Project Engineer, Data Center for Modular, prefab and edge deployments
Data Center Headhunters recruits critical facilities, data center operations, construction and delivery, commissioning, power and cooling, and executive talent for colocation, hyperscale and enterprise sites. We research the market, contact working people and qualify a shortlist for your opening. No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.
Modular and edge work moves much of the build into a factory and leaves the site to receive, set and connect. The project engineer's job shifts from field coordination to managing a manufacturing schedule, shipping, and a short, intense site window. The hire needs to enjoy that rhythm. Interview for the schedule discipline that a factory demands, and for calm on the day a truck arrives and the crane is already booked.
This is what we do all day: recruit data center professionals.
No postings. No stacks of resumes. No chasing. You interview a short list.
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

What does this hire really come down to?
Decide whether the seat covers factory and site. Someone who visits the factory to review witness tests brings a different value than someone who only receives the unit. Ask how they managed interfaces. Modular units still need utility connections, foundations and permits from separate parties, and a missed interface stops installation.
Edge deployments often repeat across many small sites. Ask how they handled consistency across locations when permits and utilities differed.
What do we check before you see anyone?
Have them describe a factory acceptance review and what they did when a unit failed an item. Ask how they coordinated transport, crane lifts and site readiness for the same delivery date. Check how they tracked permits and utility connections for each site and what slowed them.

- Ask how they handled a unit damaged in transit: who inspected it, who owned the claim, and how the site schedule recovered.
Where do we find these candidates?
Look at project engineers from modular manufacturers and from contractors who installed prefab electrical rooms or skids. Telecom and tower program coordinators who managed many small sites can transfer, though they may need power and cooling coaching. Contractors who install skid-mounted generators or containerized plant often have project engineers who understand the receive, set and connect rhythm directly.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?
Do not treat modular as simpler. Site risk concentrates into a few critical days, and a missed utility interface stops installation. Do not ignore permit differences between jurisdictions, or skip the owner's acceptance criteria that go beyond the manufacturer's own testing.

Your search in 3 steps
- Define the boundary and the records
State where factory responsibility ends and site responsibility begins, and agree which factory records the owner expects before shipment.
- Ask about failed tests and logistics
Request a story where factory testing found a problem, then pose a missed crane slot and ask what they would do.
- Check travel appetite
Confirm they accept factory and site visits, and let your field lead judge their vocabulary.
The site window is short
A conventional build gives the team months to absorb surprises. A modular delivery gives days. The project engineer prepares foundations, power and permits so that the unit lands once and connects cleanly.
Ask what they checked the week before delivery. Strong answers include survey, utility readiness and rigging plans.
Edge is a different animal from a modular hall
Edge sites tend to be small, numerous and located in places with uneven utility service. The project engineer becomes a program coordinator, juggling permits, landlords and utility applications across many places at once.
Ask for a story about a location where the utility connection ran late and how they sequenced the remaining sites around it. Their answer shows whether they can manage a portfolio rather than one project.
What a modular veteran should be able to explain
They should be able to describe how the unit was anchored, how it was lifted, who owned the connection between unit and site plant, and what the owner witnessed before energization. If any step is vague, they probably watched rather than managed it.

Questions
How long until I see candidates with factory and site experience?
We do not quote numbers. People who have both witnessed factory tests and handled a crane day are fewer than those with site experience alone. We will explain what we find early.
Do manufacturers counter when a project engineer wants to leave?
Often, since people who understand both factory and site are scarce. We discuss the reasons for leaving openly. Strong motives such as scope make counteroffers less likely to stick.
Does a modular role mean moving toward the factory?
Sometimes, sometimes not, if the role is travel based. Tell us whether the person lives near the plant or flies between sites.
How do I set expense rules for frequent short trips?
Decide booking, per diem and mileage policy before candidates ask. Factory visits and delivery days create many small expenses, and unclear rules irritate people quickly.
What tells me this person enjoys delivery-day pressure?
Ask what they checked the week before a unit arrived and how they dealt with a missed crane slot. Calm, specific answers suggest they have lived it. Impatience with vendors is a warning sign.
Do edge programs change anything about how we agree terms?
Many small sites do not alter how we agree terms, which are set out before the search. Ask for the written agreement whenever your team wants to review it.
