- Assistant Chief Engineer, Data Center
What does this hire really come down to?
The assistant chief engineer covers shifts, supervises vendors and stands in when the chief is out. The chief owns the budget, the staffing plan and the owner relationship. The assistant owns the daily operation. Be clear which of those the person will hold alone and which stay with the chief.
Vendor oversight is a large part of the job. They review work by outside contractors, check that a scope was completed and refuse to sign off when it was not. Ask for a time they rejected a vendor's work and what followed. A deputy who has never done so may not yet have the nerve.
Shift cover tests a different skill. The assistant fills gaps on the roster, which means being credible with technicians at any level. They also keep the succession plan honest. If you intend this person to become chief, say so, because that changes who you should interview.
What do we check before you see anyone?
Ask when they last ran the site while the chief was out and what decisions they made. Real answers include a surprise that arose. Ask them to describe a contractor job they reviewed, the checklist they used and the point at which they said no.
- Coverage experience: ask when they last ran the site while the chief was out and what decisions they made. Real answers include a surprise that arose.
- Vendor scope: ask them to describe a contractor job they reviewed, the checklist they used and the point at which they said no.
- Staff relationships: ask which technicians they have trained and how those people describe working for them. References should reach both peers and subordinates.
Where do we find these candidates?
Assistant chief engineers usually come from senior shift or lead engineering roles on large campuses, sometimes from hospitals and industrial plants with big central utilities. A few step across from construction, after commissioning a campus and staying to run it.

- Consider senior critical facilities engineers who want management duties. Their procedure skills are strong, but ask carefully about experience directing people and money.
Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?
Do not confuse the deputy with the chief. If the role carries no budget authority, say so openly. Do not select the best technician. Deputies need credibility with vendors and managers as well. Do not skip succession talk. Candidates who expect promotion will leave when it does not come.

Your search in 3 steps
- Draw the line with the chief
We agree on what the assistant decides alone and where the chief decides.
- Probe cover and vendor judgment
Candidates describe when they ran a site, and we ask for examples of rejected work and how they handled the discussion.
- Discuss succession
You learn which candidates see a path to chief and which want to stay as deputy.
Questions that separate a deputy from a lead
Ask the candidate to describe how they would run the first week if the chief were suddenly unavailable. Good answers start with the open work orders, the vendors on site and the people who need a decision, rather than with the organization chart.
Ask how they would tell the chief about a bad decision they made while covering. A deputy who cannot describe an error plainly will hide the next one.
Finally, ask which technician on their last team they would promote and why. It tests their judgment of people, which a deputy uses daily.
When the campus is large
On a multi-building campus the deputy may be assigned a hall or a utility yard and act as the chief there. Ask whether the candidate has divided responsibility across buildings before, and how they kept standards the same in each. The answer shows whether they can lead beyond the people they see every day.
Also ask how they hand the building back. A good deputy leaves the chief a short written account of what changed, which vendors were admitted and what remains open.

Questions
What do I need to give you for an assistant chief shortlist?
Send the campus size, the shift structure, the vendor list by trade and what the chief wants delegated. We then screen for people who have held that delegated authority.
What if my assistant chief candidate has a counteroffer?
This level is often held by a promise of a chief seat. We ask what the current employer has promised and whether it is in writing.
Will an assistant chief move to a larger campus for a path to chief?
Usually, for a larger campus or a path to chief. Family and housing questions come first, so we raise them early.
Does a deputy need to visit vendors or other campuses regularly?
Mostly one campus. If you have several, tell us how often the person visits.
How do I test fit with my chief engineer?
Have the chief interview first and ask how decisions get made when they disagree. The pairing matters more than the résumé.
How are fees handled for a deputy seat?
The agreement we send before work starts spells out the terms. We can walk you through them.
