- Sheet Metal Foreman
What does this hire really come down to?
A sheet metal foreman runs a crew on the floor and answers for production, layout and rework. The foreman does not set the budget or negotiate change orders. What we look for is whether this person coordinates routes with other trades before fabrication or discovers the clash after the duct has been hung.
The adjacent levels matter. A journeyman installs what he is handed, a general foreman supervises several foremen across areas, and the foreman sits between them. If your site needs someone who also handles containment panels, hot aisle enclosures and louvers, say so early, because that experience is narrower than general commercial duct work.
Client differences show up in cleanliness and testing. Some owners want sealed ducts pressure tested and capped at the end of every shift. Others care mostly about schedule. Tell us which culture your project runs.
What do we check before you see anyone?
Ask how they lay out a congested corridor with cable tray, pipe and duct, and who they speak with before cutting a single piece. Ask what they do when the shop delivers fittings that do not match the field. A good answer names the measuring habit, not only the complaint.

- Ask about duct sealing, leakage testing and keeping open ends covered. Someone who has worked in a clean build will answer without hesitating.
Where do we find these candidates?
We look at commercial and industrial sheet metal contractors, union and open shop, where foremen have led crews on large air handling and exhaust work. We also look at hospital, laboratory and cleanroom ventilation backgrounds, because their sealing and testing discipline carries over well.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?
Do not treat a strong journeyman as a ready foreman. Do not ignore the shop relationship. A foreman who cannot talk with the fabrication team sends rework in both directions. Do not hire on duct tonnage stories without asking who planned the sequence.

Your search in 3 steps
- Define the crew and the area
Tell us crew size, the scope of ductwork and whether the foreman reports to a general foreman or a superintendent.
- Agree on the must haves
Separate the things that cannot flex, such as sealing standards or union affiliation, from the things you can teach.
- Meet a short list
We send people whose work matches your crew structure, and you interview with the questions above.
What the remit does and does not include
Decide who holds the layout drawings in the field. Some foremen build from coordinated models, others from marked up prints, and a person used to one may stall with the other. Ask which they used and who corrected the drawings when the field disagreed.
Permitted work matters too. Welding, rigging and lift equipment use sit with trained people, and the foreman should know who on the crew is cleared for each. A foreman who answers for the crew's safety paperwork, not only its output, is worth more on a live site. Ten or thirty hour OSHA Outreach completion is a course record, not a licence, and the thirty hour course suits people with supervisory duty.
Operating conditions to describe honestly
If part of the building is energized or occupied, say so. Cutting and grinding near running equipment, dust control, and protecting live floors are habits that a crew learns, and the foreman sets them. Candidates who have worked only in empty shells need to hear this before the offer, not afterward.

What does BLS publish for this role?
The figure below comes from the national OEWS row for First-Line Supervisors of Construction Trades and Extraction Workers. Read the mapping badge before using it in a budget. A broader occupation can include jobs outside data centers. Compare your seat’s responsibilities and pay basis with the published occupation rather than treating the median as an offer quote.
Broader occupation. First-Line Supervisors of Construction Trades and Extraction Workers is a broader occupation based on the work described, not a separate data center wage series. BLS does not distinguish this title, experience level, shift, credentials or data center employers. Confirm the actual duties before using this comparison.

Questions
How quickly can you give me a shortlist for a foreman seat?
It depends on how specific your crew and testing requirements are. A clear scope and an agreed trade affiliation shorten the work considerably, and we will tell you plainly if the market is thin.
What if my foreman candidate takes a counteroffer?
Foremen are often valued by their current contractor, so it happens. We ask early what would make them leave and tell you if their reasons look weak.
Will a foreman relocate for a campus build?
Some will, especially when housing or a project length is clear. Others prefer to travel for the job and keep their home base, so decide which you can support.
How do travel and per diem work for this role?
Per diem is set by you and the foreman, and it needs to be stated before an offer. Travelers expect it to cover lodging and meals near the site.
How do I know a foreman fits my crew?
Ask them to describe the last time a coordination problem reached their crew, and what they changed afterward. Fit shows in how they talk about the other trades.
How do your fees apply to a foreman search?
Our fee terms are explained when we agree the search, and you can ask about them on the first call. We will explain exactly how they apply to a field leadership hire.
