Data Center Operations Manager for Colocation and multi-tenant operators (retail and interconnection)

Data Center Headhunters recruits critical facilities, data center operations, construction and delivery, commissioning, power and cooling, and executive talent for colocation, hyperscale and enterprise sites. We research the market, contact working people and qualify a shortlist for your opening. No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

A colocation operations manager runs the daily floor for customers who each think their rack is the only one that matters. You are hiring for scheduling discipline, customer access control and calm communication more than for plant theory.

This is what we do all day: recruit data center professionals.

No postings. No stacks of resumes. No chasing. You interview a short list.

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

What does this hire really come down to?

Decision authority usually covers shift rosters, access approvals, work order scheduling and escalation to engineering. The manager approves who enters which suite and when, but does not typically approve changes to shared power or cooling. Ask where the boundary sat in the candidate's last role.

Supervision includes technicians, security staff, shipping and receiving, and sometimes remote hands teams. Permitted work for customer staff is limited, and the manager enforces it. A good candidate can describe a time they refused a request from an important customer.

Compared with the critical facilities manager, this person owns the customer-facing rhythm of the floor, while the facilities manager owns plant condition. Compared with a shift lead, the operations manager owns staffing and process design. Probe which of those the person truly handled.

What do we check before you see anyone?

  • Ask how they manage a surge of installs and decommissions at the same time, and how they keep the floor safe and labelled.
  • Probe on interconnection work: cross connect ordering, carrier access and the paperwork behind them.
  • Test incident handling: what they tell customers, how soon, and how they record it.

Where do we find these candidates?

Look at other colocation operators, managed hosting providers and enterprise data centers that hosted outside tenants. Telecom central office managers sometimes bring valuable discipline. Technical shift leads promoted from within a multi-tenant site can be strong, but test their appetite for budget and staffing work.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

  • Hiring someone who only managed an enterprise floor with no external customers.
  • Overvaluing technical skill while under-testing communication.
  • Skipping a conversation about after hours coverage and on call expectations.

Your search in 3 steps

  1. Map customer types

Explain whether you serve large cage customers, small racks or carriers.

  2. Clarify the access rules

Write down who approves entry and work, so candidates can compare.

  3. Role-play a difficult request and speak with a peer

Present a customer who demands urgent access outside approved hours. Have the candidate meet your engineering lead to test working chemistry.

Floor discipline

Walk the candidate through a day. Deliveries arrive, a customer wants escorted entry, a carrier technician is late, and a tile removal is scheduled in an aisle with live racks. Listen for sequencing and for who they call.

Ask what tags, labels or tickets they require before touching any customer equipment. Remote hands work causes many outages, and the answer reveals how strict they are.

Where the role ends

The operations manager does not design the power chain or sign off its modification. If the person claims to have done that, find out whether they stretched their remit or the employer lacked an engineer.

Equally, a manager who cannot read a one-line diagram will struggle to challenge a vendor. Ask them to explain how one rack gets its power.

Metrics they should know

Ask which floor measures they watched weekly, such as ticket ageing, access exceptions or unlabelled cabling found in audits. Listen for what they did after a bad week, not just the measure.

Also ask how they trained new remote hands staff. Training is where floor discipline starts.

Questions

When might we receive candidates for a colocation operations manager?

It turns on how many people in your market have owned escorted access and customer tickets, not just run a floor. We will say plainly where the pool is thin.

Do customer relationships make counteroffers more likely?

Yes, since a manager who holds large tenants' trust is hard to replace. We ask candidates early what would make them stay, and flag anyone whose employer depends on them heavily.

Does an operations manager need to relocate for a colocation site?

Often yes, but the move is easier if you can offer a flexible start. Tell us about help with housing or a temporary arrangement.

Is there regular travel in this seat?

Usually only for portfolio meetings and audits. If you also need cover at another building, say how often and how it is paid.

How do we judge fit with our customer mix?

Explain who your loudest customers are and what they ask for. Then have candidates answer a request for out of hours access, and watch whether they stay courteous while holding the rule.

How does the fee conversation work for this role?

We cover the engagement terms with you in writing before candidates are introduced. If your finance team needs a specific question answered, send it ahead.

How a search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

Every search runs the same six steps. We agree the brief with you, map where the people work, find direct contact routes, reach out personally and repeatedly, then qualify each candidate live. You only see a short list of people who fit, with notes on each, and we stay with you through offer and start.

  1. 01

    Search Calibration

You get: A written brief you sign off on: scope, must-haves, pay band and who not to approach.

  2. 02

    Market Mapping

You get: A map of the companies and projects where your future hire is working today.

  3. 03

    Professional Contact Intelligence

You get: Verified direct contact routes to the people on that map, not job board replies.

  4. 04

    Persistent Personalized Outreach

You get: Repeated, role-specific outreach to people who are not looking, in your words.

  5. 05

    Live Candidate Qualification

You get: Each candidate is screened live against your brief before you hear their name.

  6. 06

    Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

You get: A short list with candidate briefs, then support through interviews, offer and start.

What should you know before you send a role?

How long until I see a short list?

It depends on the role, the location and the market. We agree a realistic timeline with you during Search Calibration and keep you updated as the search runs.

Is there a guarantee?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

What don't you do?

We do not post your job on boards, send stacks of unscreened resumes or charge an upfront fee. We do not approach candidates for your search before the brief is agreed with you.
