Project Manager, Data Center for Modular, prefab and edge deployments

Data Center Headhunters recruits critical facilities, data center operations, construction and delivery, commissioning, power and cooling, and executive talent for colocation, hyperscale and enterprise sites. We research the market, contact working people and qualify a shortlist for your opening. No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

Modular and edge work moves the project manager's attention from the field to the factory, the shipping route and the many small sites, and you need someone who is comfortable with that shift.

This is what we do all day: recruit data center professionals.

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

What does this hire really come down to?

A manager on modular or prefab work spends much of the schedule before anything reaches a site. Design freeze, factory slots, factory acceptance testing, transport permits and crane time are the controlling items. The field portion is shorter, but any error in site readiness wastes the factory's work.

Ask whether your manager will be at the factory, at the site, or both, since the job is different. Edge deployments add repetition across many small locations. The manager coordinates local permits, utility connections, landlords or hosts and field crews who may differ at each site. Strong candidates have built a repeatable site checklist and know when to stop following it. The challenge is attention: ten small jobs can hide a problem that one large job would not.

Below this seat, a coordinator tracks deliveries and permits. A senior project manager owns a program of deployments and the supplier relationship. This seat runs a defined set of units or sites and answers to the program owner.

What do we check before you see anyone?

Ask what they inspected at a factory and what they did when a unit failed an acceptance test. Ask how they confirmed site readiness before a module shipped, including foundations, utilities and access. Ask how they handled a permit or utility delay at one site without letting it spread to the others.

How a search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

We use executive-search discipline for technical, frontline and leadership assignments. That means understanding the work, researching the right market and holding meaningful conversations before recommending an introduction. The questions change with the assignment. A shortlist is an outcome of that judgment, not the whole service.

Infrastructure is interconnected. So is the search.
  1. 01

    Search Calibration

We agree what the person must accomplish and what they will actually own. Construction, commissioning and live operations need different questions. We clarify systems, site type, scale, decision authority, reporting lines and the team around the hire.

  2. 02

    Market Mapping

We research comparable sites, projects and teams, then consider adjacent backgrounds where the experience could transfer. A matching title is a starting point, not evidence that someone has handled the same responsibility.

  3. 03

    Professional Contact Intelligence

Contact research helps us approach relevant people appropriately. It enables the search; it is not the product. Public records can be incomplete or out of date, so employment history and responsibility remain questions to discuss and confirm where appropriate.

  4. 04

    Persistent Personalized Outreach

We explain the actual work and why the opportunity may be relevant, then follow up thoughtfully and respectfully. We listen to whether a move makes sense for that person rather than treating a response as proof of interest or fit.

  5. 05

    Live Candidate Qualification

We ask about work personally owned, decisions made and what happened when a plan went wrong. We discuss motivation and practical terms: compensation, shifts, travel, per diem where relevant, availability and authority. We distinguish the candidate's account from anything independently confirmed.

  6. 06

    Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

You receive a reasoned brief: why the person may fit, supporting examples, uncertainties and useful interview questions. We agree which credentials, references or other checks are appropriate and who will complete them. We stay involved through feedback, offer discussions and the start, rather than stopping at an introduction.

Where do we find these candidates?

Managers from modular or prefabricated building programs, including non-data center work, understand factory-first scheduling. Telecom and tower deployment managers know many small sites, permits and utilities, though not always critical power. Data center managers who spent time on a factory-built power or cooling skid are a narrower but useful pool.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

Do not hire a field-focused manager and expect them to run factory relationships well. Do not overlook transport and lifting, which can delay a job as much as any technical issue. Do not use one person for many small sites without any support, then find issues late.

Questions we settle before outreach

  1. Decide where the person works

We ask whether the seat is factory, site or program level, because candidates differ sharply.

  2. Screen for repetition and exceptions

We ask for examples of both a checklist they built and a time they departed from it.

  3. Check the supplier relationship and prepare your interview panel

We ask how they handled supplier delays and what pressure they could actually apply. We suggest who from procurement and operations should meet finalists.

Transport and placement

Ask who planned the route, who held the permits, and who stood on site when the unit was set. A manager who has lived through a missed lift window will describe it vividly, and will have changed what they check before shipping.

What the factory record should show

Ask to see how a candidate organized factory test records so that a site team could use them later. A manager who treated factory acceptance as a separate paper exercise often finds the site commissioning team repeating work or disputing results.

Ask also who wrote the site readiness list and how the factory was told when the site was late. Silence between the two ends is the commonest source of idle units.

Questions

How fast can you give me a shortlist for modular work?

Timing depends on whether you need factory, site or program experience, and how many people have all three. We will tell you quickly if the pool is thin. We do not give a number of days.

Do counteroffers matter in this niche?

Yes, since a small group of firms compete for experienced people. Ask finalists what would keep them and whether their current program is ending. A counter often fails if the program itself is slowing down.

Should I offer relocation?

If the seat is factory based, relocation can be necessary, but edge program managers may live anywhere. Describe where the work is and decide before interviewing.

How do travel and per diem work for edge deployments?

Edge program managers can travel often between small sites. Clarify how many nights and which expenses are covered, since candidates add up the cost of constant travel.

How do I judge fit between factory and field thinking?

Ask the candidate to explain a defect found at the site that should have been caught at the factory. A useful answer names who should have caught it and what changed afterward.

How do your fees apply?

Fee terms are in the agreement signed before work begins, and we explain them plainly. Ask about anything unclear for this seat.
