pharmaceutical builds where repeating phases are normal and from specialty contractors who rose into general roles. Some have spent years on one owner's program and know its standards well. Others have worked on many designs and bring range.
  • They move when the program they are on is ending, when an employer rotates them away from home with no pattern or when a rival offers a title that matches the work they already do. Some want a campus near home after years of travel. Others want to join a firm whose pipeline is clear. What you can offer is predictability: how many buildings, in what order, over how many years.
  • Candidates will ask about rotation and per diem. State your approach as the client and keep it consistent across the team, because superintendents talk to one another.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

Do not hire a shell-and-core specialist and discover at energization that no one on the field team has done it. Do not treat the owner's standards as an obstacle in the interview and as a requirement in the offer.

  • Offering a single-building commitment to someone who is being asked to move for a campus.

Your search in 3 steps

  1. Map the campus plan

We ask how many buildings, in what phases and which are already underway. That tells us whether you need a first-phase lead for the first building or a repeater for later ones.

  2. Screen for carry-over

We ask candidates which crews and foremen followed them, which phases they led and how they worked with owner standards, and report the specifics to you.

  3. Fix the rotation before the offer

We help you decide on rotation, per diem and campus length so candidates compare offers on the same terms.

Questions

Should the first building's superintendent also run the later ones?

Often yes, if they keep a crew together and document their method. If they struggle with the late phases, add a turnover lead beside them. The goal is that building three is not learned from scratch.

How do we handle an owner who must approve our superintendent?

Share the owner's criteria with us before we present anyone. We screen against them, so the owner's review is a confirmation and not a surprise.

What if our campus is spread over several years with gaps between buildings?

Tell candidates plainly. People with families may prefer a campus job precisely because it is stable, but gaps worry them. Explain how the crew is kept busy between buildings.

Does union or open shop background matter here?

It can. A superintendent used to one labor model may need time to adapt to another. Ask about the crews they have run and the local conditions on your site.

How a search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

Every search runs the same six steps. We agree the brief with you, map where the people work, find direct contact routes, reach out personally and repeatedly, then qualify each candidate live. You only see a short list of people who fit, with notes on each, and we stay with you through offer and start.

  1. 01

    Search Calibration

You get: A written brief you sign off on: scope, must-haves, pay band and who not to approach.

  2. 02

    Market Mapping

You get: A map of the companies and projects where your future hire is working today.

  3. 03

    Professional Contact Intelligence

You get: Verified direct contact routes to the people on that map, not job board replies.

  4. 04

    Persistent Personalized Outreach

You get: Repeated, role-specific outreach to people who are not looking, in your words.

  5. 05

    Live Candidate Qualification

You get: Each candidate is screened live against your brief before you hear their name.

  6. 06

    Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

You get: A short list with candidate briefs, then support through interviews, offer and start.
