Project Engineer, Data Center for General contractors (mission critical divisions)
Data Center Headhunters recruits critical facilities, data center operations, construction and delivery, commissioning, power and cooling, and executive talent for colocation, hyperscale and enterprise sites. We research the market, contact working people and qualify a shortlist for your opening. No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.
Inside a general contractor's mission critical division, the project engineer is the person who keeps paper moving between a self-performing field team, a stack of subcontractors and an owner's representative who reads every line. You are hiring for document control under pressure more than for technical brilliance, and the interview should reflect that.
This is what we do all day: recruit data center professionals.
No postings. No stacks of resumes. No chasing. You interview a short list.

What does this hire really come down to?
Decide first whether this seat owns the submittal and RFI logs outright or assists a project manager who does. A project engineer in a contractor division usually drafts and routes; the project manager signs commitments. Candidates who describe approving change orders have either stretched their title or worked on a very small job.
Ask what they did when a subcontractor's shop drawings conflicted with the engineer of record. The useful answer names who was called, what was written down, and which party carried the schedule risk while it was resolved.
Separate coordination from clerical work. Running the weekly three-week lookahead with the superintendent, chasing long-lead gear status, and reconciling pay applications against schedule of values lines is coordination. Filing and distribution alone is an assistant role.
What do we check before you see anyone?
Have them walk through one submittal from receipt to release for a piece of electrical or mechanical equipment, including who reviewed it, what was rejected, and how the field was told. Ask how they tracked owner-furnished equipment against contractor-installed work, and where the handoff liability sat when a delivery arrived damaged.

- Probe for exposure to live adjacent space. A candidate who has processed method of procedure reviews and client change windows understands that paperwork can stop a day of work.
Where do we find these candidates?
Strong sources are project engineers from commercial general contractors who moved into critical environments, and engineers from specialty mechanical or electrical contractors who want a broader view of the whole job. Graduates of construction management programs who spent early years on healthcare, lab or semiconductor builds carry the right habits for strict documentation and tight inspection regimes.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?
Do not hire on technical knowledge of switchgear while ignoring whether the person can write a clear RFI. Vague questions produce vague answers and lost days. Do not expect a first-time project engineer to run the owner meeting. That responsibility belongs one level up with the project manager.

- Treating a safety course certificate as supervisory authority. Completion of an OSHA Outreach course shows hazard awareness, not the right to direct a crew.
Your search in 3 steps
- Define the seat
Write down which logs, meetings and approvals this person owns and which stay with the project manager. Share that with candidates before the first call.
- Screen on documents and test with a scenario
Ask for a description of their log discipline, naming conventions and how they escalated an overdue response. Give a conflicting drawing and a looming delivery date and ask what they would send, to whom, and in what order.
- Check the field relationship
Have the superintendent join one conversation to judge whether this person is trusted on the slab.
What differs from a general commercial contractor
A commercial building tolerates a loose submittal. A data center does not, because switchgear, generators and cooling plant often arrive on fixed manufacturing slots, and a missed review pushes the whole energization sequence.
The division model also matters. Some contractors keep a dedicated mission critical group with its own estimators and field leaders; others borrow staff from general building teams. A project engineer from the first model brings habits your team already needs.

Questions
How soon could a contractor-side project engineer shortlist be ready?
It depends on how tightly you define log ownership and whether your division wants prior switchgear or generator submittal handling. A clear remit lets us qualify people faster. We will say early if the pool looks thin.
What if my project engineer resigns and the project manager offers a title bump?
A bump rarely fixes the usual causes, such as an overloaded RFI queue or no path to project manager. We ask the candidate what they would need, so you know whether the decision will hold. A vague reason for leaving deserves a second conversation.
Should I fund a move for a contractor project engineer?
Some will relocate for a long award, others want a home base between jobs. Tell us whether the seat follows work across the country or sits in one regional office, and we will approach different people.
How do I set lodging and per diem for a trailer-based project engineer?
Most work from the site trailer for the whole job with the occasional office day. Write down the lodging, mileage and per diem arrangement before outreach so candidates compare the same terms.
How do I tell whether this person will survive my superintendent?
Ask how they handled a superintendent who ignored the lookahead log. Their answer shows how much friction they tolerate and how they escalate. Then let that superintendent join the final conversation.
Are fees different when the hire is a junior-to-mid seat like this?
Terms for this level are covered in the same agreement you would see for any search. Ask us for the written version alongside your brief so finance can review it.
