What does this hire really come down to?
A journeyman works under a master or contractor license and takes direction from a foreman. They do not design the system or sign for work they do not supervise. What you are buying is clean workmanship, torque discipline, labeling accuracy and the habit of stopping when something does not match the drawing.
Data center work has traits many electricians have not seen: large-gauge conductors, busway, rack power distribution and strict labeling for later operators. Experience in commercial tenant work or residential service is useful, but it does not equal that.
What do we check before you see anyone?
Ask for the largest conductor they have terminated and how they verified torque. Have them describe the tool and the record they kept. Ask how they label circuits and what happened when a label was wrong. Operators rely on those labels years later.

- Ask whether they have worked near energized equipment, and what authorization the employer required. A training certificate alone does not establish task-specific qualification; the employer decides who is qualified for which tasks.
Where do we find these candidates?
Industrial electricians, commercial journeymen from larger contractors and tradespeople from healthcare or manufacturing environments commonly cross over well. Apprenticeship program graduates are a source for newer journeymen. Check how much of their hours came from large power work versus lighting and receptacles.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?
Do not treat an OSHA ten-hour card as a license or qualification. It is a course completion card. Do not assume a license in one state transfers to another. Check the authority having jurisdiction. Do not hire for speed alone on a scope where inspectors and commissioning teams will review every termination.

Your search in 3 steps
- Pin the scope
We ask whether the work is rough-in, gear, rack power or testing, and what the foreman expects.
- Check license and trade
We confirm journeyman status and jurisdiction before sharing anyone, then test conductor sizing, termination method, labeling and safety habits.
- Release the names
You receive candidates with notes on large-power experience and availability.
Who sits above and below the journeyman
An apprentice learns under supervision and does not carry the license. A foreman plans and directs the work. The journeyman sits between, trusted to do the work correctly with limited oversight.
If you need someone who also leads a small team on the day, ask for a lead journeyman and say what extra authority you will grant.
What to confirm on the day
Check that the person can read a one-line diagram, not only follow a pull sheet. Ask what they do when a breaker label and the drawing disagree. Listen for a clear refusal to guess, followed by a call to the foreman and a written note.
Ask also about their tools: torque wrenches, cable cutters sized for large conductors and megohmmeters. A journeyman who owns and calibrates the right tools usually carries the habits that go with them.
Working near live equipment
Ask what escort or permit system the candidate has used and who authorized them. Authorization comes from the employer for each task, so ask for a description of the briefing they received before a specific job.
Candidates who have worked in an active hall can explain how they protected adjacent racks while pulling cable.

Questions
What timing should we expect for a journeyman shortlist?
Availability is the main variable, since good journeymen often work until the day they leave. We can explain what to expect once we know your start window and licensing needs.
Do journeymen get counteroffers?
Sometimes, particularly when the current contractor is mid-project and short of hands. We ask what would make them stay so you learn the real motive before you extend an offer.
Should we offer relocation to a journeyman?
Most will take lodging and travel pay before they agree to move a household. Decide whether the job is for locals only or open to travelers before interviews start.
Do journeymen on a large campus work away from home?
On large campuses it often is, with per diem and a rotation home. Put the daily rate, the schedule and the payment method in writing early so candidates can compare accurately.
How do we judge whether a journeyman fits our crew?
Have your foreman run a short field conversation about a real installation. Matching work style and care about labels tells you more than a long résumé.
What do we owe if a journeyman we meet through you joins the crew?
The fee is due only if you hire a candidate we introduce. The terms sit in the agreement we sign before any search begins.
